Bell Posted April 29, 2007 at 08:08 AM Posted April 29, 2007 at 08:08 AM It doesn`t really matter if Celine is a US citizen or not. For me, she will always be a Canadian. Quote 16 YEARS A FORUM MEMBER
maykonprincess Posted April 30, 2007 at 12:13 PM Posted April 30, 2007 at 12:13 PM That is actually incorrect. You don't all of a sudden become a citizen when you have a child. You have to apply for it, take a variety of tests, and than pledge to get it. The rules for citizenship have changed since 911. And, before you can apply for citizenship you have to live here for at least 7 years yes, but that does not mean you all of a sudden become a citizen. Celine could hold a permanent resident card, but not be a US citizen. But, i really think this is a personal question for celine. Actually once u have a child in the U.S. u become a citizen. I think also if you've lived here for seven years you become a citizen. So yes, Celine must be a citizen. Quote
idroveallnight Posted April 30, 2007 at 12:54 PM Posted April 30, 2007 at 12:54 PM No, she's not a citizen. She's pledged her loyalty again and again to Canada and says that it will always be the blood the runs through her veins. People in Quebec are very sensitive about this subject and they criticized her for singing in English before, so keeping her Canadian citizenship is one way to remain true to them. Quote
Clari Posted May 1, 2007 at 04:21 AM Posted May 1, 2007 at 04:21 AM I agree.. I think it's a personal choice. She probably can... but she won't. If someone has a child they do not become a citizen of the US, only the child is a legal citizen of the US. (If only it were that easy to become a citizen.) People can apply to be a "permanent resident" after 10 years you can apply for citizenship easily. My mom so far hasn't applied mostly because now becoming a citizen cost over $300 just to fill out the application. :/ Really? Wow, maybe you're right because there are so many ppl having kids now a days...$300? Kind of pricey for an application. Well good luck! I hope your mom will get the finances for that soon Thanks! It's crazy how much prices have increased, I wouldn't be surprised if it's even more. So many new laws are coming into effect, they do anything to take your money. A replacement for a stolen permanent resident CARD cost over $120 dollars about five years ago. lol at this topic totally going semi off-topic Quote http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v226/CelineSmiles/hamster.gif CLARiSSA Xxx... DianaLuts Posted May 1, 2007 at 04:29 AM Posted May 1, 2007 at 04:29 AM i am pretty sure that one does NOT become a citizen by having a child in the US. the child is a citizen thou. people can apply for citizenship after being a permanent resident for at least 3 years. normally you have to wait 5 years but under special circumstances it can be as little as 3. Guest Reuben Posted December 25, 2008 at 09:12 PM Posted December 25, 2008 at 09:12 PM Actually once u have a child in the U.S. u become a citizen. I think also if you've lived here for seven years you become a citizen. So yes, Celine must be a citizen. This is not true anymore, it was back in the 50-60s, maybe 70s. It changed as they didnt want people coming to the US, giving birth and staying because of their child. I have one or two friends who were born to Swedish and English citizens in the US, they aren't entitled to American citizenships. Only if you are born to American citizens are you entitled to citizenship. I was born in an American family in Europe, but still it took me 2 or so years to get my citizenship from when I applied (bureaucracy) to get my citizenship, even though I was entitled to it from birth. Rene Charles would probably have to apply for American citizenship like all others. Quote

Cesdra Posted December 25, 2008 at 10:25 PM Posted December 25, 2008 at 10:25 PM as for RC, since he was born in the US, Céline and Réne had the choice over his citizenship. He would definitly be eligable for US citizenship but if Céline and Réne chose him to have Canadian citizenship only, that's what he has now. You can have dual-citizenship in special cases, such as RC's. Céline would have to apply for US citizenship jut like anyone else. I doubt she would give up Canadian citizenship. I never would if I had it. Shania's son was born in Switzerland but he has British-Canadian citizenship. Usually you, or your parents have to decide which citizenship you have. Germany only allows dual-citizenship in very special cases. The law has just been changed here. If you are born in Germany you are not necessarly a German citizen. If your parents aren't German citizens, they have to decide if they want you to be German or not. You can't have both. Quote

carrie09 Posted March 21, 2009 at 03:53 AM Posted March 21, 2009 at 03:53 AM My Uncle is from Spain and has a driver's license from Spain when he comes to the US he has to have a sticker (i think it is) from the DMV stating that he is legal to drive a automobile. That could be what Celine has. Quote
MJaque Posted March 21, 2009 at 04:56 AM Posted March 21, 2009 at 04:56 AM *shrugs* how could she have a drivers license here if she didn't? to get driver's license you don't have to a U.S. citizen. but then why Celine needs to become U.S. citizen, she can come and go with her Canadian citizenship, and also let's don't forget that she is CELINE DION - the one and great - which gives her an advantage! xl.dodo Posted March 21, 2009 at 12:35 PM Posted March 21, 2009 at 12:35 PM haha. I know one thing for sure.. Céline hasn't got a dutch citizenship.. It doesn't matter if Céline has only the canadian citizenship or also the U.S citizenship. Honestly I don't think Céline WOULD WANT a U.S. citizenship.. She's so proud to be a canadian.. She probably has a 'green card'. Celine is a Canadian and always will be.I don't think it would be terrible for her to become a U.S citizen but in some ways I'm glad she hasn't.I know she is incredibly proud to be from Quebec and the people from Quebec are proud of her. What ever she decides she'll always be a Canadian first and everything else second..... Quote

