A lot of things have changed after a long time and I'll be serious at this moment. First of all, Celine has never been my number one artist. Some of you guys know which artist is my number one and heart affair since my childhood... Back to her, so what Celine means to me? She is not a real artist, she is not a real musician. I mean she is not a songwriter and she can't play on guitar or piano. Celine is only a singer who sings the songs written by others and sometimes she uses playback. And of course she is a mother and a happy wife with happy life. So nothing special.

Celine really means everything to me, I view her as my music mother lol. Celine is my favorite singer in the world. Even though there maybe singers better,she will always be my favorite,if im angry,sad,happy etc,. Celine cheers me up,and has songs that fit with the things i go through. I really love her, i discovered her music, during my depression,and i've made wonderful progress since then. I listen to one of her songs at least once a day,i've bought all her albums,and i never buy music,but i love her that much,that i will support her no matter what. I don't know what else to say lol

I guess ONE thing Celine means to me, or one reason I love her, is that she worked her #ss off to get where she is now, and she proved that you can make it to the top of your chosen profession and you don't have to be conniving, backstabbing, or ungracious to do it, like so much cynicism suggests is the only way. Speaking of which, there's the lack of cynicism in many of her songs, that there's so much positive energy and light in her work, in a world where joy without irony or hipster subversion is increasingly uncool. It's nice to have an artist who's so willing to believe with you that life is only getting better and better.

I have only around one thousand posts during more than eight years here. I've never shared my negative feelings here during this long time. So can I have a little space for critical or negative opinions? It doesn't mean that I'm not her fan anymore. I completely agree with you... When I joined this forum (9 years ago! time flies...) I was really young and had no time to discover new music (I had more than enough with Celine's discography), but since few years, I've been discovering many other artists. Céline's voice is flawless. I think there's no other voice like hers, and thats what amazes me the most. Her stage presence is fierce, and only few can belt notes like she does. But she's just that, she's just a singer. Her improvisations lack on improvisation. They're quite calculated, doing some runs and some "mmm baby ouhouh ouh, love baby mm ouhouh". What about changing the lyrics? That would be a nice improvisation.

 

She doesn't play instruments (not at the stage), she doesn't write her own songs, she doesn't even get involved in the process of making an album. She goes to the studio, follows the instructions and that's it. She is in charge on some things in her career, yes, but not in her music. I don't blame her for that, I just accept it the way she is, and I still love her. For example, lately i've been listening "Des mots qui sonnent" from L'Olympia, and I can't help thinking how good she sounds there, her strength and the clearness of her voice (no one can be so good at it). But if she would do this song nowadays she would bring nothing new to it. Once you hear a song sung live, you know how it will sound from now on, except for I'm alive (which I praise them for the remix, I think that was a brilliant movement and she and her team should do this more often). If I'm lucky enough to attend to another concert of hers, I know that TPOL, BYLM, MHWGO, etc. will have the same arrangements as they were in Dublin when I saw her... They haven't even take the chance (taking what...?) that the whole orchestra is offering in Las Vegas.

 

As I said, I accept her the way she is, but it's not true that she's the best artist in the world... NOT even in the TOP 1000. She might be the best singer, not the best artist.

Celine is a performer, not a singer-songwriter. They're just entirely different professions -- and she is an immensely gifted performer who works very hard to create spectacular shows. Her voice is beautiful, of course -- I think we all agree on that -- but more than that - she interprets and *inhabits* the songs she sings -- performs them with such intensity and passion that the songs touch millions of people.

 

Her greatest strength has always been live performance -- it's what she loves the most and does the best. We all want to elevate Celine to greater heights. But we shouldn't give mis-truths about her success. Celine has never won 20 Grammy Awards - in truth, she's won 5. An extraordinary accomplishment at that.

 

Also, I've also read posts where Celine has won the Academy Award. Yes, songs she's sung were Oscar winners but she herself was never awarded the prestigious award.

 

About the American Music Awards, I'm surprised she's only won 7. With her enormous popularity she should've had more as the public votes for the AMAs. And you'd think she'd have more Billboard Awards considering her chart successes. Things that make you go hmmm....

Just to clarify, though she is not prolific in either when it comes to her own career, Celine HAS written songs, and she CAN in fact play the piano. Yes it would have been nice to see her extend these talents to her own career more than she has done, but it would be incorrect to say she cannot do either of these things.

Now, I'll throw in my two cents about what she means to me:

 

She has been an inspiration since day one, and that goes back to somewhere in 1991, I think February, when I heard WDMHBN for the first time on American Top 40. I was mesmerized by her voice, and she has been with me in several important parts of my life. She helped me get inspired to write several essays in college, and I wrote my thesis on translation by using one of Chuck Taylor's interviews.

 

She has also inspired me to write some songs, my favorite being the one I wrote when my granddad passed away. I based it on the melody of "Je Lui Dirai" and wrote it in Spanish.

 

Of course I have made good friends here in the forum, which is amazing.

 

Finally, I met my husband who is also an avid Celine fan, so our lives are filled with our passion for her music...

I agree and disagree with many of the posts above, Celine is one of the best singers in the world(if not the best) she has stuck with fans for the last 32 years only taking a break to start a family and that was only for a very short time, Celine does know how to play the piano it is her biography by georges Herbert germain, in that book it says celine plays the piano but she choses to not show the world that she can play the piano because she dosent meet her own standards of playing the piano, Yes she does cover a lot of songs but that means nothing, it means she has the talent to sing them, many of them making them huge songs. Well after reading alot positive and some negative comment, so this is my two cent. For me Celine is my inspiration to pursue my dream, to be what i want to be and just be the way i am. Like some of you point out that she doesn't play instrument or doesn't write her own song she just sing, from the very first time she always said thas she want to be succesfull singer like MJ, like Whitney or like Barbra and there she is now a sucessful singer not succesful singer-song writer. All she have now is what she choose from the start, for me it's amazing to can achieve what u want to achieve from the start. She doesn't care if some people tell her she's not true artist because she doesn't write her own song because all she want to do is to sing. Personally it's hard to be what i want to be when so many peoeple tell me what should and what i shouldn't do, it's hard to be true to your self when so many people point out what they called a mistake, what they don't understand is that the path i've chose. I think compare Céline with any other artist it's a big mistake...because there's nothing to compare..as simple as that!!

In the case of Feist she has at least 10 years less in show business than Céline, vocal ranges are different, how many shows Céline has given, world tours, family, illness...etc.

Of course you are forgetting the fact that nobody in earth is the same person as 13 years ago...so, that's the mainly reason why Céline can't sing as she used to do it in 1995

Celine is the best female pop-artist on the planet. I know there are Mariah, Whitney etc., but Celine has something special.

It is a shame that she has this old-fashion Streisand-like image (Vegas and the marriage with Rene doesn't help either) and that the public rank her behind Whitney and Mariah (go to the ukmix-forum female artist poll 2013 (Celine #10, Whitney # 4 (I love Whitney, but her discography is boring; Mariah # 1(I love her, but only her early work)). I think it is Celine and Sony fault, that she has this old-Lady image since 1992 in her english career. In her french career, she always get more credit for her work:
