Celine's promo tour was a BIG LETDOWN

NOTE: Be warned. Manuel the Imperious Cat is in a ranting mood.

Somebody wake me up. Celine appeared on a show (DWTS) that attracted 20M+ viewers and yet TCH is espected to sell just 80-85k copies this week?! Are you kidding me??????

TCH's mediocre performance as compared to Josh Groban's "Noel" is so EXASPERATING. Look, Josh didn't do as much promo as Celine, the album was released last October without much fanfare, it hasn't spawned a no.1 holiday single like "I'm Your Angel" and one would think that those who purchased this album would not have minded picking up TCH as well. Of course, "Noel" is perfect for the holiday season but TCH HAD NO BUSINESS WHATSOEVER selling below 500,000 units BY THE END of the first 2 weeks. On Celine Dion's name alone, this album should have been giving "Noel" a run for its money THESE PAST SEVERAL DAYS. I didn't and still don't care much about OH and Miracle under-selling but TCH??? This album full of strong songs and vocal performances? This album with inputs from Ben Moody, Linda Perry, Ne-Yo and John Shanks???

We're aware that Celine dragged her a-- from one show to another but what did she do OR what was she advised to do? Sing the same dang songs over and over. One of them is a cover of a well-known song and the other one simply sounds uninspired in a live setting. On top of that, Celine sang her signature tunes, those bloody old songs FOR WHICH her overextended Las Vegas show was created!!! It seemed like they didn't really know whether to promote the new album as "modern Celine" or "same good old Celine", a dilemma which I find ridiculous since we know that the album has so much VARIETY! I know it's all moot and academic now but how I wish she sang these new songs on the following shows:

1. Oprah - This Time, TJTWIM (to show the edgy, pro-woman side of the album), AWTBI (to represent the ballad queen Celine), New Dawn (Oprah viewers are big on the spiritual, self-empowerment stuff, aren't they?)

2. Ellen - the energetic FA and CFTF with a great live band

3. AMAs - band-accompanied FA or an edited version of IGNL with Ne-Yo

4. DWTS - EOM (What a nice dance no. this song would have inspired.)

5. The View - This Time (bec. of its political theme), an unplugged rendition of My Love or Surprise, Surprise (for the younger and older viewers alike)

When the writers' strike ends and Celine gets a chance to appear on shows like Leno and Letterman, I hope that she or the people around her make better decisions as to what songs she will sing. At this point, the album's only realistic chance is Mr. Chuck Taylor and the ideas that we on this board have brought to his attention. I'm holding my breath , are you as well?

If you made it to the end of this post, thanks for your patience. Your reactions are welcome. :flowers:

i understand ur frustration. same with me as well...

even though taking chances is a great song to listen to, it was the wrong choice for a single. and when she performed it live for some time, it was simply flat and shaky. she should have performed other songs live that is true!

i hope that our reactions will have some effect on celine and her management and maybe that album could hang in the top 10 or top 20 for a while...

For me, there are only two MAJOR things she did wrong on this promo tour:

1. Old songs  . The concerts are one thing but there's no excuse for singing it on most of these shows where she was supposed to introduce wider audience to her new album and sound. Ok, she performed TC and Alone on most of the shows but why in the world would she choose BYLM and MHWGO AGAIN!!!!! Why???? I think a lot of people who wanted to see her after a long time and hear some new songs were little disappointed hearing the same old songs all over again. C'mon Celine, aren't you getting tired singing it almost every night for the last five years. So many amazing songs on the album and she choose those same old she sang almost on every show she has ever done in the last 10 years  .

