mickle07 Posted November 15, 2010 at 02:18 AM Posted November 15, 2010 at 02:18 AM (edited) I watched the Behind The Music episode profiling Jennifer Lopez earlier tonight and something drew a similarity to Celine. When Jennifer Lopez began her singing career, she signed with Sony Music (well actually, Epic Records - the same company as Celine). She released successful albums and when it came time to start work on a new album, Jennifer wanted to take things in a different direction. Sony didn't agree with this and was not supportive of the project. This led to her least successful album commercially - as a result of the lack promotion from Sony. Jennifer Lopez then decided to change record companies and signed with Island/Def Jam. I immediately starting thinking about Celine and "Taking Chances" - this album marked a departure from her previous releases and what was the end result? A lack of promotion really hurt the album's sales - even though many fans would agree that it had tons of potential. Just curious as to what you guys think... CelineAndRene Posted November 15, 2010 at 02:43 AM Posted November 15, 2010 at 02:43 AM (edited) This prob could have gone under 'Random Thoughts' or off topic but I agree story is similar. Personally J-Lo never captivated my attention.. not because I don't like her voice... mainly I don't like her songs Edited November 15, 2010 at 02:44 AM by CelineDionFREEEK "...It's the circle of life. Nmj Posted November 15, 2010 at 02:45 AM Posted November 15, 2010 at 02:45 AM I agree totally, i think its time for a NEW record company but that will never happen Rene and Celine have so many friends at SONY MUSIC and i dont think they will desert them.
mickle07 Posted November 15, 2010 at 02:46 AM Posted November 15, 2010 at 02:46 AM Ooops...sorry about that! I guess I could have posted it there

RLAAMJR. Posted November 15, 2010 at 03:37 AM Posted November 15, 2010 at 03:37 AM I think , Jennifer did the right thing. For Celine, i don't believe it is sony's fault because Rene could always do something for Celine. I think Celine needs another manager, a young one.

That's the thing in show business, you should NEVER mix friendship with work; it always ends bad very true but Celine signed with them at such a young age she grow fond of many of them like Tommy Motola (who is no longer there) i really liked what he did for Celine if he was anywhere else id like it if Celine worked for him again.

Alex_Incognito Posted November 15, 2010 at 04:43 AM Posted November 15, 2010 at 04:43 AM Celine would have been better off dealing with Live Nation----where concerts are #1. Then she could record whatever the hell she wanted. "People pay 20-25 dollars to see you."- Céline Dion, 1990
NancyxxM Posted November 15, 2010 at 09:48 AM Posted November 15, 2010 at 09:48 AM Celine did mix friendship with work... & yeah i do see the same thing jennifer; celine sould change but she wont its just not what she would do bless her. She is to kind and sweet to ditch anyone http://www.socal.com/absolutenm/articlefiles/1987-jane_seymour6.jpg Jane Seymour. Celine Dion.
samart Posted November 15, 2010 at 11:31 AM Posted November 15, 2010 at 11:31 AM Lack of promotion? She was everywhere at that time. And the sales were just fine, it wasn't a huge hit, but 3.4 million copies sold is what I would call successful these days. I really don't get what all the fuss is about. And really, we've been through this lots of times already...
Shaun Posted November 15, 2010 at 11:48 AM Posted November 15, 2010 at 11:48 AM If Celine were trying to build a career I'd agree that changing music companies were the way to go. However, it's clear (and has been for a while) that Rene and Celine don't really care about music sales or chart positions anymore so therefore their record company is simply a means of releasing Celine's material for the fans. That's why they will never leave Sony. Bringing you the world's only Celine Dion podcast show since 2014.Find us on Soundcloud, Apple Podcasts, Spotify & Amazon Music.
celine-rc Posted November 15, 2010 at 12:23 PM Posted November 15, 2010 at 12:23 PM Céline doesn't really care how many albums she sells, she just wants to have fun so I don't think it really matters what Sony thinks. jessx Posted November 15, 2010 at 12:55 PM Posted November 15, 2010 at 12:55 PM 'Taking Chances' did rather well in my opinion. I think it just appears to have not been successful because prior to this album, her albums were selling tens of millions. The same thing happened to Michael Jackson's 'Invincible', it sold almost ten million (I think), but because all the other albums had hit crazy numbers, it appeared to be a flop, when really it wasn't. If you understand what I mean, lol.
wjd Posted November 15, 2010 at 01:07 PM Posted November 15, 2010 at 01:07 PM First of all, it is imperative that Celine releases during the fourth quarter nowadays, to truly maximise her sales potential. Secondly, the album (TC) was moderately successful - selling as much as Britney's Circus, or Madonna's Hard Candy (the last shipment figure we had for it was 3.5m copies from Sony). If you think that wasn't successful, then please - I dread hearing your comments when her new studio album will struggle to sell more than that. Céline Dion, music's greatest ever singer, the biggest-selling Canadian artist of all-time and most successful female live act ever - what's not to love?

I don't think that changed either.
Sofie Posted November 15, 2010 at 07:54 PM Posted November 15, 2010 at 07:54 PM Céline doesn't really care how many albums she sells, she just wants to have fun so I don't think it really matters what Sony thinks. I agree that they'll won't be leaving Sony. I agree. I don't think she cares how many #1 hits she has or if her albums sell one or two times platina. As long as she's enjoying it it's all good. Sure, if she'll have a #1 single again that would be awesome but it's not the main thing anymore.
mickle07 Posted November 16, 2010 at 03:48 AM Posted November 16, 2010 at 03:48 AM I'm in no way suggesting that "Taking Chances" was not a success but many fans on this forum were quick to judge by saying that the album was too much of a departure from the ballads. I was just making the point that it was not as commercially successful as "Falling Into You" or "Let's Talk About Love" for the simple fact that the music industry now vs. then is completely different. And I know we have all talked about this before but I just happened to see the show yesterday and wanted to post about it...

I didn't mean that Celine was not promoting the album - I was referring to the marketing campaign that was severely lacking from Sony's end...

celine4evauk Posted November 16, 2010 at 10:09 PM Posted November 16, 2010 at 10:09 PM Anyone remember the story Celine told in her concerts back in 1998? Its something like this: I know a couple in Quebec. He's 95 and she's 94, and they've been married for 75 years. They filed for divorce. The judge asks why after all those years, and the old man says "Well, we wanted to wait until the kids were dead!" Celine says the funniest things!

fyoung98 Posted November 17, 2010 at 12:06 PM Posted November 17, 2010 at 12:06 PM Does Celine have any blood relatives still living in France that she and her family acknowledge as family? How far removed generationally from France are they on her mother or father's side? Does anyone know? Don't know why I'm curious. Just am. Woke up with the question in my head.
