Tyler1991 Posted July 28, 2009 at 07:39 AM Posted July 28, 2009 at 07:39 AM Kelly, Leona, Beyonce, Christina would be acceptable. In today's time (excluding Celine/Mariah/Whitney) those four have the best voices, regardless of how long they have been around for. Beyoncé = yes. Christina = yes. Kelly & Leona = no. Kelly & Leona haven't been around long enough to prove themselves as being a lasting image on the music scene. They could still easily disappear (ex. Kelly Clarkson's album My December). Once they've been in and have lasted being in the industry for, I don't know, ten years then I'll consider them Diva worthy - maybe. <Joe> Are you kidding me? Kelly has been around as long as Beyonce has (as a solo artist), and has been ALOT more successful then her (or at least I feel so). Based on your comment, you seem to think it's about how long they have been in the business, and not about the voice (which is annoying that so many people share such a view). Kelly will be in about her 9th year as a solo artist.....and as an ENGLISH artist...Celine was only in her 8th in the year 1998. So based on your comment, Celine had no business being on Divas 1998. I don't care if it's an artists first year or tenth year, if they have the voice that is capable of hitting the notes, that is more important to me then having someone with a sub-par voice out there who has been out there for 15 years. The event will be televised live on VH1 on Thursday, September 17 at 9pm from Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) Howard Gilman Opera House in Brooklyn, New York. While the latest class of "Divas" are hardly heavy hitters in the Diva department, Hear This is hearing that negotiations are on to tap Whitney Houston as the headliner. Houston releases her first album in seven years on September 1 and her guru Clive Davis is looking for a showcase to present Whitney's music nationally. Don't expect Aretha Franklin - the Diva's diva - to attend because she is busy that night playing a headlining gig at Radio City Music Hall. Tyler1991 Posted July 29, 2009 at 01:48 AM Posted July 29, 2009 at 01:48 AM I thought there were 8 total? And there are 4 1/2 now....? Whitney, Leona, Adele, Kelly, and uh..Miley. Quote
Tyler1991 Posted July 29, 2009 at 02:44 AM Posted July 29, 2009 at 02:44 AM Maybe only four. I've never heard of this Adele person. I'm sure she sings better then Miley, but she sure isn't more popular than her. Quote

CelineAndRene Posted July 31, 2009 at 01:13 AM Posted July 31, 2009 at 01:13 AM In her short career, Miley has proven herself a true diva. She sings, acts on TV and in movies, sells a clothing line through Wal-Mart, and her memoir Miles to Go reached #1 on the New York Times children's best seller list. Born Destiny Hope Cyrus, she was nicknamed "Miley" because she kept smiling ("Smiley") as a baby, and she changed her name legally to Miley Ray Cyrus in May 2008. She's written over a hundred songs in her career, including many that have been used in her hit Disney show "Hannah Montana," and co-wrote 8 of the 13 songs on her 2008 album "Breakout." By 2007, she was ranked number 17 on Forbes' List of the 20 Top-Earning Young Superstars. She released a 3D concert movie of her "Best of Both Worlds Tour" in early 2008, which became the highest grossing Super Bowl weekend release ever. She was listed in Time magazine's 100 Most Influential People in The World, and Forbes magazine ranked her number 35 on "The Celebrity 100" list with earnings of over $25 million in 2008. She was nominated for a Golden Globe for the song "I Thought I Lost You" for the "Bolt" soundtrack, and hosted the 2008 CMT Music Awards with her father that April. That same year she hosted the Teen Choice Awards. Miley celebrated her 16th birthday with a charity fundraiser at Disneyland, which was closed early for the event. It was attended by 5,000 fans at $250 per ticket, with the proceeds going to the charity Youth Service America, a youth volunteering organization. LOL too bad all 100+ of those songs are horrible.. I will lose all respect for VH1 Divas Show if a song like "Fly on the Wall" is played there. I wonder what Leona will sing? hopefully "I will be" Quote "...It's the circle of life. Tyler1991 Posted July 31, 2009 at 02:01 AM Posted July 31, 2009 at 02:01 AM I hope she does Bleeding Love and Run. Maybe even A Moment Like This (she hasn't done that since winning X-Factor)? But she'll probably do BL and Run. She may do a new song for promotion of a new album. Quote

I don't ONLY believe the longevity factor is what makes a person a "Diva" in the music industry. HOWEVER, one should take that into account. If a female artist has an amazing voice that is great. They are truly blessed to have that talent/gift. However, to me that does not automatically make them a diva. A diva is someone who can stand the test of times and trends, someone who can still sell loads of albums (or downloads) year after year after year. A diva is someone who has proven their worth in the music industry via charity functions and other noble appearances. A diva is someone who stands up for her beliefs and is not afraid to state those beliefs no matter the repercussions (ex. Céline's outburst on Larry King Live in regards to Hurricane Katrina). In regards to Celine only being in her eighth year...she had been in the industry much longer before America. She had proven herself in Canada and many other countries. Then on top of that, she proved she was a force to be wrecken with in the States. Learning English faster than most and releasing amazing selling album after amazing selling album she showed she was in the MAKINGS to be a true diva. The same can be said for Beyoncé. Though I may not entirely agree with her career choices or like all of her music, she has proven herself to be not only relevant through the years, but also another force to be wrecken with in the industry. She showed she had what it took to be the lead vocalist of one of the best r&b groups of all-time, Destiny's Child. Then as if it that weren't enough she took on a solo career and took the world by storm - AGAIN. All of this happening in more than 10 years. In the end it isn't ONLY about having a voice to be a Diva. Anybody can have a voice, but it doesn't make them a Diva, a Divo, or a Divette. It is the accomplishments they have made that makes them a diva. It is how they have shaped and helped the world that makes them a Diva. It is how they are able to sustain life in an everchanging industry that makes them a Diva. It is how they are able to be trendsetters that makes them a Diva. It is how they evolve and cause the world to evolve along with them that makes them a Diva. With that said, sorry, but none of the so-far-mentioned ladies confirmed for VH1 Divas '09 qualify. Kelly Clarkson still has time to prove this, but she hasn't yet. Nor has Adele, nor has Leona Lewis, and for sure nor has Miley Cyrus. I do wish the best for each of these ladies in their endevours, but to classify them as "Divas" is a complete and utter shame to the word. <Joe> Quote
