Love, Posted August 14, 2008 at 02:15 AM Posted August 14, 2008 at 02:15 AM I just had a mild heart attack! I woke up to find my computer all off. I had realized earlier that I had not shut it off at all prior to taking my nap. So, I rushed to it, pushed the power button. So, I pushed, pushed, and pushed, and nothing! Then, I held onto it, and it turned on, gave a "dying cry" and just fainted away. I tried the same thing, and it did it again and again for like thirty times. I was so saddened and disappointed. I didn't know what to do. Even if I cried, tears wouldn't come out because I was so shocked. There were so many things in the computer that are irreplaceable - photographs, projects, notes - things from my life. Since, I live such a "digital" life - with business correspondence and business projects on the computer, photographs captured on digital cameras, notes and journals typed and filed away on the computer - a lot were in this computer. So, I did what ever I could. I started praying to God again and again, as any Christian would do. Then, I thought about "The Secret" and started telling the computer "you're alive." LOL And I kept pressing and pressing. All of a sudden, I opened up the computer, held onto the power button on the monitor (the power button on the monitor ignites the whole computer), pressed held on, and kept pressing, and pressing, and OMGGGGG, it turned on!!!! :w00t: Immediately, I hooked up my external hard drives, and began copying all my files into them. I began cutting out duplicate files. I came across the cherishable and precious photographs from family events, birthdays, weddings and memorial services - and I just had this gigantic smile and little tears in my eyes. I WAS SO HAPPY! Now, everything is stored and backed-up!!! So, for this moment, I just want to encourage each one of you - if you have things on your computer and do not have them backed-up on DVDs or a hard drive - do it now! Quote

Even when you have an hard drive failure you can restore much of your data on the disc. Sometimes you can do it yourself (if you know what to do, and dumping a hard drive in a freezer is NOT and I repeat NOT a good idea to recover data) or otherwise you can ask a professional company to do it for you. Mostly it wil cost something of 100 USD or less. Quote ...

[/color] Had about the same problem once, but it was actually my motherboard and my hard drive wich had crashed... I had recovered about 95% of my data, only 5% was lost. But since that day I have a small data server in my home office where all the data is stored. For the important files (photo's, video or regular files) it is burned on 2 separte discs. One is stored in house and one goes to my vault at the bank (I make a new disc every 2 to 3 years since DVD's won't last forever). The recent files (last year) are also stored on a file server at home. Never lost a single file since then Quote ...
Allie Posted August 15, 2008 at 12:00 AM Posted August 15, 2008 at 12:00 AM that's why I save everything on my external. glad it finally turned on though! I've had that happen to me more than once (just recently - I usually back up my stuff once a month to my external, and I hadn't done it for like three months. then my computer crashed, so I lost everything I had saved in the past few months, along with 8,000+ songs that were not on my iPod) and I know how devastating it is. Cheerfuljane Posted August 15, 2008 at 02:26 AM Posted August 15, 2008 at 02:26 AM Not like I`m paranoid or anything but I have everything backed up in triplicate and stored in 3 different countries just in case Quote

Jacqui Posted September 20, 2008 at 03:29 AM Posted September 20, 2008 at 03:29 AM I tried to take your advice...I have most my stuff saved but not all of it, so I bought some of those USB things, but they don't work, I got a message saying that it was incompatible and if I proceed it may make my computer unstable. So I bought some CDs to back stuff up on. Tried to save stuff on them. It told me it saved. But when I checked, there was nothing on the CDs! Conclusion: Computers are b*tches. Quote

Conclusion: Computers are b*tches.I agree to you last comment, they choose the best times to stop working . Mine is 3 years old now (laptop) and fair enough the poor thing has had a pretty full on life being used a school computer in all my lessons every schoolday of the year, plus all the other internet browsing ect i do in my free time. Well anyway it has crashed about 4 times in 2 weeks! I am really scared its going to completely die and nothing i backed up! So this has been a wake up call....thankyou i will now get my but in gear and back up all my precious photos and videos which hold memories , songs and all my school work. The onyl thing is, my CD drive is broken and there is no point getting it repaired when its getting old, so i can;t back up onto CD's so i will have to transfer it all onto anoter computer with a USB stick.
