Fans piled into near-capacity on Monday night for a date that was long overdue. “Tonight we’re going to make up for all that lost time,” a smiling Celine Dion announced to the BOK Center. “You’ve been waiting for this since last November … and so have I!”

 

The show was postponed last year when her doctor gave her a dictum to cancel shows or risk permanent damage to her vocal chords. But Monday night, it revved to life with a video introduction to “I Drove All Night,” and Dion racing down darkened streets in a convertible … then rising from the center of the stage to blinding strobes as greeted ecstatic fans.

 

She moved gazelle-like in 5-inch silver stilettos and a thigh-skimming lavender and opal-sequined dress to the end of the runway and even high-fived fans during “The Power of Love.” Silver-haired seniors and young men danced in front of the stage, singing every word together.

 

At one point, the video screens turned to visions of fire as a Latino drum beat rose from Dion’s backing band. Four sets of dancers also rose from below the stage, dramatically dancing as they segued into “Eyes on Me,” Dion belting out yodeling, sensuous lyrics.

 

This is Dion’s 11th headlining tour, this time in support of her 2007 release, “Taking Chances,” and directed by famous concert director Jamie King, who has also worked with artists including Madonna, Mariah Carey, Prince and Shakira.

 

She played from her roster of hits, including “Taking Chances,” “To Love You More,” “Alone,” “It’s All Coming Back to Me Now,” “Shadow of Love” and even a soul medley including “Lady Marmalade” and “Respect.” The presentation was huge. Her voice was huge. The crowd was pie-eyed as she stood alone and sang, a capella, “All By Myself” to a roaring crowd. Dion definitely knows how to play to a sold-out crowd.

 

Concert tracker Pollstar estimated total concert ticket sales hit another record in 2008, rising more than 7 percent to $4.2 billion in North America. A lot of that money went to touring acts including Madonna, The Eagles, Bruce Springsteen and Dion. Dion earned an estimated gross of $236.6 million from U.S. ticket sales, the site reported.

 

Dion’s Jan. 3 concert at the Spirit Center in Kansas City, Mo., became the highest-grossing concert in the arena’s history with a gross of $1.6 million-plus and a sold-out audience, reported Dion’s official Web site. There was also record attendance for a recent show in Miami, Fla., and throughout the star’s home country of Canada. From Tulsa, her tour will hit St. Louis, Montreal, Denver and more before jumping the sea to Africa, Asia, Australia and Europe.
