OMG. Shocking, but not surprised.

Well, yes and no...

Shocking, definately, I was still awake saturday night (I think it was about 02h00 when I read it) when the first tweets came in annoucing her dead and it was definately shocking to read it...

Not surprised...  Yes and no, No maybe because she had a hard time and the fact that alcohol and narcotics (even prescription ones) can kill...  But honestly, I was more surprised about Whitney's dead then I was with Amy Winehouse's dead...

Anyway...  To bad she's gone, she had one of the most beautiful voices in the world and she did make marvelous music...  Allthough that she didn't make much music anymore and allthough her last worldtour sounded like crap I think I can say without doubt that the music industry lost a huge icon...

May she rest in peace... :(

2012 seems to be a bad year, first Etta James and now Whitney...

I just saw such a spectacular performance of Whitney, although at that time her voice was already a bit damaged and rawer than before..
it is still amazing....

Whitneys smash hit cover of Dolly Partons I Will Always Love You - which spent 10 weeks at Number 1 upon its release 20 years ago this year, and went on to become the biggest selling single of 1992 - leads the way in todays reports, entering at Number 10. 1987s I Wanna Dance With Somebody is next in line at Number 13, with One Moment In Time (25), My Love Is Your Love (28), I Have Nothing (30), Saving All My Love For You (37), and How Will I Know (38) completing the Top 40.

Whitneys The Greatest Hits (6), leads the way in terms of the singers re-entries on the Official Albums Chart, according to todays initial sales flash. The Essential Whitney Houston (59) and 1998s My Love Is Your Love (107) follow in the Official Albums Chart Top 200.

The Official Charts Company managing director, Martin Talbot, comments, The tragic death of Whitney Houston came as a shock to her friends, colleagues and music fans across the world. even though celine is my number one and every one knows it, i admit that at her peak whitney was vocally unmatched. no one could match her, not celine, not barbra, not aretha, not mariah, not ella, no one. her tone, range, clarity, ease of transition from register to register was pure magic. God it still feels so weird that she is physically no longer with us...

I agree, Whitney is in my Top 4 with Celine at #1.  I've been a Whitney fan since the beginning and have stayed loyal - it's beena tough road of ups and downs for us.

At her peak, her voice was incredible on mainly 2 songs..."I Will Always Love You" and "I'm Every Woman" - some of those note were so unbelieveable - just amazing!  I think her most emotional work was The Preachers Wife soundtrack, it's a shame she didn't win a Grammy for that.  I always said she should do a full gospel album.  I'm sure the record label wouldn't have liked that because it wouldn't have sold as much as a pop album.  The best artists do whats in their heart though, I wish Celine would do a jazz album.  She'd sound awesome.

I was never a fan or anything but I think Whitney had an amazing voice when she was younger. I couldn't believe it when I heard the news on Sunday morning. Whitney was way too young to die! It's terrible many talented people let drugs and alcohol ruin their lives...

I only found out tonight that Annie Lennox is the original writer and singer of Whitney's Step By Step! She also provides backing vocals for Whitney's version!

Here's Annie's version....

Yeah, like Celine and Mariah (and Annie herself) they all have many covers! And nine times out of ten, they do it far better. But I will always maintain that Celine's version of I Drove All Night pales in comparison to Cyndi's! As does Roy Orbison's. Cyndi's is superb! :)

Speaking as a HUGE Cyndi fan I love Cyndi's version but it's totally different than Celine's.  Really it's almost like 2 different songs - the lyrics and most of the melody are the same but one is more rock and the other dance.  I love them both.  Cyndi is an exceptional singer, huge voice.  The great thing about her is she makes the music SHE wants, she has such a varried body of work.  I would have loved to see that from Whitney and WANT it so bad for Celine.

PS - Whitney is an Arista artist, not Sony.  I'm sure ole Clive will release something, there's gotta be TONS of unreleased songs out there.

Whitney Houston death: Family 'shocked' by Clive Davis party

Whitney Houston's family were reportedly 'stunned" that Clive Davis went ahead with a pre-Grammy Awards party mere hours after her death this weekend.

