Actually, most critics are wrong when reviewing movies.

I certainly don't know anyone who would waste time on money consuming content (books, theatre, movies, music, what have you) that's been panned by people whose artistic sensibilities align with their own, especially with the current glut of entertainment out there. (Unless for the "it's so bad it's good" entertainment a la The Room, etc.)

Anyway, suggest reading the Carl Wilson book, which explores this topic at length and makes for great reading.

To add to the running compendium, this review from the Guardian makes for a good read. Interestingly, the 3rd or 4th one I've seen that also references Aline.

Very complimentary of Celine but not much else.

The former is a a decently realistic and moving premise (I would probably do something similar) given a never un-creepy twist. (Although, to be fair, comparing Rob's love for a stranger in a one-sided text relationship to falling for her much-older manager on the eve of the Eurovision Song Contest, as Céline does in a scene that left my mouth open, is gonzo logic befitting of the singer.) The latter is a great set-up, both for slipping in actual Céline songs, music videos and iconography and for witnessing Dion hand-act as a subject who turns every interview into a therapy session.[…]

 

But unfortunately, only Dion can deliver this combination of cheese, camp, unabashed earnestness and exaggerated sentimentality. […]

 

And it offers some treats for fans of the singer: a shot of Céline shedding a single tear while looking moved, a moment of Céline sing-talking, a chance for her to deliver the line "Ok, Mr Underwear" and have it make sense in context. I appreciate Love Again for this far more than I appreciate its merits as a romcom, which it meets in fits and starts consistently hampered by the presence of cheap-looking text on screen (at this point, I would rather read a phone over someone's shoulder).[…]

 

As a tribute to the singer, the frontrunner remains Aline, the utterly bonkers, unauthorized biopic by French actor Valérie Lemercier. But Love Again, by ceding some space to the Queen of Feelings, has moments that play. I can't say it was good, but that doesn't mean I didn't enjoy it.”

Lower than expected for me ; Jlos marry me did $500k in Thursday’s previews and went to do almost $8 million for the weekend. I’m hopeful this can rack up $4 million by end business Sunday.

Well to be fair, Sony is really spreading this over 2 weekends, with the move up from the original Mother's Day. Most of the promo is just starting to come out and talk shows are scheduled for next week (likely because there was only so much they could reschedule at short notice.)

I saw the movie last night in Los Angeles with my partner. There were actually quite a few people in the theater. (I was surprised... I was mentally prepared to be the only two people there.) They laughed at the funny parts, and everyone seemed to have a good time.

 

I really enjoyed the film. I will definitely go back to see it again soon... I couldn't concentrate on the scenes when there was new Celine music playing in the background. I think I'm going to like all 5 of the new songs.

 

Celine did a really great job. And there are so many memorable Celine moments in the film.

That’s $10K less than what George Foreman did in previews did last Thursday off 4PM starts, and that pic died with $2.9M. Even with Guardians on the marquee, New Line’s Evil Dead Rise made more in its second Thursday yesterday with $780K (-18% from Wednesday, second week of $16.1M, two week total of $48.3M) than Love Again. Not exactly the comps or audiences for Love Again, but eeks. ‘Why, papa, why?’ you ask is Sony is releasing this movie, this weekend. Why are people so bothered about if the movie is a “success” or not or if it gets good reviews or not? Can’t you just enjoy it, or otherwise, for yourself?

 

I’m going to see it on Monday and if we’re the only people there or if the cinema is full it will have no impact on my personal enjoyment of the film.

As a Celine fan for many years, I’ve learned to never rely on critics giving her projects much praise.

 

Although, a lot of the reviews for the film are at least saying kind things about Celine.

I probably care more about reaction (popular or critical, doesn’t matter) to this one than other Céline projects in the past solely because she’s clearly very invested and we need anything and everything to lift her spirits right now.
