buffster2002 Posted February 15, 2010 at 11:34 PM Posted February 15, 2010 at 11:34 PM Hi guys, I don't often post on here but visit all the time, and I'm obviously a huge Celine fan. I was just curious, a lot of the time when there's discussions about tours, songs, etc, many people seem to not like MHWGO or find it irritating that she is always performing it/that it is the defining song of her career. I just wanted to know why, becuase personally it is my favurite song by Celine, and has so many beautiful memories attached to it and to her performing it. For me it was the highlight of the AND show and I was glad she did it as the final song in the TC tour. Anyway I'm just curious. Thanks. Quote "Every night in my dreams, I see you, I feel you. browseceline Posted February 15, 2010 at 11:43 PM Posted February 15, 2010 at 11:43 PM my heart will go on is definately the song that means much to me. It has beeing played like forever in Celine's 90s glorydays on the radio and in the end some people could not stand the song anymore. To me it never bores! And indeed, as the end of the tour it totally worked for me, with the beautiful chandeliers and the soft spotlights in the stadium. And it is one of the signaturesongs of Celine. When an artist has an signaturesong it can be a blessing or not. With my heart will go on Celine got the stamp - Titanicqueen. And it is one of the songs that people immediately associate with Celine. No wonder, it was one of the biggest ballads she ever sung. But there also a lot of people in here who want her to get rid of that stamp. They want her to take new levels, reinvent. My heart will go on has been sung a lot of times, usually in the same way and that is what some people don't like ( the fans in here)They want her to take risks, reinvent the song, another arrangement. Not the same everytime again. To me the song is wonderful, it still gives me goosebumps when she goes to the encorepart.I love the pennywhistle in the beginning and I still prefer Celine singing it in the original key. 1 Quote <iframe width="640" height="390" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/hl2XkxnYljg" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Tyler1991 Posted February 15, 2010 at 11:47 PM Posted February 15, 2010 at 11:47 PM It's a shame her biggest song isn't her best song. I like MHWGO...but she is capable of so much more. It's basically molded her into "the singer who sings slow boring songs." Quote
J-Man Posted February 16, 2010 at 12:30 AM Posted February 16, 2010 at 12:30 AM MHWGO was a good song and if it had just been a big hit that would be great with me. But it became such a massive monster of a beast that it did threaten to (and possibly did) swallow Celine's whole career and all her previous (and future) accomplishments so that now when the vast majority of the world thinks of Celine Dion, they think of that song. I don't think her critical career has ever properly recovered from it. It has become her signature piece and there is never going to be any song that she will ever do that will now be more associated with her. While it is great for any artist to have such a piece, I just wish it hadn't been so huge. Now I'm so sick of having to end every concert with it and having so many people identify her by it when a song like IACBTMN would have been much more worthy of showing off the kind of performer Celine really is to me. I think a lot of hard core fans feel it would be great if she could drop it for a while from her shows for a while or at least not make such a curtain call out of it, as we could do with a break from it, but that ain't gonna happen and it also 12 years on seems unlikely that she is gong to do much to freshen it up, so yes, I do resent it a bit and kinda wish it had never happened. As John said, it's not about the song itself but for me it's just that I have heard it so many times over and over that it has lost it's magic and at a certain point it's getting on my nerves. I mean go deep into your thoughts and try to understand why its your favorite song. Are you fan of Celine since 1997 and after; did you realize how big she was after Titanic?? Sometimes you love a song just because it reached the #1 spot. and I think thats unconscious, but just b/c everybody around you loves it, you automaticaly love it too The song is beautiful, don't get me wrong, but lord there are much better songs than this. And i'm not against her performing this song, because it was her biggest hit ever. Some people would be willing to go see her concert only if she sang MHWGO in it (i know that cause thats how my sister went) She