Teachers: The good, the bad and in between.

Hello all,

I created this little place where anyone can come in and talk about your teachers. This topic can also be used to talk about other people who may be working at your school, like the administration staff and so on (that if you happen to talk to then like I do sometime).

Just a reminder that this is a public forum and you are expected to use some common sense.

Have fun!

Risky topic... but I'll refrain from all the negative comments about teachers I've despised growing up.

Right now, I absolutely love my Psychology professor! Very seldom do I find a teacher that can grab my attention... and keep it! It's her personal stories she shares, as well as her comedic timing. Her abundant swearing makes me laugh, too.

Daniel, you can't possibly initiate a topic like this without telling us your stories!

Like CelineandRene, I'll spare you all the rants about the teachers I didn't like! :P I had two that really stood out in my mind as being great. One was my science teacher in 6th grade. She was kind, smart, witty, and made class fun. She was also very caring...one day I was having, um, female issues and felt like I was going to pass out, and she actually left class for a few minutes so she could walk me to the nurse's office. In December, I was at work and this lady came up to my register saying, "Hi, I have a return..." It was her! I literally hadn't seen her since 2004, so it was crazy. She kept going on about how tall and grown up I was, and she gave me a hug while I was printing out her receipt.

The other one was my 9th grade math teacher. He was young and jokey with the class, but he also knew how to discipline us and make us pay attention. I had a lot of trouble in math, and he gave me a lot of extra help because he could see how much I was struggling to understand. He was very patient and had a way of explaining things so that you'd get them right away. He was also pretty cute, and I developed a big crush on him. :blushing1: Haha.

I really love the idea of starting this topic! It's amazing. Well, I can say that I have had many teachers in my life (I've been changing French teachers in the middle of the the year, every year since grade six so, for the past five years). For example, last year, my math teacher, HP (some of you probably know him because I used to talk about him a lot), was the worst math teacher (no, second worse) math teacher that I ever had. In secondary two (before I changed schools), a math teacher pretty much told me that I was stupid when he suggested that we started back in Kindergarten. I did have one really good math teacher in secondary one though. She actually made me like math!

As far as the French goes, I had a really, really, really bad, incompetent teacher in grade six for the second half of the year! She didn't work, she sat at her computer eating peanuts while i was explaining the work to the other students. It was terrible! On the contrary, last year, secondary three, I had S (who I often talk about here... :shy: :giggle: ) She's the total opposite, the most amazing teacher that I have ever had for so many teachers. She has given me so much (and still is). I find it amazing to see now how much a teacher can impact your life, as much in a good way as in a bad way.

I've changed 3 schools, had over 20 teachers but maybe only 3 or 4 of them were really good. The rest... I don't even want to remember them! When I finished school, I met a man who used to be a teacher but left his job after a personal misfortune. He really loves children, he knows how to treat them right, he's probably one of the best teachers in the world!

All of my teachers were great except my Kindergarten teacher. I am visually impaired and I had to sit in the front row and have everything in large print. All of my worksheets were on double sized paper and I had to fold it in half so it would fit with all the rest of my classmates' papers.

Well, my Kindergarten teacher wouldn't put me in the front row because the class wouldn't be in alphabetical order and she wouldn't give me large print anything. My mom finally went to the superintendent and NONE of my other teachers acted like my Kindergarten teacher did.

Now, something positive. My favorite teacher was my 5th grade teacher. On the first day of school, she told us this exact quote, "There is no such thing as a stupid question. If you ask a question and somebody laughs, then they will be standing at recess." That is the best thing I have ever heard anyone say.

Well my mom is a teacher so I see the side of teachers students rarely see, what appeals to them in a student and what annoys them, allowing me to hit just the right spot and more often than not, become their favorite ^_^

Are you willing to share your secrets?