2. There were many shows where she barely mentioned her new album or the next years tour and she kept rambling on about Rene-Charles and her personal life. How many times did she say those things in the last couple of years?? I actually don't mind when she's talking about it but to talk about it ALL THE TIME and not to mention the album the she's supposed to promote is beyond me. And in case of Oprah, if she didn't brought it up in one of her questions, Celine should have done it herself.

well we all know that for hEr, it's not about selling the new album but embracing her new self. and with that comes stories about maturity and RC, because personally, the sales don't matter so much to her as her own.. internal change the album only represents. And where before it may have really, really mattered to her to promote her albums cos that's what was her life's priority, she reAlly doesn't care as much about that anymore and the closest thing to a promotion she can muster are the words "a little bit more edgier" quickly followed by an exposition of how she's found her new self, how she does this for her whole family, how being a mother is her best job in life, how she climbs down the ladder,... Face it people, to Celine herself it's no longer about the music, and this album is going to have to find a way to sell itself.

I really dont think the album did as abad as what most people are saying!

she was in the top 5 in most countries in the first week.

I think she has done more promotion for this album than what she did for

A new day..Live in LV & Miracle! (world wide promo anyway)

In my oppinion i believe the promotion she did was mainly for her tour..

Becasue as she left each country the tour dates were announced,

Even though i would have loved for this album to have gone to number one

like many fans would have, It just depends on what dates the albums are released

I believe that the date they released the album on was wrong! But Only for the fans

Celine has a massivley Buisy schedule and she has to try and fit things in where she can

and if this is the only time she could have released the album & Done promotion

then TBH i dont really care,, the main thing is we as fans have been waiting so long for

some new material and now we have it! Some people just expect to much!

I dont think doing a couple of old songs made a huge difference. Celine has a lot of casual fans who will simply buy the album because they like the new single or wont. I think performing older songs is common place for all artists. Although we always assume people dont wanna hear BYLM or MHWGO because we dont but in reality MHWGO still sells well on itunes and BYLM was a big hit. Same at the concerts many people will buy tickets for her shows that will not buy the new album because they will want to hear her signature songs and she will sing a good few of them.

I do agree that she should have talked more about the music rather than always about RC but thats Celine and she has never really spoke about her music but a lot of it comes from who is doing the interviews. When she has been asked about the album she has talked about it.

I think the problem with this album is simply that it didn't have a hit single and it didn't receive enough airplay. TC is a grower it takes a few listens for people to embrace it. I still think it was an excellent comeback single if it had been a hit. If radios had played the song people would have heard it more and more times. The problem is that it has such a soft start that I think radios threw it out early on. Although we can see that the radios who did play it a lot and had faith in it found that the listeners loved it but others just didn't give it a chance not realizing that it does kick into a great radio record after the first verse and chorus.

We need something with a great intro that programmers will like and feel a "hit" factors at the beginning. A hit single will sell the album no problem. people have to like the songs for an album to keep selling.

I never even knew the song the orchestra was playing........

I completely agree with you! They went on the wrong direction to promote this new cd.

The power of TC is in those new powerful songs but in all the shows she went sha sang just TC, Alone and some old ballad. I'm happy she were everywhere and be able to see Celine in tv like the old beautiful days, but I'd like the album to get the succes it deserves.

Another big mistake they're making is to wait so long for the second single. Nowadays after 2 months a song is old and if u want to sell an album, especially a new one, you have to make the singles come out one after the another in a very short time. January is too late for a new single, now it would be the right time, it will get people attention again and we all know that under Chrsistams time people buy more, this would be the perfect time to point to the top of charts, but Celine is doing just the opposite. I hope things are gonna go better in the future cause there are songs on this album that deserves to be known by everyone making Celine big again worldwide!!! :flowers:

Celine doesn't care that much anymore? But she was practically on every show! And remember she said that she had more passion for music than ever! Maybe it was mainly Rene's decision for her to go from one show to another but what was so difficult about mentioning the involvement of people like Moody, Perry and Ne-Yo? What was so difficult about explaining wherever she was why TCH is her FAVORITE English- language album? It is not about the sales. It is about showing the album's worth. How can we not expect a lot when this album is very strong? It's not like OH with the B-sounding songs or Miracle with the weak voice! Celine recorded these wonderful songs and made sure to look great on the album photos and during the promo campaign, and then what, wittingly or unwittingly undercut the potential of that extensive promo tour with poor song choices? Of course, this is all just my opinion.

