How do you pronounce 'Celine'?

This is for all you Francophones out there! I noticed that Rene pronounces 'Celine' as /Ce-lin/ As in the end isn't pronounced /Ce - leen/ like how she's usually called. I also remember watching an interview with Deborah Cox (who is Canadian) back in 1997/98 and she said it the same way - /Ce-lin/ not /Ce-leen/ and I was like please get her name right for goodness sake!! So is it a Canadian way of saying the name or is that the correct French pronunciation?

well for a start its Céline lol wiv a é not a e

and if there is an é not an e you make it sound 'ay' not 'e'

so her name is pronounced 'say' - 'lean' :)

I thought I'd heard members of her family pronounce it, "Seh-Len".

It still annoys me when I hear people say, "SEELEEEEN DIONNNUH!"

lol..that was catchy!!

Yes, you're right! I just checked the VH1-behind the music, and Celine pronouce it "Ce-lin". :)

Maybe it's not the same in Canada and France?! :hmm:

Yeah, it's the first one she says. In the full clip she tells you that you pronounce Dion with almost a Z sound at the start. Like Sellin Dzion. Interesting stuff!

a good way to learn Celine's own way to pronounce her name:

I'm Céline Dion

Wow, that was really cool!

Which song is that pianoplay in the end from?

... I just couldn't figure it out myself?!

In France it's pronounced Say-lean but in Québec you're more likely to hear Say-lin - at least that's my experience.

Fun stuff people...thanks for the smiles as usual. The french Canadian way (if you were to pronounce it very clearly, slowly, and purposefully would be Say-lean as others have already pointed out. I think Celine herself over time has started to pronounce her name in a more anglophone/american way, and same with her family; that's why a lot of you are hearing Ce-Lin instead. Cheers, T.

I'm from Quebec and my first language is French. The "right" way to pronounce it according to our accent is more like you just said Say-lin...and not "lean"... I think you call it a short vowel and not a long vowel (as in lean). It might be more like the "i" in "pit" or "rid". There's also a difference between French from France and Quebec. The "i" in Celine is more tensed in France and more relaxed in Quebec.

For Dion, someone said the "n" was silent and it's true. In French we have nasal vowels that you don't have in English like the "on" in Dion. It would be easier with a phonetic transcription. I hope it's clearer now. :)
