Theirs was a great love story. Theirs is also a great success story in terms of her career. She would never have the made it as big as she is now without Rene. She knows this. It takes a while to get used to your new reality, but I think she is doing well. She would also not have the freedom to be making decisions, branching out, playing in different areas (fashion, clothing and handbag line, FUN...) without the income created by both she and Rene. If he had not set parameters, she would be broke. She has plenty of leeway to play because of the financial cushion accumulated over the years.

Crazy to think that four years have passed today. I still remember that night of January 14, 2016 like yesterday.

I had just got home from my cousin's house and I was with my mom when a group of fans told me the news via WhatsApp.

R.I.P. René, I can't thank you enough for everything that you've taught to so many, including myself, without even knowing.

I can't believe it's been 4 years since Rene's passing. The twins were only 5 and RC was just days away from turning 15 at the time. It's really crazy how fast time flies. I am sure that Rene must be watching down from heaven with pride everyday seeing how strong Celine is and how amazingly she continues to raise their 3 children, while at the same time thriving in her career. I miss Rene so much and I can't even imagine how much Celine misses him. I am sure today is a particularly tough day for Celine and her entire family. Definitely at day were that good old courage will come in handy that's for sure.

While Dion’s late husband René Angélil was synonymous with running her career, Lévesque was actually the Quebec superstar’s first agent from 1980 to 1982. Lévesque’s employees introduced Angélil to Dion by playing him her demo tape in 1981 when they were looking for a record producer. Lévesque sued Angélil in 1984 before settling out of court. In 2007, Dion and her family sued Lévesque for allowing her song “Ce n'était qu'un rêve” to be used in a commercial."

Wow I had not known this story. I thought the story was that Celine's brother sent the tape directly to Rene.

I miss Rene too.
He helped to create one of the biggest stars of all time.
He was a genius.
Celine's talent / determination / work ethic + Rene's vision = perfection.

But I am so proud of Celine for being more fierce and strong than ever before.
She remains so classy and elegant and driven - but she's also discovered other parts of herself that have given her a rebirth since Rene's passing.
There's still so much coming our way as fans.

I was on an Air Canada flight yesterday, and randomly found this film about the history of Quebecois pop & rock in the1960s, called Jukebox. The film is essentially about Denis Pantis, and the business he built in the '60s (Trans-Canada label), which was effectively the birth of Quebec's star system.
Les Baronets were one of his groups, and the film had some footage I hadn't previously seen of young Rene in his element, compete with screaming girls a la The Beatles at the time.

It was really interesting to see the system he came out of and you could clearly see the parallels between that and how he later managed Celine's career. It's also wild how different the industry was then, and amazing how much he has had to evolve in his approach as a result.
For instance, one of the wild things about how they did things back then - Denis would get a list of top UK/US on Mon, he'd listen to the top songs and pick one or two each week, he'd have his songwriter buddy write a French version on Tue, he'd pick and prep the right artist and record on Wed, press the record on Thurs, and it would be out in stores on Fri! And this is all in the '60s, before anything could be done digitally! Just wild.

That looks really interesting! Have you seen “The Wrecking Crew” yet? I just watched it last night, and it was an excellent documentary chronicling the backstory of the session musicians who played on all of greatest pop hits of the 50’ through 70’s.

Basically, these people were an unofficial group of musical prodigies who were brought in to play instrumentals instead of the artists. They sight-read the chords of each song, improvised their parts on the spot within minutes and essentially created the sound of pop music at that time.

While they were paid handsomely, they were very rarely given credit for their work, because the industry at the time favoured headline acts—there was no such thing as a “featured” celebrity bass player, sax player, guitarist, etc.

It continued that way until the Singer-Songwriter craze of the 70’s and Classic Rock bands (who played their own instruments quite well) ushered that style of music out. That was around the same time René Angélil began managing René Simard and Ginette Reno, and shortly after, Céline. A lot of change happened in those years, and even more so at  the dawn of the new millennium to now. It’s pretty incredible that he kept Céline’s career going as long as he did!

At some point Rene would have retired I imagine. If he were alive today, he'd be two weeks shy of 80. So maybe we can imagine Aldo would have started his work about now, or a little earlier.
