It's very unfortunate, and sickening really, that a talented artist like R Kelly did the things he allegedly did. I mean, by the time Celine came back in 2002 is when he really got in serious legal trouble. That's probably why she didn't include it in "A New Day..."

 

It is one of Celine's best songs of the 90s and is one of her most unique, I think. I was shocked it was even part of her Vegas show at one point (not sure for how long), but this is probably the last live performance we'll ever see.

Yes, I disagree with it being pulled off her streaming. In fact, I disagree with Céline getting involved in any kind of movement, especially at the expense of her music. She should sing her songs and not get involved in controversial/political matters. I hate it when artists do that so, to me, her involvement in the ‘Mute R Kelly’ campaign was totally inappropriate. Music shouldn’t have to suffer. Also, there’s no reason why she shouldn’t sing the song on tour. She should sing it with Barnev, like she always did, as a duet between the two of them with no mention of R Kelly. It’s a beautiful song that has its own independent life (it doesn’t represent R Kelly) and can be sung by anyone.

Besides royalties, I can imagine she no longer feels comfortable singing it. To some of you it's just a song, but to her it's a very tainted memory. She worked with the guy and might feel pretty gross about that. R. Kelly was a mentor to very young girls who fell in love with him and were then abused by him. Are you honestly surprised that Céline of all people would react strongly to that?

We saw her reaction in an interview last year. She is 100% done with the song.

Continuing to perform the song would be just as active a form of "getting involved in any kind of movement" as not singing it, only she'd be slammed for it if she did. Personally, I can separate the art itself from the artist (there's a lot of art that would be eliminated if we started going down that road), but I definitely agree with the decision and wouldn't want to contribute royalties to R Kelly in any way. Rightly or wrongly, there's also just no way for Céline to maintain connection to the song and not have it negatively impact her reputation and drag her into the controversy. They made the right decision.

 

Kate Bush had a similar-but-different situation a few years ago - Rolf Harris appeared on two of her albums, one much more prominently than the other. The difference being they were her songs that she wrote and Harris essentially was brought in as a session musician/guest vocalist. She never explicitly addressed the issue, but the next issue of the album on which he had a more prominent role came with replacement vocals from her son instead. Personally, I don't like that kind of revisionist history, but it's another example of how to deal with these kinds of situations. Céline couldn't do the same, though, since I'm Your Angel was written by Kelly so there's no way to extricate herself from the situation by rerecording it.

 

Artists have a responsibility to "get involved" in important matters. You may disagree with their position, but they're not there just to shut up and sing as so many people would have it. They hold a position of influence and are humans just like the rest of us - should we all remain quiet about injustice in our everyday lives, too? Should artists not get involved in projects like Save Darfur or Songs For Tibet? What about Live Aid? Would you have preferred Céline said absolutely nothing about Katrina, or the Las Vegas shootings? That would have looked callous and ignorant.
