Sony Succeeds with 'This Is It'

Source: Boxoffice.com

Michael Jackson fans across the country are making the concert film a success at the box office.

by Christian Toto

Michael Jackson’s This is It, the posthumous homage to the late King of Pop, grossed $2.2 million from midnight showings. According to Sony, the concert film has already exceeded that haul from Wednesday matinees.

Call it a pop culture hurricane or simply a belated embrace of the late star’s legacy, but whatever Sony Pictures did in the run-up to the film’s debut clearly clicked with audiences.

Sony Pictures deserves credit for properly massaging a pop culture phenomenon.

Sean Phillips, executive producer of Yahoo! Movies, says part of the studio’s successful marketing campaign for This is It boiled down to timing.

“The movie’s coming out so close to when he passed away. It’s tough to have more built-in publicity than that,” Phillips says.

And Sony wisely focused the film on Jackson’s talents, not his often disturbing personal life.

“It’s not going to dwell on any of his oddities or the well-known troubles in his life,” Phillips says. “He’s doing all the favorite moves we know and love, stuff the younger generation doesn’t even pull off.”

The studio also wisely made the movie something of an event, claiming it will only run in theaters for two weeks, “not unlike how the show was supposed to be,“ he says of the concert Jackson was preparing for in the weeks before his death.

Robert Marich, author of “Marketing to Moviegoers: Second Edition,” says the film’s sterling trailer whetted the appetites of long-time Jackson fans.

“They had a motivated fan base. So far, what they’ve shown satisfied them,” Marich says.

It better, since Sony ponied up $60 million to concert promoter AEG Entertainment for the rights to the rehearsal footage.

Marich says Sony also did a good job minimizing Jackson’s non-music headlines, focusing like a laser on his songbook.

“It’s an issue,” Marich says of the singer’s plastic surgery misadventures and criminal accusations. “He’s a tainted celebrity. It’s a wall that Sony had to climb.”

Even though the movie’s advance tickets sales have been through the proverbial roof, that doesn’t necessarily spell long-term success for This is It.

“I’m dubious that the advance ticket sales are projectable like some other movies like Harry Potter,” Marich says. “It’s an open question if it‘ll draw in a bigger audience.”

The film could fade as fast as it opened, he cautions.

“Concert films are like horror films. They can open strong but they traditionally don’t hold up,” he says.

The current hype surrounding the film could continue well past its theatrical run.

“The whole game isn’t cinema. It could do so-so in cinema and do gangbusters in DVD,” he says. “[sony] has every incentive to really promote it.”

So what about a sequel?

Phillips thinks the creative folks behind the movie would prefer This is It to be the final, fitting tribute to Jackson.

But if the film keeps on selling tickets anything is possible. It wouldn’t be the first time the death of a singing legend kicked off the start of a new phase in his or her career.

“Sadly you never know,” Phillips says.

Michael Jackson's new album This Is It is expected to top the albums chart next week, with sales of over 300,000 copies according to Hits. (based on the album's 1st day sales)

Michael Jackson Album Companion to Movie Will Debut at #1, Creed, Taylor Swift Next

October 28, 2009

Michael Jackson’s back…just in time to scare up some album sales for Halloween.

The late superstar continues to bolster the record business, with the Epic release of the companion album to This Is It hitting retail to the tune of what looks now like around 300k in first-week sales.

That would be more than enough for it to debut at #1, but as the film rolls out this week to record box office ($2.2 million in receipts last night), that number could well trend upward. We’ll keep an eye on it for you as we tote up the one-day sales figures from those retailers still solvent enough to keep the doors open.

Wind-up’s comebacking Creed celebrates the resurrection of Scott Stapp and company, with between 100-110k in sales for the aptly titled Full Circle. That will put the band co-managed by Geary/Paul in a race with Chop Shop/Atlantic’s Twilight soundtrack and Big Machine’s Taylor Swift, who this week releases a Deluxe Edition of her four-times-platinum-plus Fearless album, which looks to be in the 90-95k range.

