Mariah, Celine, & Whitney can't be the only 'divas' forever. Music will move on and it ain't the 90s anymore, and if they kept bringing back Celine & Mariah people would eventually stop watching  I'm so glad to see Jordin added, and I couldn't agree MORE with who they have. Except for Miley & Adele. Miley can't sing and Adele just is not popular here. So I ask, WHY.

Lea, the question of a bonafide 'diva' comes to point then. Does anyone even consider any of these artists 'divas'? I doubt that. If the criterion of the 'diva' tag has been substantially lowered, then Beyonce, Britney and even Christina should replace newbies like Adele, Smiley, Jordin and Leona who are just one albums old.

Anyways, it depends on the main motive of the night. At least it'll be popular amongst the teens of 13-17 with Smiley :puke:

I never said that Mariah, Celine and Whitney are the only divas. There are others who came before them and after them. Aretha (as much as I detest her), Tina, Madonna (I'm gonna regret saying this), Janet, Donna Summer, Patti LaBelle (bless her), Reba McIntyre, Barbra (being one of the torch bearers), Billie Holiday, Cher, Diana Ross are some of the few who came before or around the same tme as the big 3. Then there are some new ones who can be termed as the new age divas like Christina Aguilera, Beyonce (to some extent), Martina McBride, Anastacia among others.

But c'mon, artists who are just one album old can't be termed as 'divette' let alone a 'diva'

Anyway, I think its just going on in circles so I'll shut myself up after this post

Adele was awarded the Grammy Award for Best New Artist. Her music videos are all over VH1. She writes all of her lyrics; she is incredibly young; and she brings brilliant music to a giant music industry slump! Her jazzy voice is one of the most unique musical marvels since Norah Jones.

I agree with Kelly, Leona and Adele. They are on their way. I like Jordin and she can SING - but she has barely established a style. And I have no words for the other choice.

I like Melissa, so i'm glad she's joined. However it's a shame she has to share a stage with Miley Virus. I'll be watching her performances on YouTube along with Kelly, Leona, and Jordin. I refuse to watch it live because of Miley. Edited by Lymon

I think we've been spoiled...

We are used to Divas like Aretha, Tina, Cher, Celine, Mariah & Whitney, but guys the truth is that no one, no new singers sing like them anymore that's why it's so hard to accept the new generation of singers because there are no power voices anymore, there are no diva image anymore. So i think the Divas now are different and very very commercial with an average talent but it seems they have great acceptance among the young generations (of course...)

Many of the Divas this year (Kelly, Leona, Jordin, Jennifer, the guest divas) have great voices, so it's not them I have a problem with. It's the fact that they would choose Smiley Virus. She's the reason I refuse to watch and support VH1 Divas this year.

Back on topic, I decided to watch live and mute when Miley is on. Paula's blatant lip-syncing was bad, but I loved Jennifer's performance. Edited by Edwin

I had no idea Martina had such a strong voice! Wow, that was amazing! Martina, Jordin, and Leona had the best vocals of the night IMO.... Jennifer also. Hopefully when they release this as a DVD (assuming they do) all of Smiley's Viruses parts are removed, LOL.

I love Kelly and Melissa's song together! Bring Me Some Water is amazing. Miley ruined Sheryl's song, though.

Which is why Martina is called "The Celine Dion of Country Music" ;)

Oh really? I had no idea... I'll have to look at some of her stuff then. :)

I actually didn't think Miley was that bad with Sheryl's song. Although I hate her music and think it sucks, I don't think her voice sucks. Give her a good song that isn't so disney-ish (like The Climb) and I think she'd surprise some of us.

OMG! now that's the way to end a show!!

"Bring Me Some Water" was amazing...probably the best Divas performance ever. :punk:

NEW YORK, Sept. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Adele, Kelly Clarkson, Miley Cyrus,

full force after a four-year hiatus, with a live telecast on Thursday,

September 17 at 9pm* from the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) in Brooklyn, New

guests for the show included The Rickey Minor Band as the "VH1 Divas" house

band. The show was hosted by the legendary Paula Abdul.

Proving that she is still a musical diva in her own right, Paula Abdul

jump-started the night with a rousing opening musical medley of her famous

hits, bringing the returning franchise "VH1 Divas" back with a bang.

The high-energy continued as Jennifer Hudson took the stage, kicking off the

first "Divas" performance with her chart-topping song "Spotlight."

The Diva of comedy, Kathy Griffin, next brought the laughs in her signature

style, bantering with Paula Abdul onstage, leading Griffin to quip, "I promise

not to make fun of you...until you leave the room!" She then introduced the

inimitable Kelly Clarkson, who performed a sultry version of her hit "Already

Gone."

Singer Keri Hilson and actor Corbin Bleu were up next introducing pop diva

Jordin Sparks, who got the audience dancing on their feet while performing her

single "S.O.S."

introduced diva Adele, who gave a haunting, powerhouse performance of her song

"Hometown Glory."

"VH1 Divas" alum Toni Braxton introduced Leona Lewis into the divas club, who

took the stage to sing "Happy." Leona was then joined onstage by the ultimate

the song "True Colors" with her.

introducing Miley Cyrus, who kept the audience jamming on their feet with her

infectious single "Party in the USA."

as she introduced Adele and R&B Soul songstress India.Arie. They took down the

house in a duet of India.Arie's breakthrough hit "Video."

introducing the sensational pop/country collaboration between Jordin Sparks

and Martina McBride, who sang "A Broken Wing."

spine-chilling, moving rendition of "All in Love is Fair."

rock/pop duet between Miley Cyrus and Sheryl Crow, who sang a re-imagined

version of "If It Makes You Happy."

East coast met west coast onstage as former "The Hills" star Lauren Conrad and

"The City" star Whitney Port jointly introduced the vocal pairing of Kelly

Clarkson and rock goddess Melissa Etheridge, who sang "Bring Me Some Water."

This popped up as one of my google alerts and I thought it was actually quite nice for a change! This guy is discussing this years VH1 Divas and then lists his top 5 Divas of all time: (Mariah Carey no where to be seen!)

i agree with his list :)

Sean's top five pop divas

5. Madonna: She's not exactly a world-class warbler. Then again, Like a Virgin ain't exactly Ave Maria. But what Madge lacks in vocal derring-do, she makes up for in invention and scariness. Her lovely M.J. eulogy at the MTV VMAs will only add to queenly aura.

4. Whitney Houston: Back before Bobby Brown inhaled her life force like one of those Dementors in Harry Potter, the Queen of the Night could lay claim to one of the great church voices of the 20th century.

3. Celine Dion: It's easy to make fun of Celine. It's even easier to make fun of her husband, Rene. And yet the Canadian chest-pounder is an indomitable sales force who owned Vegas during her stand at Caesar's.

2. Barbra Streisand: Any diva worth her designer bottled water chilled at exactly 76 degrees will have as many fans as foes. And Babs might be the most polarizing lady on our list. And yet, La Streisand could win almost any singing contest. Unless she was going up against …

1. Aretha Franklin: "Whatchuwant? Baby I got it!" You can't argue with the Queen of Soul taking the top spot. She does what she wants, including wearing a steroidal bow on her hat at the presidential inauguration. Aretha: large, in charge and forever the diva to beat.
