Music Videos for New English Album

Recommended Posts

I know we don't know what the first single will be yet but we do have enough information about the upcoming album to start speculating what the overall aesthetic should be for promotion, music videos, Celine's fashion, etc.

So based on Celine's own music videos from years gone by and on music videos from other artists, which direction do you think her team should take for the new English singles? Celine is not a star of today's social media world. Many current artists understand how Youtube/Vevo works and target their music videos towards those mediums. What kind of style for Celine would stand out in today's world of YouTube?

The first ones that come to my mind are:

Adele's SOMEONE LIKE YOU video. In this stunning black and white video, there is a timeless quality. It's solemn, classy, and perfectly suited for a One-of-a-kind-voiced Diva.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hLQl3WQQoQ0

Whitney Houston's I LOOK TO YOU

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Pze_mdbOK8

I think these sort of simple videos, where it's all about the voice and glamour of the artist is wise for Icons like Whitney and Celine. Simplicity is key.

Whitney Houston's MILLION DOLLAR BILL

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wNIcVTmUSOU

I think a video that's still simple, but also with an element of fun, would be a big breath of fresh air for Celine's career. It's important that all of her videos don't take themselves too seriously. There is also a retro quality to this music video, which would be a breath of fresh air for Celine.

Celine's THAT'S THE WAY IT IS

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T6wbugWrfLU

This is one of Celine's standout music videos. She looks like a POP STAR/ICON. It's simple yet fun yet meaningful and sexy. Great shots and an effortless quality. She really was at stardom her peak in 1999.

Celine's A NEW DAY HAS COME

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NaGLVS5b_ZY

The only part that I don't love about this video is Celine in the clouds. It sounds cheesier than it actually appears. And it suits the whole theme of a new day dawning. Otherwise, this video is great example of focus remaining on Celine and her beauty/voice -- but still has snippets of story. It's full of stunning shots as well.

Kelly Clarkson ALREADY GONE

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f0T3WAbU6tg

Like Leona's BLEEDING LOVE, these sorts of videos are great modern day ballad music videos. I would love for Celine to go all out and be a total glamourous Diva in one of her videos.

Adele's ROLLING IN THE DEEP

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rYEDA3JcQqw

Simple, powerful, all about the song and artist. A kick #ss video like this would be welcome to Celine's repertoire.

I would actually rather them not go in the direction of "That's The Way It Is", "A New Day Has Come", "Have You Ever Been In Love" etc. These videos all have the same theme...they're all about other people's relationships and Celine is either in a room or in front of a green screen the entire time...I'd rather her be involved in the story line ala "Taking Chances", "It's All Coming Back To Me Now", or "I Want You To Need Me"...I want her to act out the song.

I agree! The video is always more interesting when the artist does more than simply sing :) It would be awesome if they took that approach.

Thanks for the replies so far! :)

I'm usually not a big fan when an artist acts out a song. There is, however, something epic about the music video for IT'S ALL COMING BACK TO ME NOW -- but an epic song requires an over-the-top music video!

I think acting out can come off a bit cheesy. Like so many county music videos when they often make obvious and literal choices (when the singer literally act out what the lyric says). For example:

Lyric: "He opened the car door and saw her smile"

Action: (The actor opens a car door, and standing outside the car is a woman smiling at him.)

I'd be more open to it if was abstracted and meaningful -- not trite and obvious. One of the only times, in Celine's career, that I like her "acting" a song is for POUR QUE TU M'AIMES ENCORE.

Or JE SAIS PAS

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zCsuKp9ewLY

Otherwise, I'd prefer there to be others in the video acting out abstracted representations of the song. Such as ZORA SOURIT

Direction? Definetly not the one of standing in front of the camera like a rock with a green screen behind and not doing any move :innocent: Céline needs to be PART of her videos and have the leading role of the story, not to be just an insipid narrator.

What i hope it's not to be announced like a huge and expensive super production like TC and then be such a crap of video with nonsense and she dressed like a dragqueen....