J/RMG’s Rod Stewart Soulbook, a collection of R&B standards featuring duets with Mary J. Blige, Jennifer Hudson and Smokey Robinson, is headed for between 80-85k, while Jason Flom’s perennial Christmas attraction, Lava/Atlantic’s Trans-Siberian Orchestra, is in the 70-75k neighborhood for its annual dose of seasonal prog-rock cheer.

Other releases on tap include Brushfire/Universal Republic’s Jack Johnson (38-42k), Deutsche Grammophon’s Sting holiday collection (36-40k), Strange Music old-school rappers Tech N9ne (31-35k) and Hollywood headbangers Atreyu (28-32k), the same total as Columbia’s Train, Sire’s Tegan & Sarah and Interscope’s Wolfmother, followed by E1’s Brian McKnight (18-22k).

Also of note, Victory’s Between the Buried and Me (9-12k), Evil Teen’s southern rockers Gov’t Mule (8-10k) and Geffen’s Orianthi, the female teen guitarist who would’ve been featured on Michael Jackson’s ill-fated tour (3-4k).

The market was down 2% vs. last week, down 19% vs. same week last year and now down 14% year to date.

And you thought NBC had it tough having to air Jay Leno five nights a week.

this is gonna be his 7th #1 album in the US. his last was 2001's Invincible.

My wife and I saw it last night. Not a whole lot more I can say that's probably already been said.

"This is It" might've been a show to top all his other shows. The effects looked amazing. Michael seemed to still have most of his moves - he looked a little stiff on some of the songs but that could just be attributed to it being a rehearsal - and his voice was just as incredible as it has always been.

AND HE WAS GOING TO SING STUFF FROM "INVINCIBLE" (my favorite album!) :whee:  :kicking:  :whee:

Sadly, I'm still not convinced even by the footage that he would've survived 50 concerts in such a short time. Nor was I convinced that the show should've started in such a short time frame. Celine's show had 6 months of rehearsals, Jackson's would've had 3. I believe in MJ, but even for a stellar performer as him, that's way too short of a time period to be truly ready in. Especially with MJ being such a perfectionist, and appearing as fragile as he did.

All things aside, I think the film did present Michael in a good light, and it went very far to cement his legacy as one the greatest entertainers, if not THE greatest entertainer, in history. Its so very tragic that we'll never get to see another masterpiece like this from him, and I must admit as a fan the film did open old wounds about his death. However, and please forgive my expression of faith here, I think that fans like myself should hold onto hope that justice will be served, God will punish those that sought to destroy Michael in Heaven if not here on Earth, and we will see and hear Michael again someday.

no those pictures are not included on the This is It album booklet (i don't know if other versions have those, i got the 24 page booklet edition. some have like 46 so i don't know). but there are a lot of fantastic rehearsal photos on the album! quite disappointed though about the track listing. :angry2:

his voice never sounded better. when he began to sing few lines of his song Speechless, i was literally SPEECHLESS! i could not believe how good his voice was during that rehearsal! but for some weird reason, that song didn't appear on the This is It album. :ermm:

He is It at U.S., international box office.

"What just seemed like a concert movie in the beginning has turned out to be so much more."

-Rory Bruer, Sony Pictures

MICHAEL JACKSON’S THIS IS IT TOPS WEEKEND BOX OFFICE

Racks Up $32.5 Million U.S., $103 Million Worldwide, Run Extended Through Thanksgiving

November 2, 2009

Michael Jackson’s This Is It fell short of the $250m worldwide gross some had predicted, but still racked up enough business over five days to gross $103 million worldwide and $34.5 million in the U.S.

Sony Pictures, which paid a reported $60 million to acquire the rights to the behind-the-scenes documentary, saw the well-reviewed movie top the weekend stateside box office with $21.3 million in 5,500 screens at 3,481 theaters, the fifth highest-grossing Halloween release and the most ever for a concert film, beating Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour, which grossed more than $70 million worldwide last year for Disney.

Sony also announced they would extend the movie’s two-week-long engagement through Thanksgiving, which is no surprise to most observers.

