Celine sues, says architect tuned her out

Even in the rarified air of those at the top of their profession, there's a hierarchy.

 

Big-deal Delray architect Randall Stofft probably should've kept that in mind.

 

 

 

Instead, beachfront construction guru Stofft decided to take on diva Celine Dion, and the Canadian's French heart stopped going on (and on) for the man!

 

 

 

Dion's suing Stofft for allegedly causing delays as long as a year on her $3.2 million home construction on Jupiter Island. She wants damages, too, to the tune of a quarter mil.

 

 

 

"They're not even close to getting a COD (certificate of occupancy)," said the island's building official, Jeff Newell.

 

 

 

Yet, songbird Dion and her tribe last year scoured the Jupiter area for a private school for son Rene-Charles, expecting the 9,800-square-foot mansion to be done by now. Dion fired Stofft and replaced him with WPB architect Roger Janssen, who drew her a home that blends elements of Key West, New Orleans and Victorian architecture.

I'm told the 40-year-old singer of The Power of Love, who's touring in Germany after her five-year gig in Las Vegas, was adamant she wanted a large octagonal room facing the beach.

 

 

 

And Stofft — who's usually hired for his vision, not just to implement someone else's — reportedly refused to put anything of the sort in the blueprints, even giving her some 'tude.

 

 

 

Big no-no!

 

 

 

According to the lawsuit filed in Stuart, Dion (through her Montreal corporation, Renlec) contracted Stofft in 2005 to come up with plans, construction documents and design development. He was to be paid $550,000, plus expenses.

 

 

 

The court docs show Stofft resisted Dion's octagonal wishes for months. He flew twice to Montreal, at her expense, to convince her his way was best. In turn, Dion's people hired a design specialist to build a model of what she wanted.

 

 

 

"Again, Stofft rejected the directive, this time mocking both the model and the design and attacking them in a vulgar fashion," the complaint reads.

 

 

 

Dion fired Stofft in March 2006. He then put a lien on the property, claiming that she still owes him $104,500 for his work. The court file shows Dion already plunked down $116,502.

 

 

 

No one returned a call placed to Dion's office in Canada, and her local attorney, Michael Weeks, declined comment. Stofft, whose defense is that he was just doing his job, didn't return calls to his home.

If he didn't feel comfortable with the wishes of his soon-to-be client he should have told Celine and those involved that his view is different from hers and that it would best to go with someone else. OR try to rationally discuss why he thinks what she wants isn't good, but if she still wants it then to do his best to come up with something beautiful in the shape of an octagon!

 

This guy seriously deserves to be out of a job. He has no business scense whatsoever!

I got to thinking about this, and I'm wondering if he didn't want to do it because of the hurricanes there...maybe that isn't a safe structure for FL on the beach. I don't know but if she wanted it then give it to her, and if you don't want to do it, then tell her and explain why and get someone else to do it...
