Céline has Stiff-Person Syndrome

We know that Celine herself confirmed she started having issues in 2008 but do we think it’s possible they could’ve started at some point during the a new day residency, or that maybe that residency could’ve caused some of her issues due to the crazy schedule? There were a lot of nasal moments throughout it, similar to that of mid 2008.

I wonder the same, due to the crazy schedule but also…that raked stage could’ve caused her long term musculoskeletal issues but whether that could lead to SPS, I guess the jury’s out on that.

I find it confusing though, although I know that math was never her strength 😂, when she keeps on saying it’s been going on 17 years, she said it in the doc which was like late 2021 or 2022 and it’s still 17 years according to the doc promo interviews some 2/3 years later and that it started during 2008’s Taking Chances tour which was only 16 years ago now, so which is it??

Yeah that math doesn’t quite add up. Personally, I think it started at least before the European leg though because wasn’t it at the end of March that Australian shows were canceled or rescheduled and wasn’t she going through some sort of vocal therapy at that time? I find it odd how much her tone changed when she took those two or three weeks off in April, then her tone change a good amount from even the Manchester shows to Birmingham, which was just 7 or 8 days later

I’m willing to think that the 17 years thing is likely the most accurate result of what they calculated/estimated during her process of being diagnosed, which would mean that they managed to trace symptoms back to around 2005. Even now, when she says “17 years” it’s usually in the context of how long it took to get a diagnosis.

Also, Céline herself said (and any simple Google search indicates) that nothing in particular caused her SPS, or at least nothing that is currently identifiable. It could not have been prevented, it was always in her DNA. So no, ‘A New Day…’ will likely not have contributed to causing SPS. If anything, the constant physical effort and training that Céline was doing probably helped mitigate the symptoms, allowing her to continue to function and appear in not just good but extraordinary shape all this time. Similarly, an extreme workout regimen is probably what is keeping her in such an inexplicably impressive shape these days, setting her apart as an anomaly among SPS patients, enabling her to still, with SPS, have better strength, balance and flexibility than most healthy people (as evidenced in that most recent BTS clip where she raises her leg, among other clips of her training).

Another good article found via Dr Piquet’s LinkedIn feed: https://www.fiercebiotech.com/research/wake-celine-dions-diagnosis-and-comeback-stiff-person-syndrome-researchers-and-advocates

“I was so happy for her that she was able to do that [Olympic performance],” Tara Zier, founder and CEO of the Stiff Person Syndrome Research Foundation (SPSRF), told Fierce Biotech in an interview. “Does that mean she's cured? No. Does that mean she's OK? No.”

When I saw the Paris BTS video, I wondered how can she stretch her legs like this with SPS. A good medical team and a lot of training? Is it really normal for SPS?

She’s clearly very flexible and always has been; all the while she’s in training most days she probably won’t lose that flexibility.

Here are the scenes from the Paris BTS video.

She is indeed very flexible.

She has said in the past that she used to not be flexible at all when she was younger. That it was an issue for her. But then when she started doing ballet (at age 50, and more than 10 years into SPS symptoms) she developed the flexibility.

I’m not sure I’m buying that about flexibility being an issue in the past, she’s always been extremely flexible as far back as I can remember, with the likes of lying down with legs underneath her and arms outstretched flat on her back, the arching her back backwards, or the high kicks with perfectly straight legs etc that she’s always done on stage, certainly much more flexible than the average person. Albeit more so with the ballet lessons but she’s most definitely always been flexible.

Remember how she end ABM during TCWT?? She’s always been pretty flexible to do that.

I remember trying that pose. It’s really hard LOL

Indeed a lot of Céline’s poses are surprisingly hard even for people who consider themselves fit. Especially the more recent ones we’ve seen.

When did she start the ballet training? After Rene's death right? Did she have a training for tours in the 90s/00s?

Yes ballet was after Rene's death. She also trained for A New Day intensely. So I agree with others she has always been more flexible than most.

I believe she took dance during her year off in 86/87 but not sure once hit it big in 90s if she had an ongoing regiment.

I believe she said she took up ballet seriously in late 2018? And yes, I don’t think she ever trained other than for ‘A New Day…’.

I remember the early 00’s behind the scenes of A New Day with Oprah’s show. I remember Celine doing this flexible poses with her coach. She didn’t cut her hair yet that time. That’s the time I saw her being flexible

Yea I remember seeing those videos from the 90s on YouTube of her doing the splits, stretching, jumping around, & dancing on stage! & it was with her having shorter hair in the time periods in the video clips, so those had to be concerts in the mid 90s, when she had shorter hair (first the short RED hairdo from the "Colour Of My Love" tour, then the short BLOND/LIGHT BLOND hairdo/aka the "RACHEL FROM FRIENDS BOB" hairdo from the "Falling Into You" tour, that hairstyle was VERY POPULAR back in the day when "Friends" was on the air & the character Rachel, played by Jennifer Aniston, was wearing that hairdo, which is why it was named "the Rachel hairdo" back then lol!)

So yea, Celine has been doing those flexible moves on stage & stuff WAAAAY BEFORE DOING BALLET, that part of her is nothing new to those of us who have been following Celine for 25-30 years lol!

