Paris Hermès closes door to Oprah – Oprah closes the door on Hermès

 

When Oprah Winfrey was in Paris last week, she stopped by the Hermès store to pick up a watch for Tina Turner, who she was having dinner with that evening.

 

She arrived at the store just after 6:30pm and was turned away by the sales clerk and then the store manager.  She politely asked them if she could just dash in since she knew exactly what she wanted.  There were still shoppers in the store at the time.

 

It was reported that Hermès staff turned Oprah away because they didn’t recognize her without her makeup and because they have been “having a problem with North Africans lately.”  Oprah’s friends say the story is not true.

 

“They knew exactly who she was,” a friend told the New York Daily News.  “They specifically said, 'We know who you are.  If it had been Celine Dion or Britney Spears or Barbra Streisand, there is no way they would not be let in that store.”

 

Oprah is a long-standing customer of Hermès and recently ordered a dozen of the much wanted Birkin bags, which can cost $6,500 each. 

 

After the incident in Paris, she canceled the order.

 

It’s also reported that she called Robert Chaves, president of Hermès America, to inform him she will no longer be shopping there.  She may also share her story with her 22 million-plus viewers.

hahaha it doesn't work like that and she asked politely , it said on the article. I wasn't there I cannot say anything. But a client is always a client and it's a store.

and you know, I really don't understand why those shops close so early in Euro, and open so late. shops in Euro really open for too short daily, and they even rest at weekend. all shops open for at least 12 hours x 7 days in China.

French Luxury Store Apologizes to Oprah

 

PARIS - The luxury store Hermes has apologized to Oprah Winfrey for turning her away from one of its Paris boutiques last week, saying it was closed for a public relations event when she came knocking.

 

The talk-show host and "an entourage" unsuccessfully tried to enter an Hermes boutique on Paris' posh Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honore at 6:45 p.m. on June 14, Hermes said in a statement.

 

"People were in the store and they were shopping. Oprah was at the door and she was not allowed into the store," Gayle King, a friend of Winfrey who witnessed the incident, told syndicated TV show "Entertainment Tonight." "Oprah describes it herself as `one of the most humiliating moments of her life.'"

 

King said it's unlikely that Winfrey will shop there again. "She's really OK. Her position is, `I will shop where people appreciate my business, and I don't believe that any longer includes Hermes,'" King said.

 

The store's normal closing time is 6:30 p.m., although high-end shops are known to make exceptions for celebrities. On that particular night, however, "a private public relations event was being prepared inside," the statement from Hermes said.

 

"Hermes regrets not having been able to welcome Madame Oprah Winfrey and the people accompanying her to give them all the attention and service that Hermes is committed to giving each of its clients in the world," said the statement, released Tuesday. "Hermes expresses its sincere regrets for any misunderstanding that these circumstances could have caused."

 

A spokeswoman for Winfrey's Chicago-based Harpo Productions told The Associated Press Thursday the talk-show host plans to discuss her "Crash" moment when "The Oprah Winfrey Show" returns to the air in September.

 

"Crash" is a film dealing with race relations.

Hermes Apologizes for Oprah Snub

 

    Oprah Winfrey may be the world's most powerful celebrity, as well as the reigning Queen of Daytime, but apparently those titles hold little sway with Herms.

 

The luxury goods retailer has issued a red-faced apology after refusing the talk-show host entry to one of its Paris boutiques last week.

 

 

According to a statement from Herms, Winfrey and "an entourage" tried to enter the Herms boutique on the Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honore at about 6:45 p.m. on June 14.

 

 

Though the store's normal closing time is 6:30 p.m., many high-end retailers routinely make exceptions for celebrities and other VIPs. However, according to Herms, the boutique was in the midst of setting up "a private public relations event" at the time Winfrey stopped by.

 

 

"Herms regrets not having been able to welcome Madame Oprah Winfrey and the people accompanying her to give them all the attention and service that Hermes is committed to giving each of its clients in the world," said the statement. "Herms expresses its sincere regrets for any misunderstanding that these circumstances could have caused."

 

 

However, Gayle King, a pal of Winfrey's, who was with her at the time of the incident, disputes Herms' version of events.

Not that Winfrey is letting the incident keep her down.

Winfrey's Chicago-based Harpo Productions confirmed that the daytime diva canceled a recent order for one of Herms' Birkin bags following the incident. The exclusive purses can cost as much as $6,500 and Winfrey reportedly already owns a dozen of them.

 

 

Winfrey also informed Robert Chavez, the American president of Herms, that she would no longer be patronizing his stores.

 

 

Meanwhile, though The Oprah Winfrey Show is currently on hiatus, a spokesperson for the show confirmed that Winfrey plans to devote a show to her "Crash moment" in September.

 

 

Crash, which stars    Don Cheadle and is currently in theaters, paints a bleak picture of racial intolerance.

 

 

Last week, Winfrey was named number one on Forbes magazine's Celebrity 100, up from her 2004 standing of number three. Her 12-month earnings were estimated at a hefty $225 million.

 

 

And that would buy a lot of bags. Too bad, Herms.

That was really rude. This is the 21st century and people still act like this.

Well, no we don't know the version of events, but a store is a store, it has its regulations, it has its closing times, and the people who work there also have a life, places to go, homes to return to. That is why a store has designated HOURS. If they let one more person in, they'd have to let everyone in to be fair and they need to draw the line, and nobody is too important to cross that line. The people finishing up their shopping have a right to finish, but Oprah (the ego) seemed to come too late and wanted special treatment. The exact same thing has happened to me and I wasn't let in, and I respected that. Oprah is acting like a spoiled child from the sounds of it. I think she needs the humility every once and awhile. (How many people did I just tick off?)

 

And I believe they were trying to say, "even if it were Celine, Britney, or Barbra, we still wouldn't let you in." In Paris, translating that into English would sound like a double negative, hence, 'there's no way we would not let you in.' So, the person was translating from French to English and it ended up sounding wrong. Let's not make this a racial incident, like everything else.

yeah, this sounds very logical. I can't believe they refuse Oprah while accept Celine, Britney, or Barbra. I guess it's the fault of Oprah's translator.

More than once I got to a store, and even a bank and asit was closed with people inside and I asked go get in, very polite and I was never denied.

It's not just because she is Oprah, could be anyone else. It wouldn't be that bad to open the door. She also spends a lot of money there, she seems to be a good costumer, it would be nice and polite to open the door for her.

Well I certainly know where I work when we're closed that's it.... and whoever is finishing getting their stuff is often still in the store after we lock the door, and when they leave we un-lock the door for them, but we tell all people coming in that we're closed
