grobandion Posted April 24, 2008 Posted April 24, 2008 I have always wondered why is that "Pour que tu m'aimes encore" is so different than the English version, "If that's what it takes"For me, PQTME describes a very sick kind of love, definetely about loversIf that's what it takes, onthe other hand, describes an unconditional love, more like a Mother/son kind of relationship. What do you all think? Quote
neilg Posted April 24, 2008 Posted April 24, 2008 What do you mean, 'a very sick kind of love'? Quote
grobandion Posted April 24, 2008 Author Posted April 24, 2008 don't get me wrong, by sick I mean unhealthly. She says she's willing to change her personality, to use the services of witches from Africa....you know what I mean? Quote
Your_Su_Phu Posted April 24, 2008 Posted April 24, 2008 (edited) i prefer pqtme by far. if that's what it takes is typical love song though they share same melody Edited April 24, 2008 by Your_Su_Phu Quote
DjCeline Posted April 24, 2008 Posted April 24, 2008 i believe PQTME has a deeper meaning. you may think it is about a very powerful and overwhelming feeling, or that, as you said, it is about, a very unhealthy and addictive love which makes the person who feels it to want to change totally so that she/he could be loved again by the object of her affection (who might still be in the relationship or who might have left).on the other hand, if that's what it takes only gives me the sensation that it's a classical love ballad about a very..in love person who would to anything for the loved one. i prefer, by far, PQTME. Davey84 Posted April 24, 2008 Posted April 24, 2008 Well I'm happy that the english covers of Céline's french songs are different, cos otherwise it wouldn't be very creative  But I don't agree that PQTME talks about a sick kind of love I think it talks about devotion, that you will do anything for the person you love! In this respect, ITWIT doesn't really differ... only the lyrics are different Quote http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v75/daveyh84/incognito198701_zpsaaootxh1.jpgRick, ik hou van jou voor altijd!A New Day... has come 28/29 April & 2/3 May 07Antwerpen 13 et 14 mai,Paris 24 et 25 mai, Amsterdam 2 juinet Arras 7 juillet Chances Taken!!!How Do You Keep The Music Playing? - Celine Opening Night March 15th, March 16th
rathnakumar Posted April 24, 2008 Posted April 24, 2008 (edited) I agree with you... And PQTME has such profound lyrics! I loved the fact that those words kinda make us feel, whoa, it's kinda creepy what that woman would do to make him love her back... But there's a beauty in the way the lines are written.. The expression is AMAZING! And I think the video perfectly captured the sentiment and Céline, I must say, did a great job in that video... She kinda gives an expression in the video when she sings "FALLAIT PAS TANT DONNER..!"where she looks like this obsessive, innocent and a crazy person... That one expression was precious... She totally acted like how someone who'd do voodoo and stuff would act! She's awesome!!! Edited April 24, 2008 by rathnakumar Quote https://www.instagram.com/p/C8RuNzZPAdh/
maceta_biloxi Posted April 24, 2008 Posted April 24, 2008 (edited) They are different for sure but you have to consider the market of those songs, people from French-speaking countries think different then people in english-speaking countries. PQTME is like a love spell and ITWIT is very love-devoting as Celine said before is about giving it all, risk it all and trying it all for the one you love.... both songs address those feeling differently but the bottom line is the same. celinecolombian Posted April 24, 2008 Posted April 24, 2008 What do you mean, 'a very sick kind of love'? I agree with you Quote
grobandion Posted April 24, 2008 Author Posted April 24, 2008 Celinecolombian, i have already explained what i meant by that to Neilq. Most of you have understood what I was trying to establish, the subtli difference in the way things are expressed in both songs.I just feel that "ITWIT" could be about an unconditional love between a mother and her child. It cannot be applied to PQTME, where the tone is much more agressive and sexual. Quote
Lawna Posted April 24, 2008 Posted April 24, 2008 I love both songs very much! PQTME is a beautiful song which to me describes a love that will go to the ends of earth for a person no matter what it takes so that their loved one will love them for ever. ITWIT describes a love that is devotional and to let their loved one know that no matter what they will be there for ever because that's how strongly they love them. So in a sense it is almost the same strength in love I guess, regardless, both songs are beautiful Quote They go crazy for you because they know you're true. --Celine Dionhttp://i830.photobucket.com/albums/zz226/Congenialdiva/myspacelink.jpgFollow Me on Twitter!Visit Me on Facebook!