Then I hope that they don't make a easy video of her possing like a imitation of Diva with hands here and there and doing nothing edited with scenes of other doing the things (like the Sans Attendre videos)

And Finally I reaaaally hooope there is noo green screen and computer backgrounds...

I think it should be a stylish video with some kind of story.. with a dedicated production and some kind of artistry.. not a standard video.here some examples I think it would suit...

If you only want to posse, ok, but try to have some act.. this one reminds me of the "Opposites" WAAF... hehehe

To take some risks but still so classy

This one could be related to Vegas show..

And to take a real risk and a real act, here Florence Walsh makes a really good acting in a cool video..

Or JE SAIS PAS

I think these two videos are standouts among Céline's career. The video for PQTME is so much more interesting than most. I like that the creative team here obviously pushed her beyond the typical, "stand and sing the song while looking pretty" idea. I love this video, and would love to see something along these lines. Same with the video(s) for JSP. These videos show what Céline is capable of as an actress. I also particularly love the videos for TPOL and Only One Road -- just like JSP and PQTME, one is bit more simple, and one is more "artistic," but they're both beautiful.

I would just hope for interaction with someone, anyone.

Agreed. I don't know why filming videos in Vegas means that they so often filmed in front of a green screen, or why all of the action of the video takes place without Céline. All her most recent videos (PAMP, Le Miracle, QPVSA), though well done, involve footage of other people interacting with each other, while she only shows up in performance shots.

(To be honest, I really wish that the video for QPVSA had been more of a straight forward performance video -- I loved the warehouse setting and the way Céline looked, I just wish they'd have thrown a band in with her and made it a bit more like

or the performance scenes in
. I also think that sort of thing would have suited "Taking Chances" well, too.)

I also love the idea of things that are more like both of the Adele videos mentioned in the first post. "Somebody Like You" is beautiful and understated. "Rolling in the Deep" is kind of austere and powerful, and well, pretty cool.

ANYWAY, I could probably dissect Céline's music videos for days, and I've kind of gone off topic. Overall, I think they just kind of need a bit of a fresh approach , and I wish that the videos felt more like the team really treated them like an integral part of the process; it seems like lately they're more of an afterthought.

Totally agree! Apart from TC and IA, I don't think any of her videos since 2002 have involved Celine interacting with other people...

Yeah!! Like... René.... Thérèse... and herself without makeup! :lmao: :sofunny: :P

It depends on the kind of song of course... but I would love a more modern approach! I don't need a whole movie, like Tyler Swifts I Knew You Were Trouble... but it could be a bit more like that: a real story would be nice for a change! We haven't had that since... I dunno? IWYTNM?

Artists pay out of their own pockets to film music videos. So in Celine's case, it depends how much Rene wants to spend to promote her music with videos. While I'd like some artistic videos with a storyline and stylish art direction but history has shown that Rene and Celine would rather spend less and have Celine just standing there and doing nothing.

Speaking of artists paying for thier own music videos - Lady Gaga has said that she hasn't made much money from her music as she has spent "like crazy" for her music videos. I don't know if its money well spent but, whether they're good or bad, her music videos are an event in themselves.

I'm not pretty sure about this... maybe it is my unknowlegde but I think that the music videos are produced by the label, not the artists...

Lady Gaga's Marry the Night was produced by Factory Films and distributed by Interscope Records according to IMDB.com (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2153889/companycredits)

So I think it depends of Sony about how much they spend in the video...

I agree with "smw" I feel like music videos like RITD and SLY and Whitney's would be good directions. Or even videos like PQTME and JSP. Personally I hope they avoid videos like IACBTMN that just felt forced and way to over the top and dramatic and while in the 90s that worked I don't see it working now in today's age.

It's probably her best English video so I wouldn't mind if she tries something like this again.

Yeah! Why they had the time to do those... and not have time to shoot a sexy video for Eyes On Me is still beyond me!
