I have to say I love the DVD so I hate to post in this thread but I have made some observations which people might not like so this seems to be the safest place. If anybody is still reading this thread, I'd also like some answers to a few questions.
Firstly, it is immediatley obvious to me when Celine is lipping, not because of her expressions, but because of the robotic, mechanical quality to the note. I love all the new versions of the different songs but compare the deep, rich tone of BYLM to the shrill, mechanical quality of TLYM. Is this just the effects of too much digitalisation or does Celine need more help in the studio? I accept that she might not produce the high notes like she used to and it doesn't bother me one bit... I love her new rawness and edginess... but why do they feel the need to recreate a perfect note for the lipped tracks? It sounds terrible and so clearly engineered. I would much rather hear a faltering note than listen to a robot. Could someone in the know explain why it sounds so mechanical?
Also, like most people, I don't approve of the editing. I love the show and Céline is absolutely stunning and gorgeous throughout. However, poor editing detracts from the energy and sincerity of the live concert. I love the new versions of TPOL etc but like many am annoyed when I see the audience clapping, singing and cheering yet hear nothing. Was the audience dubbed out or the song added later. It seems she is lipping to the new version rather than the old so was the audience just digitally removed? Either way, I don't like it.
Also, I HATE that the footage is taken from Boston AND Montreal. Why? It's bad enough when they film the show over several nights at the same venue but to have them from completely different countries... I might be wrong but wasn't Live a Paris filmed in one night? This is Celine's best concert I think, it is live and she has so much energy and the crowd is buzzing and yet it is all so simple. Celine and her band. Nothing more. But the Taking Chances DVD lacks the vitality... the live shows did not but the DVD does not quite capture the electricity. I don't know from one scene to the next which concert I'm watching and the consistency errors (esp. with regards to dancers appearing and disappearing mid-song) are too distracting. How does the song still look and sound live when they are clearly switching between shows? Obviously the sound is taken from one show but she never looks like she is lipping the live songs... how can this be? She can't have sung the songs exactly the same on two differnet nights...
I guess my main moan is that we can never know what show we are watching or what version of the songs we are listening to.
Now for my questions: in the French DVD do they use the same footage for the English songs? I mean, are the performances of RDMH, ABM, TPOL etc exactly the same as in the English DVD? If so, I'm very disappointed! Why would they do that? Lipped or not, they would look and feel different and I want to see the performances as they happened on the night!
Secondly, is it true that there is no screaming/ad-libbing in Je Sais Pas and other songs? I have to say, hearing this live made me so happy and these little additions gave new life to the song. Where they edited out or did she just no do them on the night?
Thirdly, dos anybody else think that she sings more of TPOL live in the new version. Obviously, the last note and most of the high bits are lipped but other parts sound (and look) live. I'm sure I'm just imagining it but would be nice if it were true. I mean, her jaw moves a lot less. In Vegas, she picked up the awful habit of moving her jaw during long notes to compensate for the fact that she wasn't singing but this is a lot less noticeable here. Do you think she has been told by her people (who have seen discussions on this forum) or is she actualy singing more of her songs live?
Hope someone can answer. I'm going to stop complaining now before I sound ungrateful. We are so lucky to have so much available to us and regardless of flaws, Celine is magnificent throughout. It's just a shame her people don't seem to have enough respect for her to do things just right.
I'm off to listen to TPOL for the 100th time today!
UGH! Second time replying to this. My message was all typed and I pressed the back button.
1. Live a Paris was filmed over two nights. Remember, it has the biggest editing blunder of them all. A cordless mic on one night and a regular mic on the next.
2. Most of the footage is the same, but it is different in the "appropriate" times. In English concerts, she ends IDAN in the center to do TPOL. I think she normally does in French concerts to when she does TPOL, but in this one she ended it by the cat walk or some other random place so she could do J'Irai Ou Tu Iras. Hmm, this makes me wonder if they used footage from 8/15 or 8/16 because I know on one of those nights she did not do TPOL while on both of the DVD filming nights she did. Also, there are minor differences during the Queen Medley where she is talking to the crowd. New Mego's Flamenco was slightly different too I think. The first few seconds of LCMM in Montreal has a nice ad lib where she yells the word "Yeah!" in a high pitched voice. MHWGO is also different. Remember, in English Concerts it is the last song so right before the climax she comes off the center thing that is in the air and runs across the stage. In Montreal, she stays on that for the entire song. Additionally, PQTME and My Love are completely different in not only the vocals, but the video too. A few of the wide range audience shots are the same in My Love, but other than that, it's different.
3. Yes, it's unfortunately true that there is no high ad libs during JSP. It wasn't because it was edited out though, but actually because she did not do those notes on the filmed nights. I believe she only did them on the 15th and/or the 16th. The Alone adlibs however, were performed during 3 of the 4 filmed shows. It's a shame they took the performance form the one show she didn't do an ad lib. Same with the RDMH ad libs. The ones from the DVD were weak compared to the better ones.
4. TPOL from the DVD was just as lipped as it has been since she had been using the pre-recorded track in 1993. Yeah, it may sound and look more live, but don't be fooled...it isn't live! This also goes to slightly disprove your point about it being "obvious"....if a huge fan like yourself can question it possibly being live, than we know that the average fan buying the DVD will certainly NEVER suspect it to be lipped.
Hope I cleared some things up for you...