Sure thing! Well first, you have to have good grades. And for those good grades be extremely humble, but not to the point where you say "my grades suck!" cause that's just screaming for a compliment. Then don't overly complement them, my mom finds that creepy and it immediately notes you as a kiss up (in a bad way). Be quiet, but when having discussions interact and share analytical things, something no one else in your class has brought up my mom loves when people think OUTSIDE THE BOX. Also, smile with your teeth when walking thru the halls, rather than saying "Hi Miss ___!" or even avoid eye contact sometimes, make them say hi to you. And the thing that irks my mother the most is when students see her at a store and make a big stink about it to go say hi, then bring it up in class again "so i saw you at ___ yesterday..." my mom says that's the most annoying thing.

I have used these methods since the 3rd grade and so far has gotten me All School girl and #1 in my class ^_^

Thank you for the advice Kay! I have to say (I hope this doesn't sound too weird) that I really enjoy talking to teachers, for things like this, among others. I find it's fun to hear what they like, what they don't like, what it's really like to be a teacher and all. One day, S was talking to me about her job and all and I was really surprised to hear certain things, about students and all. I will keep smiling to teachers when I see them in the halls! :)

I've had soo many experiences with teachers like the good ones, and bad ones. This past semester at the community college I attended and just graduated from I had the worse Professor for statistics. I wish I would have went to ratemyprofessors before taking her class. This lady was no help at all, she played favorites, and denied help to those who were struggling. Ugh so mad! Then this one prof I had for general psych and two of my social work classes, never taught us anything. All he did was go into tangents about things that had no relation to the class. Though as being a future social worker he did give us some insight on how it is and what to expect in the industry of social work.

One thing that urks me about a teacher or a professor is when they aren't doing their job, constantly complaining, and being disorganized. I love the fact that also some of them find it easier to blame things on the student when they are at fault of not running their classes right.

How about a thread about students? Nothing is more annoying that having students email you the day after grades are posted begging you to give them extra credit.

Now that would get me pissed off, worse thing you complain about it and the teacher start bringing it up in class, I got this teacher where at one point I couldn't say anything bad about him (within reasons) without worrying about anything.

i just feel that just because they make up the assignments or just teaching the class that they can do what ever they want to do to in the class. Btw I am just trying to say things here. I do not want to offend anyone.

Is it normal that I find it irritating that my french teacher isn't organized, that I have to correct her (like tell her that we don't have class that day ) ?

You musn't forget that your teacher has to keep track of your class and all of their other classes. You only have to take care of your assignments in your classes. They have a lot more to remember and a lot more responsibility.

I hate it when teachers take their sweet little time on grading tests. Anything more than a week is obscene and lazy and untimely.

^Tyler, you would have a fit at my school. Each teacher has about 90 tests to correct. It takes about a month. With certain teachers, we either forgot that we even did that test when we finally get it back, or, I know that there are tests that we never even got back! I understand that they have a lot of work, they have a life and that it takes a while but after about six months... I find it depends on the teacher, HP last year, never worked on the week-end so it took a long time, then, there's my science teacher this year, we get it back, most of the time, the next day (which I find amazing! ).

I know. She has been here since February. At first, it was normal that she got the groups mixed up a bit, that things were a bit unclear but after like four months, (she's the only one who's so confused), it's getting annoying. She's still at university! She can't give us the right dates for our assigments. Once I have the date, I'm fine. It's the fact that even after four months, she's not organized !

I had one teacher who took over a month to grade a test and she finally got so shitty of me asking EVERY DAY when she would always say she hadn't started them yet that she finally yanked mine from the pile and graded it right in front of my face.

I understand certain tests may take longer, but come on....the teacher can't possibly expect the student to get all of the hours and hours of homework done in one night if they can't just suck it up and do their hours of grading in one night either. The logic that there is more to keep track of, etc...sure that makes sense. But hearing that excuse is like hearing "my dog ate my homework" ....*yawn* NEXT!

You're only looking at it from the students point of view.

Exactly, Ray. They don't consider the pedagogical side of things like how long it takes to come up with a lesson plan and how we decide what to assign as homework.

That's very true. That's why it doesn't bother me that it takes a little while to get our tests back. They do have a lot to do. :)
