CBC to broadcast tsunami-relief concert

TORONTO - The CBC announced plans Friday to broadcast a benefit concert for the victims of the Dec. 26 tsunami in South Asia.

 

The event, dubbed Canada for Asia, will air Jan. 13 at 7 p.m. in every time zone, except in Newfoundland, where it will be seen half an hour later.

 

Lasting three hours, the show will feature performances by the likes of Céline Dion, Bryan Adams, Rush, Blue Rodeo, Jann Arden, and Oscar Peterson.

 

The show will air on television on CBC, as well as CBC Radio One.

 

The public broadcaster is also offering the show as a simulcast to all other TV and radio outlets in Canada.

Canada for Asia will air next Thursday night in prime time on CBC television and radio, and it will feature a who's who in Canadian music and entertainment. Organizers have also issued a challenge to the country's private broadcasters to simulcast the show, which will include Tom Cochrane, Blue Rodeo, Bryan Adams, Anne Murray, Rush, Molly Johnson, Oscar Peterson, Jann Arden, Barenaked Ladies, Bruce Cockburn and, in a special segment direct from her Las Vegas stage venue, Celine Dion.

The program, called Canada for Asia, will be hosted from CBC's Toronto broadcasting centre by sportscaster Ron McLean, comedian Rick Mercer and actor Sonia Benezra. It will feature a contribution from Celine Dion, taped prior to her performance that evening at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas.

I wish they would broadcast it on French tv too... Like with the telethon after the terrorist attacks in 2001, they did broadcast that at TV5. And I could see it here in Holland! Does anyone know if they took out 'If I could'? Because she sang 'In some small way' with the 'If I could'-background, with the tree and things? Or did she sing 'In some small way' only one time, specially for the broadcast at CNN?

Fred Nicolaidis, the creative head of CBC-TV Variety, said there would be a minimum of pre-taped segments, indicating Dion's contribution from the stage of her Las Vegas show will likely have to be recorded for logistical reasons.

I hope JP will cap it for us.

Rush, Barenaked Ladies, Bryan Adams and Celine Dion are among the artists who will take part in the three-hour Canada for Asia concert, taking place Thursday (Jan. 13) at the CBC Broadcasting Centre in Toronto. The event will air on CBC television, CBC Radio One, MuchMoreMusic, CMT and MTV Canada, co-hosted by Rick Mercer and Ron MacLean.

 

Dion will join in via satellite from "A New Day," her resident show at Las Vegas' Caesars Palace. Other performers include Blue Rodeo, Bruce Cockburn, Sloan, Oscar Peterson, Daniel Lanois, Tom Cochrane, Jann Arden, Anne Murray, Molly Johnson and the Tragically Hip's Gord Downie. Author Margaret Atwood, hockey commentator Don Cherry and "Trailer Park Boys" star Mike Smith will also take part.

 

Donations, which will benefit World Vision, the Canadian Red Cross and UNICEF, will be collected via phone and Canadaforasia.ca.

The live broadcast to be shot in two large, adjacent studios, while also using segments taped by celebrities elsewhere, will be shown across the CBC's various media (including its website), as well as on CMT (Country Music Television), MuchMoreMusic, MTV Canada and the ichannel. Radio stations confirmed to broadcast the show range from CHFI in Toronto and Q92 in Montreal, to Rock 101 in Vancouver.

So we could listen to it through the web, too.

pointless capturing it. its just the performance from cnn according to celinesmaniacs.com which we already have. and there will be adverts on the bottom of the screen for this telethon so it wont be any different from what we have, really.

but celinemaniacs is not always correct. for example, they reported the CNN performance would be I'm Alive before. so we better cap it anyway, in case it will be something new.
