Celine's songs that "trascends" languages

Hi, I've been studying English for quite some time now, but before I could

understand it, there were some Celine songs that really got into my soul,

having no idea what they were saying...like "Think twice" (the song that drew me near her) or "IACBTMN".

Now, this same thing happens to me with her amazing French songs...

Well, at least some of them,like "Rien est vraiment fini" or "On sest aime a'acuse" (sorry for my french writing).

Don't get me wrong, I'm not just talking about "liking" a song, but feeling something deep inside, as if you knew what the lyrics are saying...without actually doing it.....

I was just wondering if you have your own "cross over" songs, and what they were.

"Pour que tu m'aimes encore".

This song hit the top of the charts in Angleterre---it's so powerful, even for those that don't know French.

But I suggest learning it!

Les oiseaux du bonheur is i guess by far, her most beautiful french song imho. this one is a classic (1984), but became an instant favorite of mine. very sad melody., great lyrics (btw if im not mistaken, the english title of this song is Birds of Happiness). i have no idea if this song was released though.

There are a lot of these songs, for me. I'm learning French so I understand bits and pieces of most songs, but some songs you can just feel so much emotion...so yeah, I know what you mean...

Sous Le Vent, Cherche Encore, Vole...there are so many!

Well actually i don't know french but there are songs that even though i don't know the meaning a feel something strong, like the first time i listen to s'il suffisait d'aimer... i cried, i don't know why but i did. Pour que tu m'aimes encore, comme coeur froid and c'est pour vivre give chills i feel a connection some kind of feeling.......

I forgot about another song I love in french, "lettre de George Sand..."

I don't understand what the song is saying, and still I can feel so much sadnesss and love in the way Celine speaks first and sings later.

I know most people skip it from "D'elles" but is one of my favs on that album

I totally get that kind of feeling. I guess its the melody or the expression in Celine's voice that makes you feel something even though you don't understand a word. On sest aime a'cause and Aun Existe Amor come to mind for me.

For me some of the French songs that touched my soul even when I didn't know the meaning of the songs are:

- "Retiens-moi"

- "Regarde-moi"

- "Delivre-moi"

- "Apprends-moi"

- "Le vol d'un ange"

- "En attendant ses pas"

- "Sous le vent"

- "L'abandon"

- "A cause"

- "Les temps qui compte"

- "Je ne veux pas"

- "Cherche encore"

 

There are MANY others, but those are some to begin with.

I think this almost goes without saying... for fans who listen to both her English and French recordings [either with or without knowing the language], are moved in some manner, simply because they're a fan.

 

I understand what everyone is saying though... I can remember being a kid and listening to D'eux and eventually SSD and being so moved... now that I've been able to learn more about the language and what the lyrics are saying, the songs are all that much more moving.

 

 

Some of those wonderful tracks for me include:

 

Je Sais Pas - so raw and full of emotion

Vole - there's a strong love and commandment in that track

Pour que tu m'aimes encore - undoubtedly one of the best love songs ever written, hands down

S'il suffisait d'aimer - in the tradition of strong love songs, it's simple and amazing

Je crois toi - This track is almost haunting to me

On ne Change Pas - She's telling such a nice story

Zora Sourit - Makes my heart soar every time i listen to it

 

And this is only hitting on the two albums I previously mentioned.

well, I'm really not that familiarized with that song, I must have heard it a couple of times, max, so no, it does not traspass any frontiers for me, no psecial feeling at all.

Without hesitation... Celine's performance of Le blues du businessman at the Olympia in Paris.

It was 1995, I was 12 years old, knew no French and had only just discovered Celine through Think Twice and The Colour of My Love.

I was on holiday in Turkey and was amazed to find a dusty cassette of Live a l'Olympia for sale in a market. I bought it foolishly thinking that maybe the songs would be French versions of The Colour Of My Love (I was young!).

 

I will never forget the first time I heard Le blues du businessman. It was the first track on Side B and I was mesmerised. Her voice was so powerful and made the hairs on my neck stand on end. I had no idea what the song was about but it effected me and stayed with me forever. About four years later I decided to translate the song and even though it is from a musical with quite corny lyrics, I was amazed to find the song actually meant something to me. The whole idea of spending you life doing something you don't want to do, of wanting to write or create art without ever succeeding was very significant to me, and still is. Maybe on some unconscious level I understood the song through Celine's voice and that's why it effected me so much... I don't know... But it is a very important song for me and to this day I believe it is Celine strongest live performance. I love it!

Maybe because I'm a nerd, but as soon as I ever heard a "new-to-me" french recording, I ALWAYS translated it or researched it online, just to get a better idea of what the song was about.

 

No fan can ignore her French recordings; these are songs in her native tongue and much more passionate than almost any of her English recordings could ever be. The emotion in each syllable of every word in her native language love songs is so provocative and full of power, even on the tiniest of notes that there's no way these songs could ever be put into any other language with an expectation of the same type of feeling and mood.

 

If you ever find yourself with a spare moment, listen to a song, read the French lyrics on her website, and Google the translation for the song. Sit back, listen, and read the lyrics, both in French and English. You will soon find yourself amazed that you're beginning to understand more and more of the French language, and you will also appreciate the heart that she sang into each of those songs. Have fun with it!

I agree with you in most of what you've said roberry82. I really believe her french songs are way more passionate and heart-felt

On the other hand, what I intended to state on this topic, was the fact that some of her songs have the power to get into our hearts without doing all the things you said...the research and translation of them

I'm not referring just to her french songs, but songs in any language that is not your native tongue.

It happend to me with "Think twice" back in 1993, and many other examples.