idroveallnight Posted April 24, 2008 Posted April 24, 2008 If you were to literally translate the words from PQTME into English the lyrics wouldn't flow as nicely as they do in French. Celine's French songs obviously convey deeper connotations and meanings that are too hard to express in English. If ITWIT was written in the same context as PQTME, I don't think too many people (other than the fans here, of course) would take the time to appreciate the depth of those lyrics. Quote
aicee Posted April 25, 2008 Posted April 25, 2008 Although I don't understand the PQTME I still love it the same as ITWIT. Specially the part of the song " I love you all my life" Quote

Alex_Incognito Posted April 25, 2008 Posted April 25, 2008 "If That's What It Takes' is from a stable relationship standpoint. Where you're so in love. "Pour que tu m'aimes encore" is about a relationship that has ended, and the person singing will do anything---magic, anything to make that person love them back.  "Tu m'aimes encore" is much more powerful. No doubt one of Celine's finest. Quote "People pay 20-25 dollars to see you."- Céline Dion, 1990

scorp82 Posted April 25, 2008 Posted April 25, 2008 I think both songs are great! Even though I don't understand French, I prefer Pour Que Tu M'aimes Encore. For some reason, I feel that the song in French has a special charm and conveys great meaning. I am not saying that the version of the song in English does not have charm, but I feel the version in French is just priceless. As far as the meanings of the songs are concerned... I think we all have reached some consensus here. Pour Que Tu M'aimes: I know the song is about loving someone so much a person would be willing to do everything and anything to have that love once again. The person embodied in the song, according to the lyrics, would chant the magical verses of African witch doctors, become a queen, or turn herself into gold just so that the other person would love her once again. Although we should not take the lyrics too literally, I think the lyrics carry great depth and meaning. Then again, how many of us here have fallen deeply in love and then perhaps that relationship comes to an end? How many of us would have wished to have that love again? At the time of that specific break up, how many of us would have tried everything and anything to recover that love? I think all of us can relate! If That's What It Takes: The meaning of the song is so much different than Pour Que Tu M'aimes Encore... Perhaps the song could not be translated literally into English. Otherwise, the song would lose some substance. So, the version in English saw some evolution. When I think of If That's What It Takes, I think about two people in love. According to the lyrics, "You're the bravest of hearts, you're the strongest of souls / You're my light in the dark, you're the place I call home / You can say it's all right, but you're breaking up inside / I see it in your eyes / Even you face the night afraid and alone, that's why I'll be there ... " However, even though one party in the relationship is very strong and brave, this person is going through something. This person feels afraid and alone and is in despair. The person singing the lyrics tells her significant other that despite everything, she will be there for him to help him get through his tough time. She is willing to do everything and anything to love and support her man through thick and thin and help him through his problems. In this case, Celine is singing about the woman being the stronger one and the man she's in love with as the party who needs support and someone to lean on. Quote
Jacqui Posted April 25, 2008 Posted April 25, 2008 I don't know why they're different, but I recently learned the words and meaning to Pour Que Tu M'Aimes Encore, so I notice the difference too. If That's What It Takes is kind of more universal, it could be about any kind of love, and how far someone would go to be there for the person they love. Pour Que Tu M'Aimes Encore is more...I wouldn't have said sick...but it's more passionate and desperate. I never thought it was about a creepy woman or anything, though.I love both. But after hearing Pour Que Tu M'aimes Encore live...I think I like it better. Like Celine said, a lot of people can relate to the feeling of loving someone THAT much Quote
Prince Whiskers Posted April 25, 2008 Posted April 25, 2008 The lyrics of PQTME are some of the best ever in contemporary music. How the abandoned lover expresses her desperation is just soooooooooooo French. lol Quote http://cdn.webecoist.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/modern-pet-solo-blown-glass.jpg
Bumble Posted April 25, 2008 Posted April 25, 2008 PQTMAE is definitely Dion's masterpiece when it comes to lyrics. The song is written in perfect Alexandrine . The story conveyed is definitely creepy, depicting a woman on the verge of being a complete lunatic. And celine does a perfect actress performance in the music video.ITSWIT is definitely not that good compared to the original version. I know some people don't but to me it says evrything you need to say "about loving someone so deep".  Top songs both of them! Even though this is apparently a rough translation, I think the person who translated this actually captured the meaning of the song very well. This is why Pour Que Tu M'aimes Encore and If That's What It Takes are so different. The true meaning of the song would have been difficult to capture in English, so the English version took a different meaning. Celine even said she had considered recording or actually recorded L'Amour Existe Encore in English, but the final product did not embody any of the song's original meaning. Instead, Celine recorded the song in Spanish as Aun Existe Amor, which is a beautiful song.    http://www.leoslyrics.com/listlyrics.php?hid=TF9Ak4l7em0%3D  "So that you love me still"  I understood all the words, I understood, thank you. grobandion Posted April 25, 2008 Author Posted April 25, 2008 I also feel that Celine should make more "translations" from her FRENCH songs into English. The outcome has been amazing so far: "Have a heart", "If that's what it takes", "I don't know", "Fly", "Et Je t'aime encore"....I believe they would be hits, like "Immensite", "A cause", "Je cherche l'ombre", "Contre Nature", I don't know, a lot of amazing songs Quote
Black Kitten Posted April 26, 2008 Posted April 26, 2008 not one of my favorite tracks, but i adore them both, equally. Quote