If your parents aren't German citizens, they have to decide if they want you to be German or not. You can't have both. RC is American by birth since he was born in Florida, USA. He would have been given an Florida State Birth Certificate and would have been able to get his American Social Security Number at the same time, legalizing his existence in the US. Both Celine and Rene could have retained their Canadian citizenship and applied for either work visas here in the states, or, pushing it, applied for dual citizenship. Celine Dion would never be able to work here in the states, claim American federal taxes, pay her employees in American dollars, legally own homes in her own name, possible have a driver's license in the state she resides here in America [here in the USA driver's licenses are issued by state government, not federal] or be able to stay here for as long as she did while the Vegas show was running. Now a lot of those things are more geared towards business, and I think it's safe to assume it all goes through whatever business, LLC or DBA they're using here in the states for their business, all for financial reasons. Now all the personal stuff like Celine paying federal taxes on her income, having a driver's license or being able to call the USA home for the entire run of AND... would require at least a US Work Visa, which typically needs to be sponsored by an American-based company [maybe Sony or Caesars'] and has an exprition date, upon which the Visa would need to be re-applied for and approved by the government. The day that Celine Dion gives up her Canadian citizenship for any reason, she'd be all over the news, tv, magazines in Canada and the US and have tomatoes thrown at her in Canada when she returned. She's made such a huge deal out of Canada being her first audience, her first fans, buying her first records, specifically the Quebecois, that she could never give up her birth-rites as a citizen of Quebec/Canada, especially to choose citizenship of the USA. Quote
Annalicious Posted March 22, 2009 at 04:57 PM Posted March 22, 2009 at 04:57 PM Just about the only thing a permanent residence can't do that a citizen can is vote. So unless she has an undying desire to vote in US elections, she has no need for citizenship as the Canadian passport gives you as many travel privileges as the US one. You can even get welfare and food stamps if you're not a citizen, really no reason to be one if you're Canadian other than for political or sentimental reasons. Quote
imaswede78 Posted March 27, 2009 at 05:30 AM Posted March 27, 2009 at 05:30 AM I remember seeing an interview a while ago when Celine said she and Rene had been offered American citizenship for tax purposes but they turned it down because they always want to be Canadian. I do know that Canadians who winter in the south United States can only stay for 6 months at a time before going home for a bit otherwise they are hit with big American taxes. Quote
Scarlett Posted March 28, 2009 at 05:13 AM Posted March 28, 2009 at 05:13 AM Dual citizenship does not mean she gives up her Canadian citizenship. It is interesting to me, however, that they wouldn't choose to have RC born in Canada since it is her and Rene's home country. Celine works so much here it would be much, much easier for her to have dual citizenship in both America and Canada. And, applying for citizenship for the sake of voting isn't a bad idea. Heidi Klum became a citizen just this past year for the sole purpose of voting in the last election. I think it's honorable to care enough about a country to want to have a say in its future. Quote

Also, the US recognizes dual citizenship with most other countries, including Canada. It take several months to over a year for one to become a citizen of any country, never mind the US. I'm eligible for Italian citizenship, but am just procrastinating. Quote Follow me on Twitter: https://twitter.com/patjsully
celine-rc Posted August 16, 2010 at 08:39 PM Posted August 16, 2010 at 08:39 PM I'd be real surprised if she decided one day to get an American Citizenship, since she's so close to her roots here in Québec plus that would probably make some huge scandal type of thing go off and that would be really bad since that is a really sensitibe subject here. I knew RC was born in the US but I just find it surprising that he's born there and not in Québec. They don't live there all year anyway, they come back for two-three months in the summer. Anyway, I'm sure that whatever they decide to do, it's going to be the best decision for them and that's all that really counts. imaswede78 Posted August 17, 2010 at 03:13 AM Posted August 17, 2010 at 03:13 AM I remember either reading or hearing an interview once that people often offer Rene and Celine U.S citizenship basically for tax purposes. But Celine said they would never do that - they are proud to be Canadian. My grandparents have a winter house in Florida and several of their neighbors are Canadian - they can only stay in the U.S for a given amount of time (six months maybe?) before they are hit with some sort of huge Canadian tax. Angel2006 Posted September 5, 2017 at 12:12 AM Posted September 5, 2017 at 12:12 AM Are Celine's kids really American though? I know they were all born in Florida, but someone in this topic mentioned something about the parents being able to choose the citizenship of there child, even if they are technically born in the US? I have often wondered if RC, Nelson and Eddy are Canadian, because RC seems to have very strong pride for his French Canadian roots. His friend's even seem to treat him like he's Canadian. The way RC and John converse back and forth with each other. When RC gave John the Montreal Canadians hat last summer, I think John even referred to RC as Canadian in one of there Live video chats? It comes across as though he's Canadian in my eyes anyways. I know that RC would obviously have a connection to Canada, because of both his parents being from Canada, but I think it goes deeper then that. I just get this feeling from him, that he strongly considers himself to be Canadian as well. It would be a very interesting question for her to be asked in an interview someday. Not that it really matter of course, but it would be interesting to know. 1 Quote