She/They don't care about album sales anymore. More important is to sell tickets for her world tour concerts. The album ist just a vehicle for that, very sad!

I agree with everything you said! This promo has been frustrating as can be, and lets not even start with all the lipsynced performances. Everything you mentioned was spot on! Still love her to death though!

When not promoting - she's crap. When out there promoting - she's even more crap. Poor Céline!

1. Céline singing the old songs to also attract te people who might not enjoy her new style as much, along with the new crowd with a new song.

2. It's the holidays. People buy a cd that says Noel quicker than a regular album. If a regular album sells well, that's great, but it's understandable

3. There's a tour coming up. I wouldn't worry too much.

Of course, I don't really care about the numbers here, so that might be why I couldn't care as much as you.

My biggest gripe is that the promotion hasn't had much to do with her new album. I mean every interview is the exact same as it always is. We know about her siblings, we know about her parents, we know about her son, blah blah blah. You can't market this album with lines such as "...There is the Celine you know, and the one you're about to discover..." and then give the people the EXACT SAME CRAP. The same post Vegas baby talk, the same Rene Charles talk, only with slighty new stories, but the same hair conversations. Nothing about working with Linda Perry or Ne-Yo, nothing about the new songs, except a watered down 2 minute karaoke live performance cover song from a rock legend band, and the leading single that is "same old boring Celine" for the first 2 minutes of the song. That WILL NOT get people's attention!

Taking Chances is radio friendly but as numerous people have mentioned they talk about the album being edgier to attract new people, and then give us the same old Celine performing her older hits (which I love, however it's not going to sell the new album or give people a different opinion of her). I think if they never came out and made a big deal about how the album is a little more risky for her, and didn't call it Taking Chances it wouldn't have been such a big deal, but they came up with that whole marketing angle, and have not followed through with it at all.

And I love how the OP put it that she talks about being more passionate than ever and how this is her favorite English album and we get several completely uninspired performances of the same song, as well as numerous uninspired interviews about the exact same stuff. I just think it should have been approached so much differently. Her new found "passion" is just not coming out. Her entire stint in the UK was just depressing.

First of all, I just have to say that your freaking cat is soo annoying! ok now about Celine, I hear your pain completely and I share the same vision you do for her to promote her album but there is not too much we can do about it, she is making choices and they are working just "ok". She has sold soo much over the years with an "ok" promo, I cant imagine what she would sell if she had a over the top promotion.

Posted
A fact is the album is great, people who have it love it and the critics are quite positive. I mean this kind of promotion is overrated. It's just for people who are too lazy to move their asses to find out themselves what's new out there on the music market. I can totally understand her being bored by all this marketing. When Barbra Streisand was on Ellen to promote her last album she said - when Ellen asked her why she didn't do so much promotion - that her work was done when the album was finished and now she handed it to the record company so they could do with it whatever the wanted. At first I thought she's quite arrogant, but now when I see Celine like a desperado running from one crappy show to another, I think she was right.
Posted
Yeah - I seriously can't believe she only sang two songs from the entire album for EVERYTHING SHE WAS ON!!!!! EVERYTHING!!!! It was a very big let down. I loved the Oprah show - because they dug deeper with some other fun things. But nothing else really stood out. I am so sick of hearing Alone and Taking Chances, and that's dissapointing because they're great songs....but she should have prepared MORE to sing. At least one more!!!!
Posted (edited)
Agh. I know how you feel. I wish she would have performed more songs rather than TC and Alone over and over again. :pinch: It's pressure too... By performing only TC and Alone, they're basically depending on those two songs to promote the ENTIRE album... and that's not working out. Pressure on the songs! Someone from Sony should join this forum. :glare: Edited by celinerific

I don't really consider the songs in Taking Chances album to be amazing. FIY, LTAL, ANDHC were albums that has really amazing songs.

ONe Heart was not really a good album.

But Taking Cyhance sis better than One heart.

I even think that what's make "Taking Chances" still on the charts is because people also know "Alone" is also included in the album.

