Well curiosity got the best of me and I ended up seeing it yesterday.

And let's just say I much prefer Aline.

The synopsis for this was silly, but it's a romcom, and I had faith that Jim Strouse could do something worthwhile with it; his other films have been solid. The trailer was a cheese-fest so I had armed myself to prepare for that. But still, it was just too much. The entire thing felt like a forced Celine product placement.
It had some fine moments and some genuinely fun lines, but at other times it left me wondering how much of this was Jim's original script versus re-writes by some Sony committee. Parts of the script were just so clunky and forced.
Priyanka was a good fit, and played Mira as warm, vulnerable and real. Sam I've never seen in anything before but it's pretty clear he was there for the hunk factor, not his acting - I guess he appeals for the same demographic of women that Sony thinks overlaps with Celine fandom. Russell Tovey was the highlight for me, and Sofia Barclay, too. The Celine scenes largely made me cringe, sorry to say. Not just the delivery, but the script.
I was OK with the overall contrived premise - the reassigned number and the light-stalking vibe, as I didn't find that too far fetched (from some personal experience...) but they really lost me at the sudden "Celine's a fan of Mira's caterpillar books and won't Mira please design her tour poster" turn. Giant eye roll at that.
And overall, the scenes that were intended to be touching just.. weren't. I'd say there were about 10 people in the theatre, and we all laughed... though not at the intended moments, sadly. I overheard a "I thought Celine DIon was dead" comment..
Perhaps this mess could have been somewhat saved with a better leading man and some changes to the script. Having seen the German original, the Hollywood version felt stilted and forced by comparison. It's a good premise for a romcom, but the execution was just so lacking.

I appreciated the Orpheus and Eurydice references, which felt like a crazy coincidence because I had just seen Hadestown on Wed (which is why I could only stop by the LA premiere for 5min). (And Hadestown happens to be the Orpheus and Eurydice story.)

I'll just go and watch Des fleurs sur la neige now, to cleanse my palette!

But anyway, it was cool to see my apartment building in the trailer and my neighborhood in one of the scenes. (In fact, saw it in a theatre in that neighborhood, about a block from where the scene was shot, and about a 5min walk from the hotel where Celine stayed in March'20 when she did her Barclays concerts & hotel fashion shows.)

Yeah maybe if Céline was in a full 12 min shot, instead of many scenes throughout the film, it wouldn't have gained such a bad review. I guess critics don't really like the recurring Celine scenes and songs. That's why they call it a movie for Celiniacs

P.S. Glad to report she doesn't actually say this in the movie. If she did, that would certainly raise some eyebrows.

If there is one takeaway from this film, it is that Dion needs to be in movies more often.

Too bad they didn’t cast Russel Tovey as the lead!! I think he would’ve been great as Rob.

Poor Celine. I think Netfllix or Apple TV would have been a better platform for a Rom-Com movie.

Is this local or international? For sure local since it hasn’t been released yet in other countries.

Different dates in different countries. Some are being released in July

Who cares, “the titanic is gonna sink again” … SONY knew the risk, Rom coms aren’t big anymore, Netflix, Hulu, Amazon should’ve been where this movie went. Let’s just enjoy this for what it is…. I bet it has success on streaming services later on.

I do not see how the film is a flop. It has all potential to beat its budget. If it makes anywhere close to $20m globally it should be considered success. Other than that, I am happy with how things are going... Critics panned the film and the audiences liked it which is a very familiar narrative with Celine's best selling projects. 😉

I wonder if it will do better in the U.K. as many of the actors are English and with U.K. humour. I wonder if that’s why USA don’t get some of the jokes?

Coming from the U.K. the humour is less obvious sometimes. I don’t know until I see it later in the week.
