Why is LTAL often said to be too "samey" or "boring"?

I know a lot of Celine fans that don't really ever play this album and say it's one of her worst records, but I don't quite understand why. I know that the album was put together incredibly quickly because they needed an album to coincide with My Heart Will Go On's release, but even so, it's a lovely collection of songs and it did actually have a fair amount of variety in my opinion.

If they had left off "Why Oh Why", "Amar Haciendo El Amor" (from international releases) and "Treat Her Like A Lady" and included "Be The Man" and "To Love You More" on every edition then I think it would have felt a lot stronger and a bit smoother. I know "To Love You More" was already included on previous albums but it just fits the album's overall sound and theme so well.

I think Us, Miles To Go (Before I Sleep), When I Need You, Where Is The Love, Tell Him, Love Is On The Way, Immortality, The Reason, MHWGO, I Hate You Then I Love You, To Love You More and Let's Talk About Love are all brilliant.

She uses her voice differently.... there are no anymooooooooooore notes. Celine is a huge belter, but the album wasn't much of a belt album. Like TC, a lot of her high notes are head, rather than chest.
Posted

Yes, but that fitted the album's theme. It's supposed to sound more delicate and pretty.

...and isn't "Us" quite a "belty" song?

Posted

In terms of chest notes, yeah...but there weren't any 10 second notes in the 5th octave..... An 8 second C5 in Immortality....

MHWGO had two Eb5s (nothing/forever notes)

THLAL had good chest notes

When I Need You had amazing head notes

The Reason had good notes...

Tell Him had great notes

Just A Little Bit Of Love had a great high note in the beginning

And this is just a few....a lot of the songs had great notes, but it was more subtle.... different tempos. The high notes in these songs weren't exactly the climatic part of the song as is the case in ABM, I Surrender, etc...

Posted

Hmm...maybe she should have included "Is Nothing Sacred Anymore"? That's definitely more of what you're after.

What do you think of "Falling Into You" then? I'm sure she doesn't belt a lot more in that record than she does in this.

Because it's very same-y and her most ballad centric album. Much too adult contemporary.

Yeah I agree. That album wasent really supposed to be a very "Belty" album. I think the songs on that album are great, they are just meant to sound different. Its actually one of my favorite albums. I do love to hear her belt out those notes though

LTAL as an album boring...who says that....? are they deaf? sorry what did you say...I SAID ARE THEY DEAF :whistling:

in my opinion this album is great i love all the songs and i think people are forgetting THE REASON she belted some good notes out on that.....or am i the only one hearing it????? as well as on US that was a belting out song to in my opinion just not on the same scale as ALL BY MYSELF. this album to me marked Celine maturing.......thats how it has always felt to me and always will. I think it was the first time Celines sound had evolved into something different and the album was more to be about love where as all celines other tracks on albums were about pain and breaking up, this album was about all aspects of love, also this album was highlighted as celines vocals being in the most tip top condition as well. on my top ten on my ipod killer list there are 7 tracks from the LTAL album in there the top four being

1 US

2 Miles to Go

3 The Reason

4 Where Is The Love

so not all fans hate this album i for one dont, i think im the fan who dosent like A New Day Has Come that much to me that is celines worst album along with One Heart....although there are some good tracks on them. hahahahahahahahaha

i love this album except maybe Treat her like a lady and I hate you than i love you
Thanks Celine for the great memories. I will never forget you

I love LTAL album. Never found anything wrong with it. I do like when she does the high notes/long notes.

That album is very boring. I never listen to it. I wonder how it sold that much? For me, her best album is A New Day!
Posted
Isn't this one of her highest selling CDs? I don't think it's boring at all. I think it has quite a variety of songs...there are a couple I'm not too crazy about, but that's the case with just about every CD I own.

Let's Talk About Love is one of my favorite albums. I love every song except "I Hate You Then I Love You" (I respect it, just not my cup of tea). The album definitely has some of my favorite Celine songs on it. I have always loved "Love Is On The Way" and "Us" especially.

LTAL boring and samey? I think it's the opposite- The Reason, Just A Little Bit Of Love, Why Oh Why, I Hate You Then I Love You, Miles To Go...these songs are all totally different from each other- I love the album so much. Us is one of the most passionate songs she's sang- the footage of her recording this is immense

LTAL is definitely my favourite album!!! I love how she sings the songs, with much more emotion than in FIY. And it is her best selling album, with 31,000,000 copies sold in the world!

I love LTAL it is one of her best albums and i can't see any wrong with it she works with the greatest musicians/producers on it..

David Foster' Walter Afanasieff' Ric Wake' to name a few and sings with Bee Gees' Barbra Streisand' Luciano Pavarotti...

I mean she reaches some incredible head notes like F#6 (When I Need You)

and the belting is there too' but diffirent not like All By Myself.

