Celine's Accent

There's something I've always noticed about Celine's accent. Does anyone remember back in the Unison days when Celine spoke in English her accent was really thick. Her English really wasn't very good at all. Now when she speaks she does it so comfortably and her accent has gone away so much. Obviously you can tell English isn't her first language, but her accent isn't very promenant anymore.

The other thing is that when she sings, she has NO accent whatsoever. Before I even knew who she was, but still heard some of her songs, I totally thought she was from an English speaking country. Even back in her Unison days when her spoken English wasn''t so great, she still had literally NO accent when she sang.

Right.

She's speaking so right now! :)

She has a beautiful accent and is very understandable... I just wish she thought about every single word before speaking out, like when talking about Kara DioGuardi she was like "some times... I love her to hate her..." and I was like... WHAT? lol--- but her accent is really ok.

That's what I've always loved about her. Even though English isn't her first language, you can't tell when she sings. I thought she was English-Canadian for quite a while before I eventually found out she was French. I think she speaks pretty good over all actually, she's evolved a lot.

I like her accent. I can totally still tell she has one, Imo it's still quite thick actually, but I love it coz it's really unique. I haven't ever heard anyone who sounds the way she does.

I think that accent endears her to some while it annoys the hell outta some. Depends on what you think of it. :)

She clearly has an accent, but like many foreigners I know who have English as their second language, they speak with an American accent also. I don't know whether it's noticable to people living in the USA, but to me, Céline has a French-Canadian/American accent. It sounds so good!

I'm also quite proud that I can distiguish her accent when she speaks French! I can detect that she is not from France - for a long time, I wasn't able to tell the difference between French and French-Canadian accents. My mother isn't from the UK, and she found it hard for many years to detect where about in the UK people come from - accents in the UK are very distinguishable; Northern, Southern, London, Gloucestershire...! I didn't know how my mother found it so hard, but I'm happy now that as a non-native speaker of French (although not fluent), I can hear Céline's accent.

I have noticed that when she appears on American television programmes, Céline uses phrases like, "they cheered big time", which is more common in the USA than the UK. There aren't many people I know who use phrases like that. I think though, that she has such an excellent command English which is why she uses these Americanisms so comfortably. I think it's a credit to her, and her teachers of English that she can speak so well - (she pronounces all of her Ts!), when I find it a struggle to understand many native speakers! :P

Celine accent is amazing. It's so cute.

But it's true it has become less Frenchy in the past years, but that's what you get for living in he States. :P

And it's also true that she has (extremely close to) no accent when she sings. Before, my friends didn't even know she was Canadian. They all thought she was American. But I told them she was Canadian and they were all "REALLY?!" and I said "Yes... She's also French..." and they're were all "REALLY?!"

Being an American, I can totally hear her accent, as can I heart a British accent. But no matter where you are in the world, you're going to have an accent to someone, whether or not you are a native speaker.

There are CLEARER accents,

Example:

People living in the midwest USA (eg: mid Illinois) have a clearer American-English accent

People living near Tours, France in the Centre/Loire valley have the clearest French

I know when I am in Canada or France, I CERTAINLY have an AWFUL sounding French accent! lol

Now Rene, he has a VERY good American accent! VERY, VERY good.

Yes definately, his English is much better than Celine's. I wonder why that is.

AMO CÉLINE CADA VEZ MAIS!!!

I'm sure Rene's is better because he's considerably older than Celine and has put his english to practice more.

Well obviously Celine's English has gotten better since she has been speaking it now for about twenty (I think) years.

I can still hear some of the French accent when she sings and I think it's kind of cute.

She still has her French-Canadian accent when she speaks which is nice. I hope she does not get TOO Americanized! ^_^

Rene’s English is better than Celine’s, which is because that he could speak English well when he was a college student, according to Celine’s authorized biography released in 1997, and Rene is so intellect smart, which is part of the reason why Celine fell in love with him.

Celine always manage to speak with such a great flow...and very natural and she so sure of what she says and what it means, which is very important when you speak other languages,I think.I always thought she was American-until I heard "Pour que tu m'aimes encore"...

I speak English,a little bit of French and right now I'm learning Italian-for many reasons.

To me,English is a very boring language(I'm sorry) and I hated to learn it in school, but I only learned it because it's so important(unfortunately)...

But English is very easy to learn,so it's a good language in that way-it doesn't take a lot of effort to learn...

I think Céline still has an accent but her English is very fluent. You can sometimes hear her accent even when she's singing. BTW, I adore the way she sings the word love!! OMG, I get chills when I just think about it! :in_love: :in_love: :in_love: :in_love: :in_love: I don't want Céline's accent to change 'cause it's so unique and part of who she is.

I'm American and even I think English is boring!http://smileyset.com/temp/PRINCESS/laugh.gif Though most people argue that English is harder to learn then all other languages. I can speak French and a bit of Spanish too. French is my favorite language to speak. Smooth as silk.

Bellamy, few days back I was watching the news and saw that in Beijing some students were learning Sanskrit. I was totally amazed by that cos Sanskrit is also one heck of a tough language (i gave up learning that in the 7th grade :giggle: ) but I can't undertand why Chinese is not being taught in schools here in India whereas French, Japanese, German, Russian and Sapnish are the common foreign languages

Back to the thread, I wonder how Celine would sound if she would record in Chinese. She sang in Japanese so I'd want her to sing in another oriental language.

I agree with Celinerific when she says that people can't believe that Celine is "French-canadian" cos even here people think that she's American and her accent is almost nil when she sings

oh she does, especially live - her accent is more promenant than ever i think now coz shes concentrating more on getting the song out more than her pronounseation.

I love her accent, ive noticed its changed tho, in a weird way tho, its more english sounding....like the odd word will come out very brittish, its weird a little bit like madonna almost haha. like when she sang 'planet' (they call earth) on X Factor it sounded reeeally english. She also sounds a liddle bit more newyaawk as wll on the american side of it.