dislikes Celine, but loves MHWGO I am a exemple of that too: I think Whitney Houston is a great singer, but i would never go see her concert knowing she wouldn't perform "I will always love you", but i'm sure she has better songs than that, but i'm not really into her.... smw Posted February 16, 2010 at 01:23 AM Posted February 16, 2010 at 01:23 AM It's always interesting to see which song of a certain artist will be the biggest. I seem to remember reading somewhere that "Bootylicious" by Destiny's Child is the biggest song of Beyonce's career. And she has said that she wishes it would just "go away". I'm glad that Celine is still respectful of "My Heart Will Go On". I'm sure she would be happy to never perform that song again - because she has performed it so many times. But it's important for an artist to remember and be respectful of those stepping stones that put them at their status. And MHWGO certainly was Celine's biggest stepping stone. So, while I agree that she has many more songs that surpass MHWGO vocally, it's still a stunning song and put her at superstar status. I think that so many of us fans seem to grow tired of it is the fact that there are SO many other songs that have never seen the light of day from her repertoire! And we just want to hear her sing some of those too! But the general public would be so upset to not hear MHWGO at a Celine concert. So we can count on her singing that song for the duration of her career. But there's no reason to sing it on every public appearance she makes (Oprah, etc.) Quote
buffster2002 Posted February 16, 2010 at 02:07 AM Author Posted February 16, 2010 at 02:07 AM (edited) Maybe as someone who isn't as much of a "hardcore fan" of Celine (I'm not saying that in a negative way - I'm a hardcore J.Lo and Destiny's Child fan), I can objectively see the value of the song more. I mean, that song pushed Let's Talk About Love to sell over 30 million copies worldwide. I truly doubt it would have sold that much if it wasn't for MHWGO, and the fact that it basically led to Celine having TWO consecutive albums that sold over 30 million copies is astounding. Its just like Whitney with I Will Always Love You, or Mariah with Hero. Everyone has a signuature song, and I am so proud that MHWGO is one of the biggest songs EVER. But again, this is speaking from a non-hardcore fan perspective, so I appreciate the opinions and insights you guys have given me so far and hope to read more... Have you ever consider why MHWGO is your favorite song? I mean go deep into your thoughts and try to understand why its your favorite song. Are you fan of Celine since 1997 and after; did you realize how big she was after Titanic?? Sometimes you love a song just because it reached the #1 spot. and I think thats unconscious, but just b/c everybody around you loves it, you automaticaly love it too That is totally wrong in reference to me. I am definitely not the type of person who would listen to a song so many times just becuase "everyone else loves it". MHWGO (live from Las Vegas version) is the most played song on my iPod, why would I just do that becuase of everyone else? I have my own brian. I love the song becuase it has a beautiful arrangement, the vocals are FLAWLESS, and emotion and lyrics behind it is so intense, and the music is beautifully understated. It has also taken on greater meaning to me since last year, my 26 year old sister was tragically killed. So now I can relate to the song in a whole new level, becuase of the theme of the song and also the fact that we both travelled to Vegas together to see Celine in 2007. I totally agree with this statement. Another perfect example is Beyonce. She has NEVER done a concert without doing a Destiny's Child medley/song, becuase she is respectful to what it brought her and what it led to. You can make an experiment (as I always do ) ask some people...DO YOU KNOW CELINE DION? and I can ashure you that they would answer...AH YES...THE TITANIC HU? and that its what WE FANS haaaaaaaaaaaaate! BTW I love the song, but in my country was one of must played at radios, weddings, valentines, etc etc etc...and at that time, I recognize that I used to said..."agaaaaaaaaaaaaaain?????????? so I dont think its anti MHWGO,its anti-whydoesntthepeopleknowothercelinessong isnt it? whineupemily Posted February 16, 2010 at 03:55 AM Posted February 16, 2010 at 03:55 AM It's basically molded her into "the singer who sings slow boring songs."And it really is a huge shame that people can't look past that. Not saying it's true, but for everyone that's annoyed with "MHWGO", and say it's all she ever sings, blah blah blah. They really should make the effort to listen to some other music of hers. And realise of course she's not going to stop singing that song, because thanks to that song, it was a MAJOR stepping stone to the career she has. You can't just abandon something like that. And she's obviously passionate about the song, so screw what other people say. If she wants to sing it, SHE WILL! And it will be amazing. Or maybe not, but still. :sofunny: :sofunny: Quote