The strong performance of This Is It, along with the continued success of Paramount Pictures’ low-budget horror flick Paranormal Activity helped domestic box office results to run more than 5% ahead of the same weekend last year. Overall box office continues to outpace last year, with ticket sales up by nearly 7.7% and attendance up by more than 3.6%.

This Is It’s five-day U.S. gross of $34.5 million fell below some expectations, as did the estimated $68.5 million the movie did internationally.

Rory Bruer, head of world-wide distribution for Sony Pictures, insisted the documentary performed in line with studio expectations for North America and outpaced them internationally, adding that the studio first projected the movie would open domestically in the range of $30 million to $40 million.

Sony announced on Sunday that it would extend the limited two-week run for This Is It for three more weeks in domestic theaters. Internationally, the studio will extend the movie on a "territory-by-territory basis," likely ranging from one week to three weeks. The DVD will probably arrive in February.

Bruer added that the studio is so pleased with the film that it is even considering an Oscar campaign for the picture. "Michael was one of those few artists that touched everyone on the planet," he says. "What just seemed like a concert movie in the beginning has turned out to be so much more."

THIS IS HIT!!

___________________________________________________________________

Creed, TSO, Rod Stewart, Sting, Jack Johnson All Bow in Top 10

November 3, 2009

Michael Jackson still has some pretty nifty dance moves.

The late King of Pop earns himself a rare double-play by topping both the movie box office tally and the HITS Album sales chart, as This Is It moonwalks to #1 with a total of 379k.

Jackson tops Big Machine’s Taylor Swift, whose deluxe edition of Fearless, with six new tracks, moves #7-2, +230% for 111k and a cumulative total north of 4.1m. Not bad for a teenager. And that total could rise considerably after her expected Grammy nominations next month.

Wind-up comeback rockers Creed come Full Circle with a #3 debut, followed by new chart entries from Lava/Atlantic’s holiday perennials Trans-Siberian Orchestra (#4), J Records/RMG’s Rod Stewart Soulbook (#5), Deutsche Grammophon’s Sting If on a Winter’s Night collection (#6) and Brushfire/Universal Republic’s Jack Johnson live acoustic set, En Concert (#10).

Reprise’s Michael Buble (#7), Chop Shop/Atlantic’s Twilight Saga: The New Moon (#8) and Curb’s Tim McGraw (#9) are the Top 10 holdovers.

Other Top 50 newcomers include Strange Music’s Tech N9ne (#14), Anti’s Swell Season (#16), Hollywood’s Atreyu (#17), Interscope’s Wolfmother (#18), Columbia’s Train (#19), E1 Entertainment’s Brian McKnight (#20), Sire’s Tegan & Sara (#22), Victory’s Between the Buried & Me (#44) and Def Jam/IDJ’s Triple C’s (#47).

Jackson’s catalog albums also showed double-digit gains, with Number Ones (#13) up 24%, Thriller (#38-29) 39% and Essential (#41-36) 30%.

Aside from Swift and Jackson, Interscope’s Lady Gaga (#24, +3%) and Kiss Records’ Kiss (#25, +2%) also showed sales gains.

Topping this week’s releases is 19/Arista Nashville country superstar Carrie Underwood, with Columbia’s Glee soundtrack, Sony Music’s Now 32, Interscope’s Weezer, RCA/RMG’s Foo Fighters and DGC’s Nirvana Live at Reading CD/DVD also on tap. The following week (11/10), it’s Bon Jovi and the Nov. 17 line-up includes Norah Jones, 50 Cent, John Mayer, Idol winner Kris Allen and Leona Lewis.

I saw the movie the other day and the man is a GENIUS. This show was going to be unbelievable. It makes you sick watching it that he's no longer around. The man just oozed talent, and his dance moved came effortlessly. He could definitely still sing! He seemed to be in great spirits and I thought he looked better than he has in years and years, if ever. He sure put everything into making this project. What a shame all that hard work couldn't be brought to fruition. I'm sure everyone was just devastated. It's just such a tragedy that he's gone. What a talent.

Sony and another co. are vying for the rights to 70 unreleased MJ songs.

If there's someone to blame about his death, we can thank Sony and AEG Incs for killing him; otherwise, RIP for a Man who was bigger than life!
