The nightly medals ceremony held in Piazza Castello is a well-done, occasionally stirring occasion, and it was especially so Sunday night, thanks to heavy snow, thunder and lightning, creating a fabulous winter atmosphere in the baroque plaza.

 

And then, there was Whitney Houston.

 

There is a concert following each medals ceremony and Whitney was introduced to a load ovation for her scheduled 9 p.m. performance. And then, nothing happened.

 

For five-to-seven minutes, there wasn't a sign of anyone. (Perhaps Bobby was helping her with, ahem, a bathroom issue.) Finally, the emcee came back out, apologized and re-introduced Whitney. A few minutes later, she finally appeared, wearing an all-white ensemble. She seemed shocked to see the snow, said she had never performed in such weather and asked, "This is the Winter Olympics, right?"

 

Uh, yeah. It is.

 

While ducking frequent clots of snow falling from the stage lights, Whitney attempted to sing some of her biggest hits, but it quickly became clear that the years have not been kind to her voice. And people thought Ryan Leaf wasted a lot of talent.

 

Can't wait to see this one on "Being Bobby Brown."

Well look realistic how do you expect she will sound right now. Right now, she is going through alot and has not found her way yet. I think it is selfish of some fans not be patient and let Whitney go through what she is going through. Everyone knows Whitney can blow, she just has come through the rain. I refuse to give up my faith in her and her talent and I know all things are possible for Whitney. Besides, I am fan for life just from her 10 years of stuff she has done never mind what she is doing now. In her just 10 years she has sung remake after remake better than the orginal artists. Basically Whitney got successful singing someone else song, but way better. Before, we jump on the negative and the defense lets not forget all the good Whitney has given us. We just need to be patient, like Whitney on Diane Sawyer she make up to us.

Only a die hard Whitney fan could take those performances and find something nice to say. One Moment in Time was absolutely god-awful. She spoke the entire song, and tried to belt a few notes at the end and sounded just dreadful. Her voice was cracked to hell the entire time. I am just amazed time and time again at how high her fans still think of her, when her voice has been shot for years, and she continues to get worse. DENIAL. I heard a short snippet of IWALY, and it was about as bad. I want to hear all the songs just to see how bad they were. Oh to be a Whitney fan, her golden years were some of the best, but oh god her worst years are beyond horrible.

But his solo debut will have to wait. Cox says Usher is itching to get back in the studio. And there is the follow-up to Carey's comeback. Not to mention songs that he, Austin and Dupri are polishing for Whitney Houston.

So she is working on a new album after all and it seems as if it's nearly finished. Céline and Whitney will both have new albums out either late this year or early next one. Feels like 1998 again, eh?

Have you seen the concert footage? She sounded freighteningly bad there already. Her fans were clueless at that time.

 

But I agree all the way, she did it, she went for it - the whole world tour, the interviews, her huge success despite the low sales of the album (Mariah and Céline were serlling double as much at that time).

 

I like her, tho. She has a mind of her own, but it's just SO weird to see it now and compare it to what she has done to herself...and how she's now.