For me it was the highlight of the AND show and I was glad she did it as the final song in the TC tour. Anyway I'm just curious. Thanks. First of all, I'm a music lover, I'm not a fan of any artist. This can sound a bit strange since I flew to Montréal last year to see a performance and since I'll be flying to Vegas next year and since I'm involved together with multiple others in the organisation of the fan meeting there. But it's the truth, I do not consider myself as a fan of any artist on this planet. I like music, I'll correct myself, I "love" music, I'm always listening to music, It can be a disc of Céline but it can also be "Die Walküre" (The Valkyrie) from Richard Wagner or even a disc from a new singer/songwriter like Jill Hennessey (actress from Crossing Jordan). From Wagner, Schubert, Mozart, Verdi, etc... to U2, Evenescence, Live, etc... is only a small step, it's all music and it started all thousands or years ago. I've seen opera's performed in Vienna, I've seen Céline in Montréal, I've seen U2 in Dublin, etc... To say it with the words from John Miles who wrote the song "Music": Music was my first love; and it will be my last. Now, I'm one of those people who honestly "dislikes" (to be gentle) the song "My heart will go on". Mostly because I'm tired of hearing the song over and over again but also because I didn't like it back in the days when the song was released with the movie "Titanic". They played this song over and over again to a point that I started to change radiostations when I hear the song being performed. I am so tired of hearing this song that it grew to a point that I started disliking it (ok, I'll admit, I really hate the song, so that's said ). I do love 90% of Céline's songs with the other 9,9% that I can stand hearing them but that remaining 0,1% which include "My heart will go on" are songs that I really hate. I can give dozens of reasong why I hate the song but the most important ones are: Tired of hearing it, it's boring as hell and it sounds like sh*t... I do honestly hope that she leaves the song out of the new Vegas show, because that sole song will ruine my whole evening, but I'll guess I'll have to live with it that she'll remains performing it over and over again Edited February 16, 2010 at 10:08 AM by Bralo20 Quote ...
couldawouldashoulda Posted February 16, 2010 at 12:56 PM Posted February 16, 2010 at 12:56 PM I have been a fan of Celine since 1991 when I first heard her sing (It was a clip of Where Does My Heart Beat Now on either MTV or VH1, can't remember). After Beauty and the Beast, a friend of mine bought me her self-titled English album (the current one out at the time) and I was instantly hooked. I so enjoyed watching the country and then later, the world, become as enamored with Celine as I was. The film, Titanic, moved me and (due to certain circumstances of my life at the time) really hit home so that I was a sobbing mess at the end of it. Then, the credits roll and My Heart Will Go On played. It was just so perfect for that moment. I became incredibly attached to the song at that time and I still love it. I listen to that song probably once a week at least (I pretty much only listen to Celine these days so I might hear the song more often than that). I don't think I will ever tire of it. Also, I don't find a "slow boring song". It is a ballad. Ballads are slow. I know some people only like to hear music with a beat to which they can dance. I will never understand that just as some people don't understand while people want to listen to "slow, boring songs". Just because a song is slow that it doesn't mean it's boring. Maybe YOU find songs that are slow to be boring but not everyone does. Oh and P.S. I freakin LOVE Love Can Move Mountains and completely understand why it has been in every tour she has done she recorded the song. It's quite simply one of her best. The message in the song could be a summary of the message Celine seems to want to give to the world. And I look forward to the moment in the show where she will say "Come on. Every one up and dancing with me!" (or something similar in broken English) and the entire crowd gets up and