This time, I made a Halloween theme wallpaper. For those of you who are not familiar with this event, in the US, we have a holiday (though not a day off from work) called Halloween. From Wikipedia, Halloween, or Hallowe'en, is a holiday celebrated on the night of October 31. Halloween activities include trick-or-treating, ghost tours, bonfires, costume parties, visiting "haunted houses", carving Jack o' Lanterns (from pumpkins), reading scary stories and watching horror movies. Irish immigrants carried versions of the tradion to North America in the nineteenth centruy. Trick or Treating involves children dressing up in costume and going from door to door in their neighborhoods saying "Trick or Treat". The people at the house are supposed to give them candy, the "Treat", and if they don't, traditionally, the children would pull a prank on those people, the "Trick", though that doesn't happen much anymore.

 

So much for the explanation. Here is the wallpaper. (The background is from a photo I took at my home in Natchez, MS). I hope you like it.

I've done a few more using a (oh, no, not again) fractal background, though this one looks a lot different than the others. A few variations on the same theme. Hopefully, y'all will like a couple of these. As always, let me know what you think.

And, xxROSExx, nice to know Halloween is in more places than just the US. It's become a really big holiday here, especially in New Orleans. They have started a new parade club, called the "Krewe of Boo", similar to a Mardi Gras club, and they will parade on Halloween night. Plus, the atmosphere in New Orleans for Mardi Gras is almost a crazy as Mardi Gras and New Year's. Of course, this city uses any excuse to have a big party.

 

Question: do y'all like the fractal as the background? Am I the only person who thinks fractals are really cool? I have been having a lot of fun making these, so I am wondering if you like the effect.

 

The nice thing about fractals is that there are almost an infinite number of them and you never really know what you're going to come up with when you start out on the software. I have chosen an equation (out of lots), a filter (out of lots) and chosen a color palette (out of several available) and just by changing those 3 things, a multitude of really neat pictures get generated and you don't need to know a thing about fractals. If anyone is interested, let me know and I can post some links to the 3 different freeware fractal programs that I use.

Hi Ann, Sofie and SandyCeline! Thank y'all so much for the enthusiastic response to the fractals! I thought you might like them. There are 3 programs that I have used to make these backgrounds. It takes a little getting used to, but you don't need to know a thing about what equations to use or anything like that. You just pick one and let it draw and see what it looks like. I have done several and posted them on my Photobucket site, so if you want to check a few more out, the link for that album is:

Now, for the links to the actial software. The 3 free programs I have used are:

1) ChaosPro. The link is ChaosPro Fractal Download Page (my least favorite of three, but still pretty good and has tutorials)

 

2) Tiera-zon (this one is pretty cool - I made several with this one and there are tutorials for this one, too and I even emailed the guy who wrote the tutorial and asked a question and he got back to me. So that was a good thing). Anyway, the link for this one is: Amazing Seattle Fractals. Actually, this whole website is great. To get the link for Tiera-zon, scroll down the page and you will see a whole bunch of Fractal Program links under the heading "Windows Fractal Programs". Not all of them are freeware, but it will tell you. But, please, go check out the gallery and feast your eyes on some amazing images. The link for the Galleries (and there are quite a few of them) page is:

3) Fractal Explorer. You will find the link for this download on the same page as the Tiera-zon through the Amazing Seattle Fractals website. This one is really good too and quite powerful. It also has tutorials, though a little hard to find, so the link for the tutorial page is:

If you need any help, let me know. If you check the tutorials, that will help you kind of understand how they work and how to change the look. When you open your first fractal, don't be disappointed. It doesn't look like much, until you start changing equations for the starting fractal, and then apply filters, transformations, color palettes and change some of the variables in the equations and then things really start to happen. But once you read the tutorial from theAmazing Seattle Fractals website, I think you will see what I mean.

 

Also, for those of you who have gotten GIMP or are thinking about getting GIMP, there is a small Fractal generator in that program. I have used this too. It can create a pretty cool background using some of the basic principles of fractals. May be any easy way to start, but I find it rather limited. The dedicated programs have a WHOLE lot more power and options.

 

Well, now that I have rambled on yet again for days, I'll post and let you get to the Fractal programs. Enjoy and please show us what you come up with. I'm curious to see what you wonderful artists come up with. The only limiting thing about fractals, as far as I can tell, is your imagination, and we all know that the imagination is, like Celine's talent, limitless.

Thank you, Ann. I appreciate your feedback. I vacillated on whether or not to change her dress color. I redid this (I didn't delete the black dress, I just selected it and made another layer and changed the color on that one). I am reposting this with the black dress and the correct spelling of "colour", since that is how it was spelled on the album. I would like your opinion on the change.

Sofie, I think you meant to say "I can't figure it out", right? Which one did you try? Would you like some tips? It really is easy once you know where to go to change the look of the original fractal (boring Mandelbrot) by changing the equation, the transformation, the filters, the real and imaginary numbers and the color palette, among other things. You might find Fractal Explorer easy to work with and it has a ton of functions you can change to generate a new image from the original Mandelbrot. Tiera-Zon is pretty decent, too. I can help you with either, if you're interested. I'm still learning and experimenting, but I am blown away by some of the images that pop out after just changing a few parameters. I will be more than happy to help, if you want. Just let me know.