The 'I Will Always Love You' singer, who was meant to have performed at the event, passed away in her room at the Beverly Hilton hotel on Saturday (February 11) while Davis's annual party was being prepared elsewhere in the building.

However, it has since been claimed that Houston's family, who gathered at Davis's room in the hotel after the discovery of her death, had "no idea" that the record producer intended to continue with the party.

"The mood in Davis's suite was just of pure shock," The Sun quotes a US source as saying. "Bobbi Kristina was absolutely inconsolable. She was rocking back and forth on the couch, crying hysterically. Police swarmed her room and did an investigation that took hours. Houston’s daughter Bobbi Kristina even got into a shouting match with police because she couldn’t see her mother’s body". But that didn’t stop Houston’s mentor from canceling his party that took place in the same hotel. “Clive was already dressed in his tux and most of Whitney's family was already dressed for the party. There wasn't any mention of the party proceeding or being canceled by Clive. He told Whitney's family that they could stay in his suite as long as they needed to, and then after about 45 minutes with them, he left. He said he had to go downstairs and take care of the guests, but the family had no idea that the party was going to proceed. Whitney's aunt, Mary Jones, was absolutely stunned that the party was going ahead, and she was very upset that it hadn't been canceled.”

Celebrities like Kelly Rowland, Alicia Keys, Brandi Norwood, Monica, Diddy, Cassie, Kim Kardashian and more attended the event.

Partygoers enjoyed a concert and partied the night away while Houston’s body laid upstairs in the same building. Her daughter was hysterical and was eventually carted off to a hospital for stress and anxiety. Houston’s family, who gathered in Davis’s room following the singer’s death, had no idea that he was going to go ahead with the party.

Blazer said she had just returned from a trip downtown on Saturday afternoon when she saw an ambulance parked outside the main entrance of the Wilshire Boulevard hotel. She said another hotel guest told her that Houston's room was apparently on the fourth floor because part of the floor was cordoned off by emergency personnel.

Julia O'Reilly, another hotel guest who was in the lobby area directly across the entrance to the International Ballroom, where music could be heard coming from inside as guests trickled into the party, said she had just returned to the hotel an hour earlier and heard the news.

"I hope she didn't do anything crazy," she said of Houston. "Nobody here is showing any feelings or sadness. But the best actors and singers always say the show must go on."

At the party, Davis said: "I don't have to mask my emotions. I do have a very heavy heart. I am personally devastated. She was so looking forward to tonight. My heart goes out to her daughter, Bobbi Kristina, and her mother, Cissy. Whitney was a beautiful person and she had a talent beyond compare. She graced this stage with her regal talent so many times. So, simply put, Whitney would have wanted the music to go on."

However, those words don't resonate with Houston's family. "Even IF Whitney had given her blessing for the party to continue, even that doesn't make it ok. Her body was lying in a room upstairs, dead, for heaven's sake. It was simply in bad taste, period,” the source says. “The family just feels like it was very insensitive for the party to continue. Yes, guests were on the way to the hotel at the time when they learned the news, but they could have had a prayer in the ballroom, and then Clive could have, and should have, sent everyone home. The food could have been donated to a local homeless shelter.”

Hotel management and security asked the Los Angeles County Coroner to not remove Houston's body until after the party was over. "Out of respect for Whitney Houston, the higher ups at the Beverly Hilton asked the Coroner to delay removing her body until after the party was over and winding down. It would be insensitive for the van to be driven out with her body as limos were pulling away with the A-list guests. There were also security concerns and all efforts were made so that the media or someone else wouldn’t get a picture of Whitney's body (which was covered) being loaded into the van," an insider says.

Diane Warren shocked, disconcerted after Whitney Houston's death

Songwriter Diane Warren, who worked on seven songs with Whitney Houston, expressed a deep sense of sadness at the Grammy Awards on Sunday over the loss of the pop icon, as well as shock and a bit of discomfort about the way Houston's death was being handled less than 24 hours after the fact.