for roughly 4 1/2 minutes, I'm in the presence of several thousand people all feeling the faith, love and trust that Celine extends to us all. J-Man Posted February 16, 2010 at 01:02 PM Posted February 16, 2010 at 01:02 PM That's the difference between LCMM and MHWGO, I don't look forward to MHWGO but God I would not be happy to have LCMM removed from a tour. It's like a lovely in-joke with the fans (not meant that way I know - it's a superstition thing at this stage) It's not a Celine show if she doesn't do that one, and it's a get up and dance song and I love them! Sofie Posted February 16, 2010 at 01:41 PM Posted February 16, 2010 at 01:41 PM I know, it's so weird! That's the song she's known for singing, and as you said, the highlight of AND. I think that MHWGO is the "moment" when you see her live ( I haven't, it just seems that way) Quote
davidjag79 Posted February 16, 2010 at 03:22 PM Posted February 16, 2010 at 03:22 PM I absolutely love MHWGO and it made a huge effect on Celine's career unfortunetly it stereotyped Celine as 'the woman that sang the Titanic song' I think she has alot of stunning songs vocially that are as good if not better than MHWGO. On her new album i hope she does more of a dance/pop influence Album....to break away from the 'stereotypical Celine' songs! J'adore Celine!! WendyB Posted February 16, 2010 at 06:11 PM Posted February 16, 2010 at 06:11 PM I agree with many of the comments on here, but for a lot of people (myself included) MHWGO was how and when we discovered Céline. I went to see Titanic and was swept away by the song at the end. It made me go out and hunt down the EP and, after listening to all the tracks, I wanted more! MHWGO isn't my most favourite Céline song - in fact I doubt I'd put it in my Top 10 - but I discovered Céline because of it, so it'll always have a "special" meaning for me Quote
justinecoria Posted February 16, 2010 at 06:41 PM Posted February 16, 2010 at 06:41 PM Mmhh, to me MHWGO is probably Celine's most underrated song. The lyrics might be cheesy, but musically and vocally, it's a masterpiece. The thing is that only Celine can sing it this way. The beginning is so fluid, pure, precise. An impressive musicality that you hear so well with earphones. It's just crystal clear, no frills, no RNB vibe, a note at a time. And the end is perfect. She's going with her whole voice, no straining to hit the high notes. Just the same voice, with more power, a continuity with when her voice was soft. In this song, she uses her voice like an instrument. That's why the "thatsh" and "my heart will go ondandon" blend so well in this song. 1 Quote
4ef0 Posted February 16, 2010 at 07:32 PM Posted February 16, 2010 at 07:32 PM I'm agree too.that that's one of her biggest hits. But I like this song only when celine is singing it live, because in the album version her voice sounds so different,strange.. On the music video ste stylists made Celine looks like a sweetish doll in white. That's not the Celine, who we see in another clips,concerts,tours....The first song that I heard was All by myself when i was 5 years old.Since then i am fan of Celine,it could be strange but also children could be fan of Celine.AN now I'm 17 yrs old and still Celine fan.I like her rnb, rock, dance style of music and of course her ballads. maceta_biloxi Posted February 16, 2010 at 07:36 PM Posted February 16, 2010 at 07:36 PM I don't think is the song itself but it's how many time we heard the song already. The song is a masterpiece and is one of Celine best songs without a doubt. But everywhere to turn the dial is that song (sang by Celine and by others in every language in the world), nobody knows Celine beyond MHWGO, older people know previous hit songs from Celine and most of the people don't know anything about Celine after MHWGO. I think that where the issue resides, fans want a change for another great songs that Celine had recorded, that is why they prefer listening so other Celine songs than listen to MHWGO or TPOL or BYLM or IACBTM. Any way last night at Larry King's interview they showed a little part of Celine singing that song during the TCWT and I was shocked, brought back so many memories and is such a perfect song vocally and musically, and just between us i was glad that she sang it first at the Millennium concert and wait fro the unexpected song, now all the songs end with the same song so is very expected no surprises. Just my point of view. Quote Do What You Want But Harm No One http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs939.snc4/73202_10150111343007542_831827541_7586213_4279368_n.jpg...Looking Alike!?