I Love LTAL! I think it's a great album. Can't understand how anyone could find it boring  The songs are wonderful (L)

Rushed and inconsistent are the two words that come to my mind when I think about this album. No one's denying that this doesn't have standout tracks like Immortality (one of her best english songs IMO), Us (a fav of mine), The Reason, Just A Little Bit Of Love (wasted single material) and of course, the title track. The problem that this record had was that the songs just didn't gel together. She tried a lot of different things but somehow something went wrong and isn't as memorable as FIY (to which it will always be compared to just cos Sony decided to promote it as FIY Part II). A few songs here and there and maybe it could have fit in well. The duets are very underwhelming (with the exception of Immortality) and the rest of the songs just seem to be album fillers. Also, to a great extent, the album does seem corny (which is coming from a Celine fan so something sure went wrong). I don't think anyone would be able to pin-point what exactly was wrong but everyone has their theories why this failed to create much buzz and liking amongst her fans. Yes, the sales are there but let us be honest here, this album sold riding on the waves of the success of MHWGO. Nothing less and nothing more.

Anyways, it was just my opinion. But slaughter me now

Aww, no one is going to slaughter you! I actually agree with your post to some extent. The album was made for, and a success because of, My Heart Will Go On. That's undeniable. However, I still reckon it would have sold between 10-20 million without the movie theme due to sheer hype and the massive fanbase she had developed up until that point.

However, I wouldn't say "Tell Him" was underwhelming for me. In my opinion, without Why Oh Why and Treat Her Like A Lady the whole album would have been so much more consistent, so much more solid and so much smoother. The tracks, as you say, don't blend together or gel together that well. Whereas, on FIY, despite the variety of sounds and genres being even larger, the album had this overall punch and energy that ran straight throughout the album. Every song carried this strong sense of power and purpose.

some of her song in this album are amazing but the other are...

i like a lot of songs on this album, of course mhwgo, but I had that one on a singlecd too at that time.

The reason is a nice song, I like it. Immortality sounds great too, just a little bit of love is not my favorite.

And to me the duet with Luciano is corny and cheesy.. I am sure I heard that melody somewhere before, long before i heard this song.

But as the title says.. I hate it haha But there are also some great great songs, like us which is really amazing to me, and we have where is the love which sounds magical to me, esspecially when the instrumental parts starts in the beginning..that sounds soo nice.

Tell him is a great duet. Amar Haciendo Del Amor, well can live with it, but could be without it too. Treat her like a lady is a nice uptempo song.

When I need you, is too cheesy too I think, don't like the arrangement in that song.

Let's talk about love starts nice but in the end Celine screams too much in my opinion, it could have sound better without that screaming part in the end. Although I liked the performances of most of the songs in the LTAL tour dvd ( au coeur du stade)

Well I've always considered Let's Talk About Love as my favourite album from Céline! That's also because it was my very first Céline-album, but I do still think it's the best she's had. I would never call it boring, (most) of the songs are amazing! The Reason, Miles To Go and Where Is The Love  (my two personal favourites), My Heart Will Go On and Let's Talk About Love obviously, Treat Her Like A Lady, Tell Him, Immortality, Us... When I was younger I didn't care much for Amar haciendo el amor, Why Oh Why and Just A Little Bit Of Love but nowadays I love all the songs of the album. :)

And I actually thought Let's Talk About Love would be the most "common" favourite among the fans too.. didn't even have any idea that it has been called boring..??

Well, I wouldn't call it a boring album. However, I don't think it's one of her strongest albums, either. I believe that it was indeed rushed for it to be released in a "timely fashion" for MHWGO and the whole Titanic craze. That said, the album did reach #1 in nearly every territory it was released, and sold over 30 million copies worldwide. So, some people must have liked it. ;) Also, I believe most of the criticism that the album has received has come from the recent past, with a backlash of sorts against the whole "balladry nature" of the album, and it's connection with Titanic, and of course MHWGO. Overall, I think it was a well-crafted album, considering the time contraint.

Everything is BIG about LTAL. It´s clear that they were trying to fullfill the worldwide Celine demand after FIY and they put a lot of songs together even when as a whole they make a slightly boring album. On the other hand (with the exception of 4-5 fillers) I find the songs are individually amazing. BTW: They should have included Where Is The Love in all the editions, still one of my favorites from the album.

that's cos that song is a cover :P :P

I don't think LTAL is boring! I do agree that the album isn't very consistant, with perhaps too much different styles, but like I said in the Why oh Why thread... I don't think this is a bad album! I recently played this album a lot, and I forgot how many awesome songs are on it!

My favs are:

The Reason

Why Oh Why

Amar Haciendo El Amor

Miles To Go (Before I Sleep)

Us

Just A Little Bit Of Love

Where Is The Love

Let's Talk About Love

I used to like Be The Man a lot, but it isn't ranking high on my list anymore... and it's a shame they never promoted Us and Just A Little Bit Of Love -_-

btw... was this album really created around MHWGO? I thought it was released quite soon after FIY because of the high demand on Céline songs back in the day! I mean they even could have prolounged the succes of FIY if they released Seduces Me as the last single...

I think LTAL is an amazing album. It doesn't have as many 'hit' songs as FIY is filled with, and there are probably too many different styles in it, but it's certainly one of my favourites. I too had no idea it was made quickly to go with MHWGO - it can't of been that rushed with all those duets they arranged though... :hmm:

That album is very boring. I never listen to it. I wonder how it sold that much? For me, her best album is A New Day!

  You mean the Live in Las Vegas CD? That was the worst release in her entire career!
