When Mottola got word of it, he countered by doing the same for Destiny's Child's Bootylicious. Destiny got #1 and Mariah had to settle for #2. We Belong Together got an early #1 because Mariah released a free remix to itunes which also counted for sales. But the most underhanded was what she did to Celine in 1996. Always Be My Baby debuted at #2 below Because You Loved Me. Mariah was so furious she went to Sony and demanded they delete the BYLM single. They bowed down and the next week Mariah was #1. It was one of the last favors Sony ever did for Mariah. Quote

This is one of the oldest schemes in the music industry. In the 1950's and later, it was known as "payola"or "pay for play." It was routine for artists to have to give money to radio stations so that they would play their music. Most artists would have to do this. I think there was some big scandal with all of this many years ago, so it's supposed to be illegal now, but it would not surpise me if some of it still goes on today. Quote
