The process begins with members and record companies submitting entries, which are then screened for eligibility and category placement. The Academy's voting members, all involved in the creative and technical processes of recording, then participate in (1) the nominating process that determines the five finalists in each category; and (2) the final voting process which determines the GRAMMY winners.

 

Submission

Recording Academy members and record companies enter recordings and music videos released during the eligibility year which they consider worthy of recognition in the GRAMMY Awards process.

 

Screening

Reviewing sessions by more than 150 experts in various fields are held to ensure that entered recordings meet specific qualifications and have been placed in appropriate fields such as Rock, R&B, Jazz, Country, Gospel, New Age, Rap, Classical and Latin, among others. The purpose of screenings is not to make artistic or technical judgments about the recordings, but rather to make sure that each entry is eligible and placed in its proper category.

 

Nominating

First-round ballots with lists of eligible recordings in all fields, except those voted on by special nominating committees, are sent to voting members who return their ballots to the independent accounting firm of Deloitte for tabulation. To help ensure the quality of the voting, members are directed to vote only in their fields of expertise; they may nominate in the four general categories (Record Of The Year, Album Of The Year, Song Of The Year and Best New Artist) and in no more than nine out of 31 fields on their ballots.

 

Special Nominating

Committees In craft and other specialized categories, final nominations are determined by national nomination review committees comprised of voting members from all of The Academy's Chapter cities.

 

Final Voting

Lists of the finalists are sent to voting members with their second round ballots. The finalists determined by the special nominating committees are also included on these lists. In this final round, Recording Academy members may vote in the four general categories and in no more than eight of the 31 fields. Ballots again are tabulated in secrecy by the independent accounting firm, Deloitte.

 

Results

Results of members' voting are not known until the GRAMMY Awards presentation ceremony when names of the winners are delivered by Deloitte in sealed envelopes. GRAMMY Award winners are revealed during the GRAMMY Awards telecast.

Oh no, Stevo. It doesn't matter whether it's been a huge chart-topping single or not, any song released during the eligibility period can be considered for a Grammy. The past three winners for Record of the Year: "Rehab" by Amy Winehouse, "Not Ready To Make Nice" by Dixie Chicks, and "Boulevard Of Broken Dreams" by Green Day were huge top 10 singles on the Billboard Hot 100. In 2005, the award went to "Here We Go Again" by Ray Charles and Norah Jones, which never made it to the chart.

As much as Celine is long overdue for a single Grammy nomination AND the fact that "My Love" is brillant, I can't help but have the gut feeling the academy is going to ignore her once again

 

Pop Female performance is way too competitive.....Duffy's "Mercy" Pinks "So What" Rhiannas "Take a bow" Leona Lewis's "Bleeding Love" and Natasha Beddingfeild are all considered locks!

 

 

As for the General categories, forget it.......celines out big time.

 

Her only 'possible shots' are in Long form music video (for live in las vegas) and MAYBE best pop vocal album, but pop vocal album is pushing it!

You never know guys. The major winners in the past few years didn't have a lot of airplay either. They vote based on quality, not popularity...and Celine has been involved with so many people for the making of Taking Chances so maybe she won't be ignored after all. This is album has a little bit of something for everyone. I hope she makes it through. I know one of the professors at my school is a member of the academy...he's won 7 grammys for writing the liner notes in several jazz albums. One of his grammys is actually on display in the library and it's so cool to see up close. Maybe I'll shoot him an email and ask him to vote for Celine.

IMO celine was always quite ignored at the grammys, even when she was at the very top. i think this time she should be happy if she even got one nomintaion, not to mention the award itself. this time its all for alicia keys to take, and rightfully so, her last album was great, and i still cant stop listening to it, unlike TC which i already am over with. its a shame but celine's career is going no where at this point, i'm just glad the tour is such a succsess obviously.

 

also i've seen alicia in belgrade live in concert unlike celine who had always been an elitist performer, never really "took chances" and came to any country aside from poland and czeck republic.... ashame really...

 

but i still love celine, my number one favorite singer
