sgcpc Posted April 27, 2008 at 08:13 AM Posted April 27, 2008 at 08:13 AM there again Bruno, these numbers were published by Sony or Celine's entourage, they're not reliable and there is no way to verify if they're accurate. what pisses me off is, people here are trying to help you, and you are not appreciate this! and secondly, why are you so concered about the numbers anyway? bellamy has already gave you the threads, and you should go and look at it, people here all beive in that threads, and why do you need comparison anyway? give ma a break okay?! Ray Posted April 27, 2008 at 09:52 AM Posted April 27, 2008 at 09:52 AM It's not important really, is it? Céline, Madonna, Mariah, Whitney they are all on top. What does it matter who has sold a few more? When Mariah comes on Oprah she is hailed as the most succesful singer of all time. When Whitney joys in a few weeks later she gets that title. Then Madonna has a new album and she is claimed in the papers to be the best selling female artist of all time. Next Céline is hot with a tour or an album and tv and papers shout that Céline holds the record. The media just loves to throw around with those credits. The truth is: they are all unbelievably succesful! Hope they ALL continue to do so. Now let's talk about love... PEACE! Nikosn17 Posted April 27, 2008 at 10:28 AM Posted April 27, 2008 at 10:28 AM I think the most reliable thing we had was "Celine Dion - 25 ans d'amour Magazine", published in 2005 to celebrate Celine's 25 years of career. According to that magazine here's what Celine sold: ... All in Total: 184.7 I really don't know how they got to 200M. It is called promotion for the new album. Quote
nick1975 Posted April 27, 2008 at 04:15 PM Author Posted April 27, 2008 at 04:15 PM All right you guys, believe me, I want Celine to be the best selling female artist just as much as you do; but most of all, I want it to be true. And for that, we need numbers compared to other artists' numbers. Madonna fans and her record company are saying that she is the best selling female artist, and their point makes sens because of the longevity of her international carreer. But they have no proof either. What pisses me off is that nobody (record companies, associations, etc.) has dared to come out with any real numbers, and they make us believe that Celine is the best female seller without any proof. I would be very insulted if some jerk comes out one day with real numbers proving that Madonna was always the best selling female artist during all this time. Wouldn't you be? Quote
Your_Su_Phu Posted April 27, 2008 at 05:24 PM Posted April 27, 2008 at 05:24 PM (edited) What pisses me off is that nobody (record companies, associations, etc.) has dared to come out with any real numbers, and they make us believe that Celine is the best female seller without any proof. I would be very insulted if some jerk comes out one day with real numbers proving that Madonna was always the best selling female artist during all this time. Wouldn't you be? I disagree. Celine's and Madonna's figures for one are so close to each other, even their certifications, that I find nothing wrong with record labels promoting each as "the best selling" or whatnot. The difference is trivial. Even if Mariah's label will still only dare to claim that she's sold 160 million records, they still also claim her as the best selling female ever even though madonna and celine's labels claim much more (200 million albums alone for both). I'm going to repeat something that I've often heard said, and that is that many labels who claim their artist is the best selling is outright lying - because they ONLY have figures for their own artists anyway, where would they have gotten the figures of other labels' artists to prove that their artists sold more? it's all just inflation and promotion. I agree with Ray wholeheartedly, the truth is that Madonna, Celine, Mariah (and I'm not going to include Whitney cos she's even further behind) are 3 of the best selling females and who knows if one huge hit album from any of them can change the current ranking or whatnot, because the differences in their sales are quite close They're all huge sellers. If you're really desperate for comparison figures, the following is the best I think that's available. I'm no chart/sales expert at all but I peruse through a chart/sales community called UKMIX filled with chart experts who (in the chart analysis section) try to tabulate believable sales without inflation or whatnot. on that forum it is predictably true that many disputes have arisen over whether celine-mariah-madonna is the best selling female, but there's one topic in particular dedicated to tabulating their sales based solely upon certifications: http://www.ukmix.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=41261 Yes this is hardly official and just original research by random individuals on the net or whatnot, but lemme tell you why I think it's relatively more reliable. The info posted in that specific thread is based on certifications which the posters have to be able to back up with an official source. It is at least possible to prove if a certification is true, but to prove a random figure thrown out there? not so much. Yes, certifications don't represent total sales as the sales are often higher but they can at least provide a guide for us to see who has sold more. Keep in mind that even that thread is under construction and hadn't been updated recently (doesn't include recent/total sales of Taking Chances or Mariah's new album, etc.)I think it's a pretty accurate guide. All and all I just find it strange how you're going about it. The sales figures they gave you are the best we know as fellow amateurs who don't work for Sony. If we don't even have "true" sales for our own Celine, how do you expect us to get real sales for Mariah or Madonna to compare? I doubt we'll ever get true total global sales for any of them since record labels will lie. Edited April 27, 2008 at 05:33 PM by Your_Su_Phu Quote
Bellamy Posted April 27, 2008 at 05:44 PM Posted April 27, 2008 at 05:44 PM They didn't update FIY and Deux plaitunum awards on Europe:My friend sent this email to IFPI yesterday: "I need an information. In the page of IFPI site » resources » Awards » Certification Award Levels: « http://www.ifpi.org/content/library/platim...awards-2005.pdf » we see that the album, D'eux is 8xPlatinum in Europe and the album Falling Into You is 9x Platinum. This information are also on the book that IFPI released last year. But in the page of IFPI Platinum Europe Awards « http://www.ifpi.org/content/section_news/plat_all_years.html » we don't see these albuns with the awards that the book says. Can you tell me if D'eux is 8x Platinum (or 5x Platinum) and if Falling Into You is 9x Platinum (or 7x Platinum) in Europe? Thanks!" ------------------And the answer was:------------------ "Dear Mr Silva Your enquiry has been passed to me. Falling Into You is 9xplatinum and D’eux is 8xplatinum in Europe. They both reached those levels in 2003. Kind regards Michelle Stevens IFPI Market Research"And didn't update the platinum awards in USA, SA, Canada and China. idroveallnight Posted April 27, 2008 at 05:53 PM Posted April 27, 2008 at 05:53 PM That's why Sony in 1998 encouraged people to buy the LTAL album by limiting the number of the MHWGO single at 500,000-600,000 units. That's damn genius! Now that's good strategy. Quote
nick1975 Posted April 27, 2008 at 07:23 PM Author Posted April 27, 2008 at 07:23 PM ok, I had seen that, but I'm looking for real GLOBAL album numbers. IFPI is the only source there is and the numbers on Wikipedia come from IFPI.Now, are these numbers accurate? I don't know. Who told you those figures were from IFPI? And I still always see it commonly repeated in many official sources that there is no meticulous soundscan-like entity to calculate global sales, even if IFPI is supposed to "represent the recording industry worldwide", so is the IFPI even 100 percent reliable? and btw your wiki link no longer works. Yes, it doeshttp://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federaci%C3%B...onogr%C3%A1fica Quote

And as I thought, the page claims to have the stats provided by IFPI but there is no link to any page on IFPI that shows those figures. There are just links to the main IFPI page. How typical Edit: also someone has recently changed the figures as well, they're not the same as those on the front page of this thread. but then again, that is wikipedia for you. You're right! Thank you for letting me know!Well, I am glad these figures are not reliable because Celine seemed to be the fourth best female seller on this list. Now, what are the chances that IFPI will give me the correct numbers if I write to them? Zero? Or will they answer me with a list? do you know if anyone has ever tried to get that information directly from them? Quote
