Bell Posted April 26, 2008 at 10:27 AM Posted April 26, 2008 at 10:27 AM I have always wondered why is that "Pour que tu m'aimes encore" is so different than the English version, "If that's what it takes"For me, PQTME describes a very sick kind of love, definetely about loversIf that's what it takes, onthe other hand, describes an unconditional love, more like a Mother/son kind of relationship. What do you all think?I think you're probably right. ITWIT is more like love between, like you said, mother and son or sister and brother, or friends but it's not like a feeling between lovers. Quote 16 YEARS A FORUM MEMBER

Jour053103 Posted April 30, 2008 at 04:13 PM Posted April 30, 2008 at 04:13 PM Both of the songs are different but I have to say that I like PQTME more than If that what it takes........ though I do listen to if that's what it takes.... grobandion Posted May 6, 2008 at 10:00 PM Author Posted May 6, 2008 at 10:00 PM what about the background vocals in "If that's what it takes". I think they add something fresh to the song, which was necessary to "lighten" the theme of the song. "pour que tu m'aimes encore" doesn't have those Background voices and sounds more dark, in a way...just the way the song is Quote
ex0h Posted May 12, 2008 at 01:51 AM Posted May 12, 2008 at 01:51 AM I don't speak French or understand it (a few words here and there maybe) so I don't understand PQTME, but I love it a fraction more than ITWIT.I used to love them equally, but I think, reading this thread, has changed my mind. grobandion Posted May 12, 2008 at 04:50 PM Author Posted May 12, 2008 at 04:50 PM I suggest you visit this website: www.celine-dion.netYou'll find there almost all of Celine's french songs translated to English. It's great, since I don't speak french fluently either. saludos Quote

WallsDoTalk Posted July 28, 2008 at 07:45 PM Posted July 28, 2008 at 07:45 PM I agree...those two are completely different, which makes it more appealing to me to want to listen both of them, coz they deal with different matters.I agree that ITWIT speaks about a mother-child relationship or something, the other is more passionate Quote
CelineRules! Posted July 28, 2008 at 08:31 PM Posted July 28, 2008 at 08:31 PM "If That's What It Takes' is from a stable relationship standpoint. Where you're so in love. "Pour que tu m'aimes encore" is about a relationship that has ended, and the person singing will do anything---magic, anything to make that person love them back. "Tu m'aimes encore" is much more powerful. No doubt one of Celine's finest.I couldn't agree with you more! I also prefer the french version, because I think it has a deeper meaning than ITWIT. But I also like the added background lines in ITWIT, just like I liked the added lines in Aun existe un amor. It adds depth and body to the songs... I don't know if I explain this right... Quote

I prefer PQTME too.Probably because of the way that the words sounds in french. It's more passionate, sad, strong, romantic ... and for this reason I find it deeper. This lyric is so damn touching. I feel all the disperation of a woman who would try the impossible to have her man back, and that's so emotional!!! Amanja Posted July 29, 2008 at 02:04 AM Posted July 29, 2008 at 02:04 AM I think PQTME is better because Celine said before that there is something when she sings in french that she doesn't have when she sings in english and that was true for this song. I found the english version kind of awkward and really cheesy Quote
WallsDoTalk Posted July 29, 2008 at 01:00 PM Posted July 29, 2008 at 01:00 PM I wouldn't say cheesy, I like ITWIT, it's just that I like PQTME best I love the fact that Celine kinda knew in before hand that the song wouldn't be so good in English, so decided to take a different twist....softer lyrics, more "conventional" and those background vocals that lighten things up Quote

And I don't think the lyrics are cheesy in English. They speak of a deep friendship to me: 'you got me through hard times, now I'll be there to help you up' But if you would say: choose... Then I would pick PQTME in the blink of an eye. I love it so much more in French. And to quote another French song: I think Je sais pas works perfectly well in English... I like both version equally. Hilda Posted July 29, 2008 at 01:50 PM Posted July 29, 2008 at 01:50 PM my favourite has always been if thats what it takes - it sounds punchyer but im sure the lyrics are more supreme in the french version seen as that was what it was originally written in and it was her biggest french hit and such a massive success so it deserves to be the one that wins. But i do like the anglo production better. Quote
WallsDoTalk Posted July 30, 2008 at 04:56 PM Posted July 30, 2008 at 04:56 PM I don't see it as a competition between them...more as a comparison on the different kind of love they represent.I like to think of them as two completely different songs Quote
jtsoundtech Posted July 30, 2008 at 05:01 PM Posted July 30, 2008 at 05:01 PM Hey folks, it's enlightening to read the discussion of the song, since I don't speak French, and couldn't tell you what the Pour Que Ti Me... means. The ideas are interesting to think about though. From reading your posts, I've decided that I like the message of the English song better. However, for some reason, I like the French mix better. I don't know, I can't describe what makes it sound better to me. The drums and percussion sound just a bit softer and less punchy, and it's generally more elegant. Humberto Gatica, Celine's vocal recording engineer, mixed both of them, but, for some reason, they came out a little differently. Does anyone else notice the difference? (One of the things I love best about Celine's recordings is critiquing the mixes). Quote
grobandion Posted July 30, 2008 at 05:04 PM Author Posted July 30, 2008 at 05:04 PM Off course, and I believe they intended it that way.PQTME is more intense (just like the song lyrics) and ITWIT is more cheerful/light, just like the lyrics.BTW, you can check out www.celine-dion.net for translations of PQTME, and there's also a thread here with many (and I mean many) translations as well Quote

For me, the most important music differents are that Celine's voice has more reverberation in TWIT, and in PQTME, from 2:02 (the second refrain) till the end, they add a strumling instrument, don't know the name, but I think it's not a guitar. It makes the music a little bit 'playful', TWIT doesn't have this instrument. And there are more differents like backgroundsingers and more electric guitar sound. Quote
SensationalCeline Posted July 30, 2008 at 08:55 PM Posted July 30, 2008 at 08:55 PM Well I'm happy that the english covers of Céline's french songs are different, cos otherwise it wouldn't be very creative But I don't agree that PQTME talks about a sick kind of love I think it talks about devotion, that you will do anything for the person you love! In this respect, ITWIT doesn't really differ... only the lyrics are different Thank you! I was thinking the exact same thing. PQTME isn't sick, it's very moving and touching. stevo Posted July 30, 2008 at 09:20 PM Posted July 30, 2008 at 09:20 PM When I sing the song I sing both versions intertwined- Baby that's what I'll give pour que tu m'aimes encore... But I love PQTME more because it is how I feel. When I saw her sing this in London this year I was 3rd row and I was wearing the PQTME tshirt- you might have seen a pic of me- and I was crying and she just stopped and looked right at me and pointed and smiled as she sang- dans le froid, dans le flame...I was nearly sick. It's my favourite song in the World- I've always loved it but now it crushes me but I listen to it many times each day. Like the speech on the LILV cd about JTE which essentially can have the same meaning- I love you still- the speech she makes-I believe we love truly, deeply only once in our lifetime...a love so deep, it goes on despite the disappearance of the loved one...I love you still. Awful. Amazing. Quote
Hilda Posted July 31, 2008 at 10:24 AM Posted July 31, 2008 at 10:24 AM arr thats nice! it was my fave celine song for a long long long time as well. but because of over playing by me i now hardly listen to it haha. I think thats one of the reasons i like if thats what it takes more just because we're always bombarded with pour que tu m'aimes encore coz of how important it is in celines repetoir. so listening to ITWIT is just a little bit different for the ears haha.