As fans, we were probably the only ones who watched her sing the same two songs on EVERY SINGLE PROMO EVENT buuut for many people it didn't seem as repetitive. Non-fans probably caught her on two or three of this appearences so it didn't seem like "oh crap not that song again". I agree though that more promo could have been done. Her new CD is like a new Celine which I feel is more towards younger audiences...so thats where she should have promoted herself. Much of the Ellen, Oprah view audience is the same as the adult contemporary audience. Most of them would already buy Celine's CD. She needed to do more myspace promo...have her songs on greys anatomy, mtv, vh1, itunes...she needed to get the younger crowd wanting to buy her cd. Those are the people who are like "oh celine dion eww only old people like her" haha. Her performing with Ne-yo at AMAs would have been GREAT promo! However, lucky for us Celine's name sells itself. Shes still on the top ten and thats great! But if you look at who she's losing against....alicia keys, highschool musical etc...its all cds that YOUNGER crowds will buy. They are the people who buy CDS more than ANYONE. She could have gotten twice the sales because this album is good for adult contemporary crowds and teenie bopper crowds. Also...the lipsyncing did not help. Her choice or not she lost respect from a lot of people because she CAN sing and they tear lip syncing apart all over the radios...the soup etc. That right there ruins the promo.

When has Celine done any of the things that many of you expect? Let's go back to THE COLOUR OF MY LOVE----what did she talk about? Rene, Rene, Rene.

I think it shows that she's not phased by her career.

Guys, she doesn't NEED to promote. We should be happy that she still does!

If anyone should take the blame for this album not selling it's her fans. People will sell out her concerts but won't buy a new album? That's just really, really stupid. BUT - I think TC has a very good chance of being recognized by the Grammys and a nomination and/or win will really push sales sky high. Can you imagine if Madonna had released her album as orignally scheduled? My lord, TC would be trampled. Realistically, selling almost half a million albums worldwide in the first week is NOT a failure anymore. The industry has just changed too much for even the best artists to be super succesful sales-wise.

It is disappointing after how hard she worked to promote this album, as well as how hard we worked to support it. I still have faith that this album will continue to sell, and we can’t give up hope after the first week of sales. She may sell more when people buy it as a Christmas gift, or when her tour kicks off.

When she went on the talk shows to do the interviews, they didn’t ask her about the new album. She could only answer what she was asked about -- and they wanted to know about Vegas ending, and René-Charles. There was nothing anyone could do about that.

They should have had her perform different songs… at least for certain shows. Like someone said, she could have performed “Eyes on Me” on Dancing with the Stars - that would have been perfect! She performed “My Heart Will Go On” one too many times. I could understand it on Oprah, because it was a fan dedication - but other than that - they should have had her sing new material - because that is what she was spending nearly a month of her ‘vacation’ promoting.

Let’s hope the next single is a good one, and they seriously take our suggestions into consideration. All we can do is support her as we always have, and hope for the best.

Let me just get these things out of the way:

1. I never used the word "crap" in my post bec. that equals total disaster. I might have been disappointed with the song choices or with what Celine said or did not say, but I have to give her credit for her vocal performances which were generally competent. Besides, did anyone catch me joining the phalanx of critics who took Celine to task for her X-factor performance or predilection for lipsynching?

2. Somebody here finds my cat "soo" annoying? Sorry to break it to you fella but The Dancing Cat will reign forever. The worst nightmare ever, you bet.

Anyway, what I find to be a pity is that during her promo blitz, Celine fell short of showcasing TCH as the colorful, vibrant and multi-dimensional album that it IS. For its adventurous spirit, TCH is Celine's 1f&4t in English. In fact, it's adventurous enough that it would not be totally impossible for Celine to vouch for the album BOTH on Larry King and TRL!

Celine's sched. was too hectic? She didn't have the time? One would think that she has known about these songs for months and she was the same woman who performed an extra song at the 1997 Oscars on very short notice. It's either she was advised by the people around her to sing the same songs again and again OR she simply didn't want to do it.

It was a bit of a disaster in the UK I have to say. Big backlash due to all the miming. Also I'm finding all the performances of TC a little dull.
