sfbaysinger Posted May 2, 2011 at 02:58 PM Posted May 2, 2011 at 02:58 PM Well I said I'd never do this again after the last fiasco...but here i am again. I even searched the board this time to see if I could find this already existing, but since I haven't, I'm going for it anyway. if this is already a topic, go ahead and remove this, mods, strike two for me.But until then...So one of the things I love most about Celine is how she holds a hig and long note until what seems like infinity and beyond. I do not know how she does it, but damn if she doesn't.So I wanted to find out what are some of our favorites she holds. I will get us started, and this does include also live performances and not her songs. I Knew I Loved You, the long note in the middle and the somewhat high note in the instrumentalI Want you To Need Me, the one at the end of the refrainThe First Time Ever I Saw your Face, the final kill LOL Then You Look At Me, there are a few thereTo Love You More, should be self-explanatoryI surrender So anyway, I could go on and on but now it's your turn... When I'm on the phone with my BF, hopefully forever, I actually have to stop talking and fully listen to the long and high big note she hits because to this day, it still takes my breath away. Seita, you came up with some doozies, in a good way. Does anyone know where I can find the un-released Would I Know that she sings online so I can hear this long note that warranted it being in the list you made? You really did mention some good ones i'd forgotten and some I was hoping would make it in here. Tyler1991 Posted May 3, 2011 at 02:45 AM Posted May 3, 2011 at 02:45 AM No problem. Yes, that is the traditional ending she has been doing for most of her All By Myself performances in Vegas. From the bootlegs we have, she did two the way she did in the Taking Chances World Tour, and then she did two a completely different way (link below), and then she did the rest in this way. Personally, I loved the ending in the FIY tour, it had so much power. It had that umph, but in the TCWT and now, she doesn't have that umph, so when she does the traditional C#5 ending, it just seems so dull....raising it up to Eb5 for the first second or two really adds back that umph. A lot of people really seeem to love this one, and it's okay, but to me it sounds like she didn't know what the hell to do and just started screaming. It's higher, an F#5, but it's hardly a belt. That Eb5 is strong, but this F#5 is an uneven mix resonated in the head. It doesn't have that strong sound, it's thin and lacks color. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eQ3zHTuGifI...feature=related Now compare that F#5 to this.....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rh4ZD7-I7IQ @ 3:41 This is clearly a chest belt, it's strong, it does sound like there may be some strain here (hard to tell with the quality), but you can clearly tell the difference between these two F#5's. The ABM one is thin and an uneven head mix, while this is in full chest. One last F#5: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pyDgOgNmCPY To me, her peak is without a doubt in the early 90's. 90-95 > 96-99 It is difficult to tell, especially when looking at the years after 1999. After 1999, her voice continued to get weaker in the ways it did as the 90's went on, but it also got stronger as well. However, in 2011, she has the power she did in 1995, and she has the improvements her voice has gained in the 2000's as well, so that's why I believe her voice today is very close to her peak. When comparing a year like 1997 to 1992, her voice did not gain anything. She did not gain the ability to reach lower notes than ever before (HYEBIL in 2003), or the ability to go higher in head voice (this has stayed pretty consistent, it's just that she does it more often in certain era's), or the ability to belt higher (like she did once she started mixing in 2003). The difference in her voice from 1997 to 1992 is that she got weaker and began to strain more. A lot of her best notes, with the best technique, with the least strain, and the most resonance, is from the earlier 90's. In 1997, she would strain in Natural Woman. In almost all of her ABM performances, she strained. Actually, the one with the least amount of strain is from the lone occasion that she did sing it live in 2008...Her RDMH performances lacked that power that she had in Paris, or on Letterman. The belts in Seduces Me sounded so thin compared to the studio version. Many of the MHWGO belts sounded "off" (though some were very good). As a whole, FIY/LTAL had some amazing vocals in there tours and promo's, but it wasn't consistent. She lacked the consistency she had in the earlier 90's to hit a note spot on. The massive amount of footage we have here as compared to earlier tours really skews people into thinking she was so much better, because there is so much more high notes...but if we had ALL the footage from the Celine Dion tour, or TCOML tour, people would be changing their minds quickly! Tyler1991 Posted May 3, 2011 at 03:02 AM Posted May 3, 2011 at 03:02 AM Ugh, watching the videos from the beginning of the TCWT always remind me of how much that tour really took a huge toll on her voice. I'm glad she has worked on it since then! I think one important thing to look at though is that part of the reason why she was so much better in the earlier part of the tour was because the songs were new. She went straight from Vegas to this tour, with 2 months in between, and a lot of that time was spent rehearsing, so she didn't exactly have a time to rest her voice. But between the show before Boston, and the Boston show, she had a month? Is that right? So she should have been fine! It seems as if when Celine performs a new song, or a song for the first time, she performs it the proper way. Then as she performs it, she finds ways to "take shortcuts" and simplify the song. One example is Love Can Move Mountains. In 1992 and 1993, she performed it properly. She sang all the F5's in there, which were quite a bit. Since 1994, she has removed all of the F5's and now just talks her way through the entire mess of a performance. There is no doubt she could still do the F5's, but she has become so accustomed to doing it that she just finds a newer, more simple way. I have no doubt she could have hit the F5 in Man's World for the DVD like she did in Africa, instead of doing the mixed G5. And actually, she did do it, it was the only time after Asia she did it again, but she did it once in Boston. Unfortunately, they chose the Montreal "Everything they can" which was the worst of the four shows. Same with the Alone F5, which was changed to a mixed G5. She continued doing strong F5's in Fade Away and River Deep, so she could have in Alone. I strongly feel that a lot of it is not so much that her voice has taken a toll, but just that she chooses to simplify things. Here is another example. Compare.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HSiQmyB5l20 @ :23-:41 to @ 3:14-29 Notice how in the first one she sings the high notes with a backing track, and she sounds on par with it. Yet in the second, she sounds flat and so much lower thant he backing. It sounds congested, as if there are multiple voices being projected (which there are), but in the first it's so close you can barely tell. There is no doubt she can do the E5's, she just chooses not to. Strangely enough, that first performance is 1994, yet in the two tour performances we have from 1991, she performed them more similarly to the 1999 performance. However, the key trend though, has been that she has made her songs easier, not harder, throughout her career. Quote

It's not really recommendable for a singer to hit high notes if the singer has to sing like almost everyday cos you will lose your voice for a few days or weeks, etc. Celine is careful that she won't lose her voice because those who bought her tickets will really feel bad or even get mad. So during her tour, i'd understand if her songs are being played in lower keys and maybe sometimes Celine would just lipsynch. I can't even sing like 12 songs with high notes in one sitting. I mean imight but i don't think i could hit all the notes perfectly, especially the high notes. Quote
Tyler1991 Posted May 3, 2011 at 04:01 AM Posted May 3, 2011 at 04:01 AM But this isn't about lip syncing, or even lowering keys. It's about her finding an easier way to perform a song....LCMM has never been lipped on tour, nor has it been lowered. The easier way is simply her not doing the note. Compare 5:43-5:49 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AcCWK3csyH4 to2:03-2:13 She completely bypassed the high note by doing that annoying noise. Nothing was lowered. Additionally, the Unison clip was not in a lower key as compared to the other performances, it was just her not putting effort into the higher notes. And in some cases, it's even a higher key. She raised Man's World and Alone from sustained chest F5's, to a slight G5 mix, which is easier. Quote
