June 10 & 11th - First shows of summer run!

Ive been following this forum for a very long time. I was at the June 11th show. My mother and I were by the stage in ROW KK. A few rows behind Tristian. I just wanna say how awesome it was to be there. Ive been a big Celine fan for a about 6 years now and being there last week was a night I will never forget. It was a spectacular show, the energy from the fans was great. When INCREDIBLE's chorus started and the fans jumped up in the first row (the very sexy fans lol, I had no idea Celine had such a big gay fanbase) it was great. That was a great idea, had I not read it here that they thought of that I would not have known. It really caused the whole audience to folow suit and get up and dance along and sing. I just loved her singing The Reason, my favorite vocal that night. Thank you so much Tristian for the audio from that night. I can now hold on to that forever.

Also I will just say that Celine's voice is not just at the same level as it was in 94-98, it is at her absolute peak. I don't know how it's possible, but she has superseded herself.

Yeah, it's really interesting (and challenging) to actually describe how her voice today is better. I would say that she's found a way to manage her range in a way that doesn't strain her tone, which is what hurt her in the past. In 94 (or at least during the TCOML sessions) she had a superb balance of resonance and power, but it wasn't sustainable, since she ended up wearing it down as she embarked on tours and promo performances. In the years that followed, she pushed her voice to new heights, but always at the expense of her naturally sweet, dark, seductive tone. This time around, she is able to power through an entire show of (mostly) live performances while walking a very fine line between range and depth. She's more careful about her ad-libbing but also more deliberate. She does what she knows she can do and uses better technique when she does it, but seems to surprise herself by doing more than she thought capable of; these surprises give her joy and push her to experiment more and go further in her renditions. That's what strikes me the most about these recent performances - her intentionality. Every note is there for a reason. She is re-creating these songs as opposed to replicating them. She is on top of the melody as opposed to struggling underneath it. Gone is the nasal quality of the 00's, and in its place is a rich, flexible, powerful instrument that seems to be immune to strain and over-extension. I am deeply impressed by her commitment to improving her craft, and she has most definitely reaped the rewards of her discipline and dedication.

 

I remember feeling somewhat uneasy, and even a little bit sad, when ANDHC came out. Her voice was still powerful and capable of stratospheric heights, but something was missing. The soul and quiet intensity of Celine in her quieter moments was gone, and singing seemed a lot more difficult for her. I worried that I would never get the "old" Celine back, and that her older recordings would be all that I had of this powerful and heart-melting instrument. These recent years have restored my faith in the endless regenerative power of her voice and have made me look forward to the years to come.

I would add that I want to hear this new voice on an ALBUM ... I don't want another album of hard-edged grainy vocals sans reverb, although I appreciate the stylistic turn. I want Celine to release an album that puts FIY and LTAL to shame, an album that showcases her natural voice to its fullest extent.

Great post. I think sometimes we forget exactly how incredible it is that Celine still sounds the ways she does after so many years of singing such vocally grueling songs.

 

I think Celine's calmer and less stressful schedule has contributed to stronger, more fluid vocals since 2011. When I was in the audience for the premiere of CELINE, I really couldn't believe how she sounded. I had grown used to and had come to appreciate Celine's newer sound -- as was present during ANDHC until the TC world tour -- but when she sang so effortlessly again with so much of her youthful tone restored, I was mesmerized. Like you, I thought those days were gone.

 

But now I think she will continue onward with strong vocals for many years to come -- like Barbra Streisand. Celine has taken great care of her voice and it really shows.