"I think people are all feeling really weird," Warren said. "Even at Clive [Davis]'s party last night, Alicia Keys was really good, but sorry, I didn't want to see Pit Bull jumping around the stage."

It was reported by several sources that Pit Bull used explicit language to encourage guests to "party" since Houston herself "loved to party."

Warren also was a bit disconcerted, she said, by Tony Bennett's remarks during his performance about how drugs should be legalized in the wake of deaths including Michael Jackson, Amy Winehouse and now Whitney Houston.

"No, sorry. She got legal drugs from her doctor this time," Warren said sadly. "So that was inappropriate."

Chaka Khan slams Clive Davis party in wake of Whitney Houston's death

Chaka Khan agrees with Houston’s Family. She sat down with Piers Morgan and gave him a mouth full.

“I thought that was complete insanity,” Khan said “Knowing Whitney, I don’t believe she would have said, ‘The show must go on.’ She’s the kind of woman who would have said, ‘Stop everything! Uhn uhn. I’m not gonna be there.’ I don’t know what could motivate a person to have a party in a building where the person whose life he had influenced so enormously–and whose life had been affected by hers, [passed]. I don’t understand how that party went on.”

Khan added, “It would have been right if it was a true tribute. A truer, more honest tribute, in my opinion, would have been to call everybody together, let’s say a prayer, eat dinner and go home. I couldn’t get dressed. I was supposed to go to the party. I had just gotten off a plane from Miami at about 5:30. As soon as I hit the tamarack, I found out. I heard, and I couldn’t put on make-up. I couldn’t get dressed. I was paralyzed.”

I don't know about u people... but i am appalled by Clive Davis!!!!! He makes me sick to my stomach. Obviously he didnt care one bit that someone that made him alot of money was laying dead in the same hotel he was throwing his party. I just seriously side eye Clive Davis for this. All these years he came off as Houston's biggest support but for him to go on with the party with her dead body four floors up Just seems shady. Business is business hey Clive. Remember ur old, not much time left 4 u.
Clive wouldn't let the coroner take Whitney's body until his event ended, OMG she was upstairs decomposing while they partied for hours!  :o  How grotesque, not to mention disrespectful! He should be ashamed but doubt he has a conscience.
If the party was at a different hotel, then it would not have been as controversial. Her body was STILL IN THE SAME HOTEL A FEW FLOORS ABOVE while celebrities were posing for red carpet photos and partying.

Whitney: The Overflowing Bathtub from the Night Before

EXCLUSIVE — Whitney Houston’s death made for a long day’s journey into night at the Beverly Hilton. While the Clive Davis Grammy dinner had to proceed downstairs in the ballroom–with 800 guests already filing in as the news was breaking–Whitney remained in state, so to speak, in her fourth floor suite. She was not removed until just moments before the party ended–a little after midnight. She’d been in the suite, discovered in her bathtub. But there were many people in the suite when this happened at 3:50pm including her daughter Bobbi Kristina, her brother Gary, sister in law Pat Houston, and another player in this story — a nightlife friend who’d been guiding her around town the last few days as she was photographed in states of duress.

What you don’t know is that around 11pm, paramedics were called back to the fourth floor. Security and police raced back to the 4th floor. A medical wheelchair with restraints was brought in through the back entrance to the hotel. Bobbi Kristina “freaked out”–well, she’d been upstairs for hours with her mother’s dead body in the next room. It was understandable. The paramedics thought they were going to to have to take her to the hospital. But calm was restored. For ten minutes, though, security cleared the entire lobby of the hotel while the concert was going on inside the ballroom. I was out there at that moment, and it was one of the strangest scenes ever.

