Maybe it's a question of rights for the songs. I don't understand how it works. Someone who understands it could explain. I don't know what happened to her ex labels Saisons and TBS which released her '80 albums. Still Sony released some of those songs as a part of "On ne change pas" in 2005.

 

I don't think its a problem of rights, because Sony already released a compilation of these songs in 1997 in Germany, "Les Premieres Années", and in France also a 2CD set with the same title, under "Versailles" a branch of Sony Music France for old releases.

 

Maybe a separate release of each album wouldn't be profitable, but they could have released all the albums together in a boxset or something

I've been thinking a lot about Celine's French career. And how it's really the basis of her entire success. Particularly her work with Eddy Marnay. David Foster gets a lot of credit for building Celine's career. And I actually get annoyed by the "tent" story -- how David discovered this little French girl in a tent. But, really, Celine Dion was already a huge star in French speaking areas. And doesn't that credit go to Eddy (and Rene)? I think it's incredibly special that Celine named one of her sons after Eddy. Does anyone have more information on their relationship and the songs he created with her?

Really? Ridiculous! I've never heard it before. David helped Celine for her career in English but she already had one in French (thanks to Rene and Eddy, of course).

He really did first meet her when she was singing in a tent -- Celine herself says this, introducing him when she sings BYLM at the David Foster & Friends show. The story is in "My Story, My Dream": David had seen a video of her singing, and wanted to work with her, but wanted to see her sing live first. She says in the book:

 

But as luck would have it, at the time David was passing through Quebec, the only performing I was doing was a show for a group of vacationers, under a tent at Saint-Agathe in the Laurentides. Rene tried really hard to make him put off his put off his trip. "In two weeks, Celine will be performing at the most important theater in Montreal," he said. "Under ideal conditions." David decided not to put off the trip. He came to the show . . .It was a really hot day. And it was pouring. The air inside the tent was humid, suffocating. The sound was horrible. At times the rain hammered so loudly on the roof that it was almost impossible to hear the music.

 

Nonetheless, David was of course beyond impressed by Celine, and the rest is history

I was looking on the inside cover of one of my old, revised in 2002 Celine album's, called The French Love Album. Inside it said that Celine's album sales had been studied by statisticians who said that someone somewhere around the glode buys a Celine album every 1.2 seconds. The time it takes to blink an eye.

 

I don't know if anyone has noticed that before, but i just found that very intersting. Our Celine is like a global disease. LOL. The best disease you can have of course!

Shame on me, but I have never listened to "En Concert". And I have it on LP, but I've never opened it and I don't have a turntable. Will have to look for it on another configuration.

En concert really is a sign of the times, but I love it. I wish it included the other songs she performed that evening. The medleys were superb on the album and her covering "Carmen" is nothing short of magical.

 

They really do seem to forget that her humble beginnings weren't with Sony and that she was a huge success in Francophone canada and had a few hit singles in France before Unison changed her life.

 

I'll always adore her music from this period. They, to me, are timeless and my favorite.

They would talk to each other and he could take what she said and make such wonderful songs about what she was going through in her life. She also said he was like a father figure to her. It's sad, none of this stuff is out there for people to read in English because it's only been played for french speaking listeners but there has been a lot said in her career about him. But...as of late we hear little about him. There was a tribute back in the early 2000s and before that it was the medley on "Au cœur du Stade."

I couldn't agree more with you, Alex. And I would add that Céline is still in debt with Eddy Marnay. She hasn't paid him tribute the way he deserved, and I can't understand why. How come she finds time to be "paying tribute" in her shows to people she hasn't even met like Stevie Wonder, Billy Joel (even newcomers like Adele!), and she doesn't find the time to honour the man who wrote her no less than 5 albums and help her build her early career??? I find it disgusting. That man wrote real songs who would pale in shame many of the english material she has received lately.

 

The Simplement Marnay show in 2003 was nice, but we don't even have a video footage of it, nor an audio quality recording to enjoy. She should have done something else...

weirdly i was listening to all these things recently and especially her earlier stuff - i go through massive phases of listening to les premiers annees on my ipod - i appreciate these songs weirdly much much more now than i did when i was 16/17, still listening to them but thinking that they sounded so dated. But a lot of them are so haunting. I completely forgot about the medley she did on Au Coeur du stade and it came on the other day, 'd'amour ou d'amite' and i was like - this is suuuuch a good version! love how its so stripped down and the long note at the end - its hair raising - she should re-record them for this century...i think they could sound fantastic. Although she probably already should have done that as by now clearly they will sound nasal and horrendous. Which reminds me - i dared to listen to 'a new day' after au couer du stade and 'At last' came on and i remembered why i swore id NEVER listen to it again - omg its soooooo bad sooooo soooo bad - so bad that if i was an alien coming down to earth now and celine dion was represented with that cd i would burn it haha. "and then the SPEEEEWWW WAS CAAAAASHT" UUUUghhhh sooooo awful.

Even on the Katie Couric show -- someone who went to the taping mentioned that in the part that they (unfortunately) cut, they asked Celine, "If you could have dinner with any 3 people, dead or alive, who would it be?" -- and she said her father, her niece Karine -- and Eddy.

 

The songs Eddy wrote for her were wonderful, perfect for her at that stage of life, and she's always given him a lot of credit -- but they were songs for a teenager. I think it would be bizarre if they were a primary part of her repertoire at age 45.

I disagree. Many songs can still be sung as a 45-year old woman. Maybe not "D'amour ou d’amitié" or "Mon ami m'a quittée" , but songs like "Tu es la", "Toi sur la montagne", "Dis-moi si je t'aime" can still be performed.

I guess I see what you mean (and I'd love to hear her sing them) -- I'm just saying I understand why she doesn't want to focus on the songs she recorded 25-30 years ago - she's in a different place in her life now. I think she can (and does) pay tribute to Eddy the person and all he has done for her without having to sing his songs at this point in her life.

I just listened to the "En Concert" album and I have to say that it's superb. Her voice is so timeless. I sometimes don't understand when people call her songs dated, as I don't find anything dated with her new material, neither her old one. It transports me back in time, but I feel as she were singing these songs today, and here's when I have to comment about her singing those songs today. Even if she were 90 and sang them, the timelessness, emotion and what the songs evoke would be as magical as they were when she sang them for the first time. I don't see a problem in that.

I guess what I mean is -- I think you pay tribute to a *person,* not their songs -- and Celine very much does this with Eddy in many ways, most notably naming her son after him. But she sings songs that touch her or are meaningful or work for a particular show or a particular stage of life, regardless of who wrote them. I don't think she's paying tribute to Billy Joel by singing Lullabye -- I think that's a song that resonates with right now, and that works for this show she's doing right now, so she includes it.

 

Celine always says that she sings songs that she *feels* -- that touch her or move her, regardless of whether they're covers or written for her or anything. I think it's very rare for her sing song as a tribute to a writer or artist, except in special instances like the Whitney Houston special.

Exactly the same track list as we have come to expect from all those 2 CD compilations, (e.g. The Collection 82-88, Solid Gold, The Best Of The Early Years, The French Collection etc etc etc....)

 

Still I do really like the artwork and look of this one. But really? Did we need yet another re-release of this same CD. My hopes have been dashed too fast. Still Im gonna keep an eye out for it in the stores.