She’s always had an incredible foot arch — my fav picture I can’t find anymore is black and white, her seated in a mesh white top, black trousers, head tilted, long hair flying to the side, and her feet are pressed against the floor in a gorgeous arch a ballerina would die for. That’s usually associated with natural joint laxity so the rest of her being super flexible tracks.

Superstar singer Andrea Bocelli on his TIFF documentary: ‘I’ll retire when I can’t stand to hear my voice anymore’

Bocelli talks about his faith, his former stage fright and his sadness that duet partner Céline Dion is struggling with stiff-person syndrome.

Updated 15 hrs ago

Sept. 9, 2024

By Glenn SumiSpecial to the Star

One of superstar singer Andrea Bocelli’s signature songs is “Time to Say Goodbye,” his massively successful duet with “Phantom of the Opera” star Sarah Brightman.

But the 65-year-old tenor — who’s enjoyed crossover success for more than three decades — isn’t about to say goodbye to his public any time soon.

“I wanted to retire when I met my second wife, Veronica,” said Bocelli, through an interpreter, after the Toronto International Film Festival world premiere of “Andrea Bocelli: Because I Believe,” Cosima Spender’s intimate documentary about his life and work.

“But she was so young and wanted to do more (with my career),” Bocelli said about his wife, Veronica Berti Bocelli, who’s also his manager. “I think I’ll retire when I can’t stand to hear my voice anymore.”

The documentary is anchored by the outdoor concert Bocelli headlined last year at Italy’s Baths of Caracalla. The majestic setting was significant. It was there in 1990 that Luciano Pavarotti, Plácido Domingo and José Carreras recorded their first Three Tenors concert for a televised audience of some 800 million, making them massive crossover artists and inspiring a 31-year-old Bocelli, who was then paying bills singing Sinatra songs at a piano bar, to think such a career was possible.

As the film illustrates, Bocelli always believed he was destined for something big, even if those around him — including his family and friends — didn’t. That faith is suggested in the film’s subtitle, an allusion to his song “Because We Believe,” which he co-wrote with Canada’s David Foster and Foster’s daughter, Amy.

“My faith stems from a very simple concept,” said Bocelli. “I don’t believe we can have a clock without an expert clockmaker — there has to be someone behind the making. The world is so perfectly put together. Humanity is imperfect, but life itself is perfect. I have a foot doctor that told me once, ‘If atheists were to see the human body open with all of its complex systems, they would no longer be atheists.’”

One of the things that comes across vividly in the film is Bocelli’s fearlessness. Born in the small Tuscan village of La Sterza with congenital glaucoma, the singer lost his sight completely after a soccer accident at age 12. In the film, he’s seen skydiving, riding a bicycle while occasionally holding onto his wife’s hand, and saddling up and riding his beloved horse.

Does anything give him fear?

“Yes, near the beginning of my career I suffered from stage fright and I realized it was because my technique was not perfect. When I finally improved my technique, those fears subsided.”

Andrea Bocelli says he wanted to retire when he met second wife Veronica Berti Bocelli, but she wanted to do more with his career.

Although she’s not interviewed for the film, Canada’s Céline Dion shows up in a couple of clips. The two remained friends after their duet “The Prayer” charted in the late 1990s. He’s sad about her struggle with stiff-person syndrome.

“It really hurts me to know that she’s living with this,” he said. “I can understand how it feels to lose your voice. She also has children, so I understand how hard that must be. It really pains me.”

Speaking of children, one of the scene-stealers in “Because I Believe” is Virginia, Bocelli’s daughter with Veronica. We see her making art, practising piano, and she even joins her proud papa in a haunting duet of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah,” performed at Madison Square Garden.

“She’s very musical,” said Bocelli when I asked if Virginia is going to follow in his footsteps. “But we will see. Right now her voice is a child’s voice. It all depends on how it will grow.”

“Andrea Bocelli: Because I Believe” has a repeat screening Friday at 4 p.m. at the Scotiabank Theatre. See tiff.net for details.

Céline Dion’s Doctor Keeps Her Eye on the Prize: Advancing Medicine

https://news.cuansch...ancing-medicine

That was interesting to read. On the upside, SPS's hypothesized mechanism seems to be somewhat related or similar to many other diseases, cancer in this case, any development in their field, technology or treatment, SPS can tinker with. Thanks for keeping us posted!

Btw, in case you know, do SPS patients get spasm episodes while asleep? I thought of it a while back, what if they do and could neither breathe nor call someone's attention for help

I wonder if she actually did sing live into the mic, but they drowned out the vocals and played the prerecorded version since everyone else lip synced also….we’ll never know.

This is in the wrong subject. No clue how and why…

More than anything, it’s her facial expressions that give away the fact that she was lip syncing to some track. There is no issue with the audio itself.

She does always sings even if the pre recorded is on. There’s so many times that her pre recorded glitches and her live mic was on. You can hear her live voice. So when it’s lipped time. She sings along with it but the mic is off for the pre recorded track to take over but still singing along with it. That’s why we can still see her veins in her neck and mostly matches the vibrato movements from her throat and jaw.

Mostly happened in MGWGO, IACBTMN - Remember the 2 nights rehearsal in Las Vegas for the summer tour back in 2018?

E! News just posted this video on their YouTube channel today. It’s the story about Claudette saying that Celine has lost all control of her muscles. I called them out for releasing this video now and making it seem like her current situation when it was a poor translation from almost a year ago!
