D'Eux - Meaning of Songs for Celine

Recommended Posts

In Celine's autobiography, she says, "I've always considered D'Eux to be my most successful album, the most fully realized from every point of view. It's also one of her most personal, and she says that "D'Eux is basically the story of Rene and me." So I'm trying to understand the meaning of each of the songs for Celine.

She has said that Je Sais Pas is the song that fits her the most -- she's strong and bounces back quickly, but doesn't know about surviving in a world without the people she loves. (And I've seen her quote in interviews "je suis pas victime; je suis pas colombe" (I'm not a victim; not a dove). Pour Que Tu M'Aimes Encore seems to be about the way she loves -- the intense, all-consuming nature of it; J'Irais ou Tu Iras also seems to be about the lifestyle of Celine and Rene at that time, traveling all the time, finding home in each other. Vole is obviously about Karine, and Destin would seem to be about her destiny of being a performer.

But what about the other songs? Regarde-Moi? Le Ballet? These sound like they may be about the overwhelming nature of show business? For La Memoire D'Abraham and Priere Paienne, I have no idea. And Cherche Encore? Les Derniers Sont Les Premiers?

Just wondering what other's thoughts are about the meaning of these songs for Celine.

I remember she talked about the meaning of 'Les Derniers Seront Les Premiers' in an interview diuring one of those TV specials to support the album. I think she said something like everytime she is in her limousine and looks through the window and sees the poor people, sitting down on the street and askin for money, she always thinks "in another life, the last ones will be the first ones".

This made me think that she probably believes in re-encarnation (like me) apart of being catholic.

speaking 'bout Deux.. does anyone thinks, like me, that Eddie Money's "Take Me Home Tonight" melody is VERY similar to Les Derniers Seront Les Premiers?! Just heard it today and... OMG! love it!

Anyone knows where the person who uploaded this video got the audio?? This track is not on the 15th anniversary edition of 'D'eux', so... where did he get it?

This track was included in the D'eux 15th anniversary edition as a special bonus you could only listen to online. You had to run the CD on a computer to access it I think.

I just listened to Celine's Les Derniers Seront Les Premiers performance from the Live A Paris concert again and I so love that performance and that song.

She never sang it again live, right? Is there a more current version or performance of the song?

Did she ever sing Cherche Encore live?

She sang LDSLP during the Francophone shows of the FIY Tour. She also sang it with the Star Academie contestants in 2009.

Cherche encore & La mémoire d'Abraham are the only songs from D'eux that have not been performed live.

for Regarde moi, i think she's talking about the lack of control one could have over things, her career, she wants the help of the person beside her to help her, to keep the perspective on things. She could stop , but won't do it, even if it makes her overwhelmed in a certain way. It is like a giant amusement park ride, that you like but let you stunted at the end. She is afraid ,but will continue. And in the end she wonders what this is all about...wants to understand but know she won't.

It's such a shame "Cherche encore" has never been performed live. It has a great energy to it. I could see "Regarde-moi" and "Cherche encore" fading from one to the other a la "It's All Coming Back To Me Now"/"The Power Of Love".

I always have to keep translating this and it gets somewhat lost for me. I can see what you say.

Wow - thanks so much, quebecflower! I never understood the French well enough to get this song. . but now it makes sense as a song for Celine. It's even a little bit of the same themes you see Linda Perry tackling in My Love.

While we're talking about D'Eux, I have to say that I think the line from Destin "Je vois dans vos yeux mes lendemains" (I see in your eyes my tomorrows) is one of my favorite lines ever - beautiful, poetic, romantic, sweet - and delivered with such flair. Need to go listen to this album again!

i yes , it makes sense, Regarde moi is the beginning with all the young enthusiasm and my love the end, after all the crazyness, from someone who have seen it all.

this is the most sincere album she has done, i think ...Le ballet is talking about a love that is there, right in front of you, and you can't do nothing but succomb to it. This is a very sexy song also..

I also remember her once saying to Sonia Benezra (in that 1997 interview in Caesar's Palace) that sometimes she'll get bad anxiety at night, when everyone's sleeping, and all she wants is for Rene to just *look* at her - and then she says, of course, you don't want to wake up your husband and ask him to look at you, it sounds crazy . . .but I wonder if that feeling is the same as what's in this song. . . Regarde-Moi.. . Look at Me. His looking at her makes her able to cope with all the overwhelming things.

can be, she has had some overwhelming moments in her life...she needs him big time. He is her touchstone.

I never really thought about it but Deux is a pretty personal album for her. It's a shame Cherche Encore has never been performed live. It has great energy and it's one of my favorites on the album!

Part of me wonders now with SA which album she considers the most personal for her. Both reflect such significant aspects of her life.

I would think for SA that "Parler à Mon Père" was the most personal for her, cause it's pretty obvious :)

I love the gospel and the jazz/blues sound of this album.

'D'eux' is a true masterpiece, but I think it's pretty clear that 'Sans Attendre' is her most personal album by far; which is proven by songs like 'Parler à mon Père', 'La Mer et L'enfant', 'Celle Qui M'a Tout Appris', 'Moi Quand Je Pleure' and 'Les Petits Pieds de Lea'.
