R.I.P Yeah. The French president said there is little chance of finding any survivors. I hope they find the wreckage soon, but it could be anywhere in the Atlantic between Brazil and Paris. There were 228 people on that Airbus A330-200. It's very rare for lightning to bring down a plane. They need to find the black box so they know exactly what happened. Quote
Timster Posted June 1, 2009 at 06:52 PM Author Posted June 1, 2009 at 06:52 PM From Sky News:A statement on the Air France website confirmed the plane was transporting 58 Brazilians, 61 French (a percentage of whom were French-passport carrying Brazilians), 26 Germans, nine Italians and nine Chinese. Six Swiss, five Lebanese, four Hungarians, three Norwegians, three Slovakians, two Americans, two Moroccans were also on board. Of the remaining 18 passengers, 16 were from Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Croatia, Denmark, Estonia, Gambia, Iceland, the Netherlands, the Phillipines,Romania, Russia, South Africa, Sweden and Turkey. The nationality of the last two remains unknown. French president Nicolas Sarkozy admitted there is only a "very small" chance of finding any of the passengers alive after the "tragic accident". angelil78 Posted June 1, 2009 at 07:00 PM Posted June 1, 2009 at 07:00 PM So sad Iceland has a population of about 300 thousand and one Icelandic person was on the airplane so it´s likely I know who he is or someone who does. I just know it was a male between 40 and 50 Quote

neilg Posted June 1, 2009 at 08:41 PM Posted June 1, 2009 at 08:41 PM It always saddens me as an aviator to learn about a loss like this. I don't remember reading about an airliner being brought down by lightning before this. Early reports suggest that the A330 may have been struck by lightning, which is not an ideal situation, but aircraft are designed to channel the current away from important and sensitive equipment. For example, the nose cones of many aircraft have lightning diversion strips to channel the electricity away from the radar and communication equipment. I don't know if the A330 has areas of fuselage which are more critical if struck by lightning, by having control systems close to the aircraft skin. One thing that I didn't know about the A330 (and I assume there is the same feature on all Airbus aircraft) is that it sends messages automatically saying that there has been a short circuit in the system. But technology and aircraft aside, many hundreds of people are going to be affected by losing their friends and relatives - in a situation that they had no control over. It's upsetting, and I feel very sad reading about the accident, but I hope that an investigation can shed light on the last moments of these 228 people. Quote
Matias Posted June 1, 2009 at 09:10 PM Posted June 1, 2009 at 09:10 PM Some experts says that the lighting theory is not realible since this kind of aircrafts can still fly, they are saying that maybe a bomb made the plane crush Quote http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_maic6m257V1rbfceqo2_250.gif"No no, put it back..."

I thought they already ruled out terrorists. I'm sure they'll find the wreckage in the next few days so we'll all know what happened soon. Quote
