I'm so glad ABM is still just as good as it was when the show started. She sings it far better in Vegas than she did in the TCWT. She actually sings the verses softly, and the choruses are less nasal and better pronounced. And the ending is spectacular!

It would be more spectacular if she managed to do it just like she did in 1996-1998, you know, without breathing before the final sentence.

I could care less if she does that break, considering she goes up on the end to an Eb5, rather than ending with just a C#5. I like that she goes up to that before coming down. In the 90's, on that ending note, she put a lot of UMPH into that note, and it sounded great. When I say umph, I mean like the grunt you hear in the no's in Think Twice.....but in the TCWT, the ending note had no umph. Now, not only does it have umph again, but I believe that ending note now sounds better than the 90's. She goes higher, the note itself sounds better, she sustains it longer.

 

And also, she holds the ending note here much longer than n the FIY tour. In the FIY tour she would literally only hold it for 5 seconds at some shows, and maybe 7-8 at a couple others. The only time she ever held it as long as she is holding it now is one time on the LTAL tour, but it was a pretty crappy note with no umph at all. So I think if she didn't take that breath, the ending note would be much shorter.

 

Additionally, the note she achieves in the ending is the same as the lipped note....so if we're talking about what would be amazing, it would be for her to actually sing the whole damn song. Her ending Eb5's have all been fantastic, except one or two from earlier in the show where she cracked a bit, but she is perfectly capable of doing it.

 

And lastly, aside from the final note which is miles better than the 90's, I'd say the overall ending is a bit boring. From the time she ends the final note, to the ending, she is only singing about half of the time. The other half is just the loud orchestra, lol. In the 90's (particularly on the FIY tour and MOST but not all of her promo) she literally sang the whole last minute and didn't stop for a single breath hardly. That particular arrangement was so much more powerful and suspenseful and just all around jawdropping.

IMO her ABM performances of from the South Africa leg of the TC Tour were vocally better than her ABM performances in Vegas.

I totally understand her leaving a pause if she's going to hit an Eb5, but in the US leg of TCWT she took this pause just to hit the C#5. If you watch the LTAL/early TCWT performances, it was much better, as she takes a quicker breath and is able to continue the "by myself anymore..." without leaving any gap in the middle (if you weren't looking closely at the video you wouldn't know). As for FIY, she had a lot of stamina then and did the whole thing in one breath, but like you said, the final note was usually shorter. Personally I think it sounded a lot better when that whole final phrase is sung as one part, not two. But with the high & long endings we have now in Vegas it really doesn't matter cos she sounds amazing!

I agree, SA & some Asian performances were fantastic, better than Vegas. After this things became more and more nasal...

Yeah, her voice in some of the Africa performance of TCWT are her best vocals EVER. Certainly better than crappy #ss 1997 that everyone creams there jeans over, which IMO is EXTREMELY overrated. Hell, I'd say some of her early TCWT vocals are even better than 90-95 which I consider to be her prime.

 

The F#5 (F5 in some) she hit in It's A Man's World on the "everything" belt before she changed it. OMG, that was amazing!!

 

The F5 she would hit in Alone before changing it! AMAZING as well!

 

The Eb5 she actually sang live in All By Myself in the opening show - her best high note of that song, it's a shame it was the last time she sang it live!

 

The Think Twice performances...certainly the highlight of the entire tour, but I feel they could have been a little better.

 

And Fade Away from (the 16th I believe) was 340843088034 times better than the DVD version. She REEEEALLY went for it on the ending and belted like crazy!

 

She had so many amazing F5 and F#5's early in the tour.

The ABM live clip from the opening show isn't on YouTube anymore after I deleted my account a few months ago. I have it somewhere on my computer though. It wasn't the best quality clip but you could still tell it was amazing. It was much less forced or strained than the 90's. It was honestly maybe less powerful, but a smoother and more clearer note. It wasn't like it was crap and that's why it became playback. It's kinda strange as good as it was.