Then there’s the mysterious story of a leak that occurred the night before from Whitney’s group of suites. A man on the third floor right underneath Houston’s suite told me this (before TMZ screwed it up completely): he suddenly experienced water cascading into his bathroom from above at 2:30am. It wasn’t just a trickle. The man called security, then went upstairs to the fourth floor to see what was going on. He swears to me that it was Whitney’s bathtub that was overflowing. He also says that a flat screen television had been been broken–the screen was smashed. My sources at the hotel say there was a “leak” but that it wasn’t from Whitney’s room. “They [her group] have a lot of rooms up there,” says the hotel source. My source, this man, insists that he was told it was Whitney Houston’s room. It does seem to have been part of her group of rooms.

There are many mysteries here. None of them have been reported or solved by TMZ or one of the other muckracking tabloids. I know the man who had to pull Whitney out of the bathtub yesterday and attempt to give her CPR. He told me, “She was already dead. There was nothing I could do.”

Whitney Houston: The Vultures Are Out, And Demanding Their Money

Whitney Houston is dead and the money making has begun. The people close to her–just like those “close” to Michael Jackson– are selling their wares to the highest bidders. This accounts for the constant and incorrect stories appearing on TMZ, Radar Online, The National Enquirer, and the syndicated “entertainment” shows. And let’s not forget the networks, which “license” footage–another way of saying “paying for an interview.”

Anyone who knew Whitney or was related to her will try now to make some quick cash and become an “expert” on her leading up to her funeral. Kudos to Cissy Houston and Dionne Warwick for smartly putting the funeral in a small church, with no big public fiesta. The Jacksons, lest we forget, staged a memorial at the Staples Center, then held a big reception. It took them six more weeks to have an actual “funeral” that was televised.

But that doesn’t mean that Whitney doesn’t have her vultures. She supported a lot of people for a long time financially. Now they will panic. The gravy train has come to its last stop. Since Saturday,  the tabloid websites have run conflicting stories, claiming one thing, then claiming the opposite. My favorite lately is TMZ’s assertion that the suite where Whitney died was already being rented out at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. They also claimed to have a picture of the bathtub “minutes” after Whitney died in it. Believe not a word on these websites. All the info is coming from “insiders” for cash.

One insider told me tonight he had 248 messages from media outlets. Another is being stalked by paparazzi. I feel terrible for the people at that New Hope Baptist Church. They’re going to have a lot of trouble on their hands the day of that funeral. After all, “ET”–the grossest of all the TV shows–has already run a picture of “Whitney’s body bag.” You can only imagine what’s next on their agenda.

I'm watching the funeral now and it's so touching and heartbreaking.  Everyone has such nice memories of her, she will be sooo missed by her friends and family, and of course us fans.

That party had been planned for months. When things like that are cancelled there's a lot that goes to waste.  Food would be wasted and servers who count on the money would lose out. There's more work behind the scenes that people don't think about. Life is for the living.  We must pay our respects and move on with our lives.

In the album chart the "Greatest Hits" album enters at #7 and "The Essential Whitney Houston" charts at #40.

I loved Kevin Costner's speech. It was very heart felt.

Obviously she didn't ''fix'' herself.  :ermm:

She may have fought her addiction to illegal drugs (although we can't be 100% sure) but she was still stuck with her addiction to prescribed drugs. Guess her doctors have somewhat something to do with this.

We really don't know how long she was using prescription medication or for what reason.  We do know that when mixed with alcohol it can be deadly - esp Xanex.  I think it'll be ruled as an accidental overdose of prescription meds and alcohol.  I do think people confuse getting off of illegal drugs as being "clean" but many in the US are very addicted to prescription meds and docs are very quick to write scripts for them.  If you're a celeb, you could have 2 or more docs writing scrips not knowing there are other docs out there.

I still find it hard to believe Whitney is gone, i had really hoped she would comeback and give us that voice again, she was such a beautiful singer and at her peak was untouchable, great diction and vocal control. I put her up there with Barbra,Celine and Lara My favourite singers and interpreters of song.
RIP Nippy

Yes, I agree.  She could do things with her voice that were amazing.  David Foster was interviewed about singers he worked with.  He said Celine was a hard worker and would always give him exactly what he asked for BUT with Whitney he'd ask her to do something and she'd always put her own spin on it and it would be better than he ever could've imagined.
