Bellamy Posted February 2, 2006 at 09:59 AM Author Posted February 2, 2006 at 09:59 AM Oprah adventureFebruary 01, 2006 By Melanie Béchard Nikki Wiedenhoeft and I have been friends for about two years—ever since I wrote a story for the Times about her trip to Las Vegas after she had won tickets to see Céline Dion perform at Caesar’s Palace. It was a great interview. She invited me into her home, which she shares with husband, Chris, and their three children—Nicholas, Callahan, and Christian. We talked for several hours about the concert, and how moved she was to get a hug from the über-famous French-Canadian singer. What struck me most about Nikki was her enthusiasm for life and her honesty. She moved me to tears—and I’m not even a Dion fan. Who would have thought that lightning would strike twice? Earlier this month, Nikki got tickets to a taping of Oprah Winfrey’s talk show, “Oprah,” in Chicago. And once again, she got a hug. The story began on Jan. 11 when she decided—after years of watching—to try to get tickets of her own. “Ninety-nine percent of reservations are done on the phone lines,” she explained, but noted the line often is busy. “People try that number for years.” The only other way to get tickets is to monitor the Oprah website, where they sometimes offer last-minute e-mail reservations. These tickets usually are for the next day’s taping, and are intended for people living in the Chicago area. But that didn’t stop Nikki. She fired off not one but four e-mails, explaining to the staff why she wanted the tickets. “I thought, ‘I can’t just send one e-mail. How do I stand out from these hundreds of people?’” she said. “So I told them I don’t just want to ask my husband how his day was when he comes home from work. “I want to tackle him and tell him we’re going to see Oprah!” She even told them they would be willing to drive the 700 miles to Chicago overnight to be there for the next day’s taping. The plan worked. That same day, just minutes before 5 p.m. when Harpo Studios in Chicago closes, Nikki got the call. A woman named Shevonne told her she could have two tickets to the show—and even arranged for her to come to a taping a week later so they would not have to drive the 700 miles overnight. The studio had received more than 800 e-mails for tickets that day. In her excitement, she called Chris at work to tell him the news. “He couldn’t understand a word I was saying,” she laughed. Chris admitted he was “not exactly” an Oprah fan, but that he was pleased to go if it made his wife happy. “I knew it was something she wanted to do,” he said. The topic of the show would be a surprise, she added. Nikki e-mailed me the next day. “Quite honestly, I do not care what the topic is, I am ONE VERY HAPPY AND THANKFUL WOMAN STILL SHOUTING WHOOOOOO HOOOOOOO!!!!!” she wrote. She also told her brother, Shane Armstrong, who congratulated her, saying it was his wife, Bobbi’s, dream to get Oprah tickets. Nikki considered giving her tickets to her brother and sister-in-law as a gift, but first decided to try and get two more tickets so they could come along. “So I called back and asked for four seats, and got it,” she said, incredulous. The foursome set off for Chicago on Jan. 17, with Nikki and Bobbi in the backseat watching Oprah’s 20th anniversary edition DVD. The next day, they showed up at Harpo Studios at 10 a.m. “Unfortunately, they search you at the door and seize all your cameras, videos, etc. so we don’t have any shots of the Big ‘O’ to share,” she said. After the screening, some 250-300 audience members waited in a holding room for nearly three hours before they were taken in groups to the set. The couples thought they would be sitting together, but soon were split up by the handlers who picked each audience member’s seat. “We were really surprised at how organized and controlled the whole show was, even the audience,” Nikki said. “The producers and staff rearranged people several times before the show began, making sure they had a good balance of colours, ethnic groups, etc. “A girl came up to me and said that I would be sitting over in the seat beside Bobbi, and when I asked her if our husbands could come, too, she assured me they would be just fine where they were.” Eventually, Bobbi was moved to a seat in the front row beside some of the guests, and Nikki was left sitting near the doorway where Oprah makes her entrance. Their husbands were seated together somewhere near the back. “Finally the moment came. . . . The music started and when we stood up, we could see her about 10 feet behind us start to walk in and everyone screamed and applauded and then we reached out our hands and connected with Oprah. “Wow! I have seen women do that all the time on TV, but when it was my turn, it was unbelievable! She has very soft hands,” she said. “My first impression was that she was beautiful, a lot smaller [than I expected], and she looked like a doll,” Nikki added. “She is an amazingly attractive woman in person and she has this aura around her that creates a type of magic in the room.” The topic of the show was “Faces behind big names,” and the guests included clothing designer Marc Jacobs, puppeteer Kevin Clash (who does the voice and movements for “Elmo” on Sesame Street), the family behind Crayola crayons, and the daughter of “Barbie” inventor Ruth Handler (whose name is Barbara). It took about three hours to tape the one-hour show, and the whole production was very professional. “I was pretty impressed with how they didn’t have any retakes. Everything was really smooth,” Chris noted. “She was cued a few times by cameramen, but it was always evident that Oprah was in charge,” Nikki said. “Between takes, she would talk to all of us like we were having lunch, so casually. “She laughed, made jokes, she even used swear words.” The talk show host also thanked the audience members for taking the time and sometimes travelling long distances to be at her show. Nikki was suffering from a bad cough at the time, and said she sometimes struggled to suppress it out of fear they would kick her out of the studio. It was difficult to know when the cameras were on the audience, she said, expect for one particular moment. “A couple of times, the big intimidating cameraman had his camera inches from my face and it felt like he was looking right up my nose,” she said. “I’m thinking, ‘Do you not have a zoom on that?’” Nikki said she’s not sure if she or her family will appear in the final edited version of the show, but she hopes so—for one special reason. Her four-year-old daughter, Callahan, had bought her a silver necklace with a heart pendant before she left and asked her mother to wear it on the Oprah show. Now Callahan is hoping to see the gift on television. As the taping was wrapping up, Oprah started to leave the set by the same way she came in. “When she walked toward me, I couldn’t help but reach out my arms and when I called her name, she said, ‘What do ya want, honey?’” Nikki recalled, adding she asked for a hug. “Before I knew it, I was embracing Oprah. I couldn’t believe how cuddly she was. Times seemed to stand still while I had my arms wrapped around a woman who is such a huge inspiration to our entire world. “A woman who is such a legend, such a humanitarian, such a figure of love, hope, and peace. It really felt magical. “She was real. Really real,” Nikki added. Oprah then shook a few more hands and left, escorted by two bodyguards. The next day, the foursome drove back to Fort Frances. It is likely the show will air sometime next week. “It was an awesome adventure,” Nikki said.Source: http://www.fftimes.com/index.php/6/2006-02-01/24328 When she met Celine? Elaine Posted November 20, 2007 at 11:06 PM Posted November 20, 2007 at 11:06 PM Well, Céline's new version of TAST is not exactly new, right? I don't know much about Grosban, but I'm guessing he has new stuff, so I'd say it's perfect natural that she has chosen him rather than Céline. Quote http://img807.imageshack.us/img807/1352/opo3.jpg
