Celine's Voice Throughout The Years

When I listen to people sing who have been around for awhile, they're voice for the most part sounds like it did ten or 15 years ago. Like Mariah Carey, her voice sounds exactly the same as it used to. However, with Celine, if you were to go and play her Unison album, it would be very difficult to realize that's the same person. It seems like it's such a gradual change that you wouldn't even notice it if you played all the albums chronologically one after the other.

So which voice of hers do you like better? Personally, I think it's SO much better now. It sounded more much nasily back then. Now it's this perfect, pure sound. I also think she can sing both higher and lower now than she could before. I mean, her low notes in New Dawn are insane. That's almost as low as I can go, lol.

Her new album is good way to growing up her technical to sing because it has many kind of song !!

But for do it LIVE, she should rock to shout :band: without care of her beautiful voice (like every rock singers did)

It's her 80s voice I like the most! Raw... no pressure, no strain. Crystal clear.

Touring too much, vocal break, Vegas and exhaustion are taking their toll on her timbre, unfortunately.

Still, her voice sounds just perfect when she sings in French, how do you explain that? Maybe French songwriters want something else than proving how huge her voice is. Just want to let her sing... listen to "Taking Chances", then go back to "D'Elles" - the voice is clearer and more at ease on the French one.

This statement is completely wrong. Mariah's voice (as whitney's) has changed dramatically. She used to have a crystal voice that turned into a total mess of whispers, lack of breath, and wrong notes.

I was going to say the same. A L'olympia is also an album that I just find "Unbelievable". Her voice was so crystalline, I just couldn't believe that! Well, I have no words to describe that album.

Oh, and one more thing: I think all you may already know, when she was about 16, 18 years old, her voice was much more high! Songs like "Une colombe" she sung as any normal song.

Love comes to those who believe it...

Personally, I don't think Celine's voice has changed that much. When she sings her old songs, they sound like if she'd sung them ten years ago. It's her music style that has changed. You can hear a slightly different tone in her voice at times, but that is just good. It's changed for the better. When Celine sings "Taking Chances" live I don't think it sounds so good as if she were singing some other classic song, but if she sings "My Heart Will Go On" it sounds amazing. Her voice is clearly still there, she just chosen to go a slightly different path than she used to. You can also listen to "My Love" and see that her voice is still there, no doubt, it's just more subtle than before, I love the change. Hopefully she will continue to produce new (English) albums with different touches and tones of things she haven't done before. She can pull it off quite well, I know it.

Celine's voice still has that power but it's no longer the sharp voice that effortlessly sang WDMHBN, TPOL, ABM, Declaration of Love and the like. On the other hand, the present Celine has more emotional depth and definitely more stylistic versatility. She might have been brilliant on FIY but her voice there bordered on the mechanical and the predictable.

Ok it's true that voices change through the years. Mine has changed and it will be different when i'm old. Celine's greatest change was from the 80s to the nineties. Remember she was a child. But there are other facts to take into account.

First the recording studios and the improvement of sounds and so.

Then the tone Celine sings. We all know that the 90s was the age of powerful and high tone ballads. This has changed now. Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston even Madonna Sang beautiful high tone ballads like Celine in the 90s. I´m sure they could still do it now but unfortunately they are out of fashion. Now tones are lower for all songs. I think Celine still sings powerful ballads but the tone is not as high as the ones she sang in the nineties. However let me tell you that I´ve found a very childish voice in the new song "I Got Nothin' Left" When I listen to it I find similar tones to the Celine of the 90s. It's like if the song belonged to an album from that age. Very curious.

Her voice has changed and it's normal. Personally, I like most the way she sounds in her self-titled album 'Celine Dion' - in 'If You Asked Me To', 'With This Tear', 'I Love You, Goodbye' and especially the leftover 'Send Me A Lover'. I also agree with what songbird said about Celine's French songs.

The best voice Celine had in 1995 when she was recording D'eux.

It's enough if you compare live performances from 1995: Paris, "J'attendais" and 2007: Taking Chances X Factor...

Oh God, Celine Voice changed so much and is such a pity! In 1995 her voice was higher, fresh, clear and young. Now it's getting worse... her live performances aren't as powerful as they used to be in the 90's.

There isn't a singer on the planet that sounds exactly the same later in their career as they do in the beginning, so why would anyone be crazy enough to expect that in the first place. Saying Celine's voice has changed is as redundant as saying the sky is blue. DUH. She has been singing for 25 years, and obviously it's not going to be the same. You can talk about peaks and valleys all you want but the real question is does her voice still "do it for you?" That's all that matters. Her range is still incredible, and there will surely always be differences from record to record, and concert to concert. The day her voice starts becoming unpleasant is the day we need to start having a discussion, but at this point it's just not happening anytime soon. My god how much we take for granted being Celine fans. I shudder thinking to be a Whitney or Mariah fan. You wanna talk change, lets talk about those voices! ;)

Celine's voice surely changed through all those years, but I think it's a natural change that happens in all of us too. Definitely her voice became better, more powerful and with unimaginable high notes, so crystal clear... But for Christ sake let her not ever do that again to herself! She could have destroyed her vocal chords there in Vegas. Above all she knows what to do with her voice and how to protect it. Edited by celinemanic

What are you talking about ? Mariah's voice has changed much more than Celine's... her voice has been changing every 1-2 years...

Celine's has also changed of course , but it's not that much.

I wholeheartedly agree with what somebody here said about "I Got Nothin' Left". Celine's voice on that song sounds soooo vintage. So stunningly clear, high and solid. Should she record an RNB album, it should in the free-flowing ballad style of IGNL, not those Timbaland songs which are beneath her vocally.

In the eighties the rough diamond was shaped to be the technically perfect singer of the nineties...

Right now she sings the way she feels and isn't feeling the need to reach perfection like she did before...I think she's still able to do it if she would focus on that alone...but she won't do that any longer because her priorities changed. But there are many recent examples when suddenly this diamond voice pops out again...I was listening to the live version of Caruso yesterday...it was incredible, I am convinced it's still there and that she can let it come out when she wants to and feels good vocally...

yup i definitely noticed the growth, was thinking the other day how her voice from things like la voix du bon Dieu et al. are just so vastly different from now. but of course, seeing how she's grown up and all. but even from like.. ATW times! it's just so much more flexible now. probably a huge part due to her decision to just let loose with her voice these days. Anyway i love it best now. :)

Live a Paris voice = incomparable

One of her weakest performances ever. Nasal and strained. All the way through. But she was sick that day so I can forgive her.

Like Mariah Carey, her voice sounds exactly the same as it used to.

You gave the worst example... I have some bootlegs from her last tour and it's horrible... Even her fans say that...

We all change. I think Celine's voice has gotten a lot stronger.

But I do miss the clarity of her voice from the 1980s. She seemed to give a little extra something then.

To me her voices sounded at it's best during her selftitled album area. But I truly love how her voice is now, so much more mature.

And stop being so bitter Sebabababababbaba, a lot of people say her voice sounded good on Live A Paris, so do I.
