I mean...I often have to tell my family to keep their mouths shut. This would have been one of those times.

Would you have told Rene to keep his mouth shut that time he sang PQTME for Celine?
Because I don't think she would have.

Remember this show is conceived for the guest.
They just happen to capture and air it for the rest of us.

Of course!
(Although... that was a joke? B) )

My point is simply that this was appropriate for the occasion.

Basically.

She sounds glorious, slay a bit queen.

Sarcasm doesn’t travel well through text.

I still think he ruined the moment. That part is not a joke.

"That guy" is Yannick's life partner of 23 years, Pierre Tourville.
They met when studying together at Montréal Consérvatoire as teenagers and have been together ever since. He's a violinist and also directs Montreal's Chœur Métropolitain, where Yannick's mum sings.
As you'll undoubtedly remember from the Celine episode, En direct de l'univers is a bit of a family love-in. That's what this was about.

Wait... do you mean they're gay? :o

Like GAY??? :o :o :o

Yannick Nézet-Séguin is the newly-appointed Musical Director of the Met - one of the world's most prestigious opera houses, the Met's first new MD in ~40 years, and only the 3rd MD in the Met's 130+ year history.
He also conducts the Philadelphia Orchestra and Montreal's Orchestre Métropolitain, and has previously also conducted Rotterdam Philharmonic, London Philharmonic, Royal Opera House, among others.
He's one of the most in-demand conductors in the world.

He has been a conducting prodigy all his life - started in grade school, and was conducting major ensembles around Montreal as of his late teens /early twenties.
People love him because not only is he great at what he does, but is "young and hip" and a breath of fresh air into what is often considered a stodgy art form. (When not conducting, he's into hop-hop, works out like an athlete and posts about it obsessively (check out his IG!), sports tattoos, has a cat named Rafa after his tennis hero Rafael Nadal, etc.) He has been with his partner, violinist Pierre Tourville (who you see singing with Celine in that vid) for 23 years.

There's a nice profile of him here: https://www.metopera...les/open-score/
And also several nice profile links in my other posts about him in the past: here (incl. an excerpt of his Met debut - Carmen) and here and here (see these posts and his FB for pics of when he met Celine at her 2016 show in Montreal; he seems to be good friends with a lot of her musicians, not surprisingly).
He has said several times he'd love to work with Celine and bring her to the Met in some capacity (see here)

Watch him conducting as a 10-yr old in this vid (~2:40 min) :)

Séguin has been a great conductor for the Philadephia orchestra  His input has made classical music more relevant for people who wouldn't normally see a concert

Ok...I just not a good idea to listen the Olympia version and then this one...I know it  was  lower key she was sitting down, she was not going to belt the last part just for this show...she still sounds like an angel, but I wonder if the reason she says bye to Vegas is becuase her voice can't keep up with the rythem (don't get me wrong she left heart and soul in her last tour and her voice was amazing....but I think Vegas is sucking the life out of her) I would rather have a small tour once a year and see her in top condition rather than seeing her in Vegas doing the MOST boring setlist ever...boy I miss the AND setlist and show....if the show was with another artist it would be a snooze fest, trust me, I went to see her, I LOVED it because of her....but I wanted more (and not more Celine, but more visual experiences, more exciment) I was like, OK and NOW it comes the big bang! and nothing...so I guess it is the right move.

Hopefully her voice is resting so we can see again the Celine that has fun on stage.

Of course Céline have been performing at Caesars Palace since 2003. She’ll get bored with the same venue, same setlists. She will have more great time doing world tour because she can go to different places/countries.

Disclaimer: no Celine content. Just a Celine fan doing amazingly impressive things with his life.

Yannick (aka Mighty Mouse :) ) makes his debut as Musical Director of the Met tomorrow, with La Traviata (he made his actual Met debut as conductor back in 2010, when he was all of 35! But this time he's the boss.)
It's a big deal - he's only the 3rd MD in the Met's 135-year history, so there's lots of press about him at the moment. Some great profiles in print, and more to come.
Here are two great interviews. I'm really enjoying hearing him talk about music.
New York Public Radio (~5min listen)
NYC Arts (~15min)

I don't do opera very often - maybe once or twice a season - but I went to see this new YNS production of La Traviata last night and man, the critics are right - it was excellent!
Also, nice to see Yannick is getting so much love from everyone. (If you're interested but can't make it to NYC, the Dec 15th show is getting live broadcast to cinemas across 70 countries, so you can always watch it in HD.)

Hope he really does convince Celine to do something together one day, would be great for her, I think.

And also, this should be no news but man, opera singers really are beasts. To sing for 3 hours, unamplified, to such a huge house, over an 80-piece orchestra, from memory, in a foreign language, while acting... it really is something.

(And on a somewhat related note, thought this was a very interesting article.)

There's a great article in today's New York Times about Yannick & Pierre, to coincide with the opening with Pelléas et Mélisande at the Met.

It includes this:

"The Met Opera Has a Gay Conductor. Yes, That Matters
Openly gay performing arts leaders are still rare. So it was a breath of fresh air to chat about coming out and Celine Dion with Yannick Nézet-Séguin and his partner.

[...]
A wholly different kind of aural spectrum — and a spectacle that was queer even by opera standards — was on display in October, when Mr. Nézet-Séguin was featured on the Canadian national television show “En Direct de l’Univers,” a kind of “This Is Your Life” told through the people and music you love. His nieces and nephews were on, as were his parents and trainer. Rufus Wainwright sang a few songs.

But the climax was a duet: the Jacques Brel number “Quand On N’a Que L’Amour” (“When Love Is All You Have”), with Mr. Tourville joined remotely by none other than Celine Dion. Mr. Nézet-Séguin cried — mostly, he said, “because I was watching Pierre sing a duet with his idol.”

The couple is not married, but for a gay union, there could hardly have been a more sacred ceremony. “It made an impact,” Mr. Nézet-Séguin said. “We did not realize that, and yet it made an impact. Hey, two guys sang their love, with Celine blessing it.”"

Is it a sign that now that the Met has a Canadian Céline fan as Musical Director that there is hope that she will be involved in classical events ? :-D ^_^

Haha, I wish! Think that's a bit of a stretch at this point - it's not really a song you would know about unless you were a pretty serious Celine fan, IMHO.
That being said, this clip doubled its view count today after being embedded in the NYT story.

A bunch of classical music journalists were tweeting about it today (selection below).

I do love how Yannick seems to be bringing classical music to a wider public. He's doing a show later this month with Helen Mirren!

Perhaps it's elsewhere in this topic so forgive me if this has already been asked/replied to, but can one hear a video of her performing this song? It is one of my favorite songs, though I refer to the Live A Paris version on ONCP disc 2 when I want to hear this song! A L'Olympia is amazing also, though.

So I went to see Yannick conduct Pelléas et Mélisande this week, and look who else was there! And he sat in the pit!

By the way, sounds like Bradley may have been doing some research for his next film.
I knew he spoke French, but not as well as this! Maybe he can give us a proper Celine biopic! (He does mention her in this interview...)

And separately, there was also an interesting Slate opinion piece this week in response to the NYT article above. Celine only mentioned in passing, but interesting debate in this thread.
