I like it when an album is coherent in its production. For me that was definitely the case with ANDHC. With Courage it is rather a mixed bag of everything, both music wise and vocal wise. Her voice sounds cristal clear on some songs and super weird and not esthetic on others.

I totally agree.

As the 2023 Courage show dates come closer, the contract with Resorts World still sits, signed, and the new movie and soundtrack promo beginning, I predict we'll see some of the Courage songs (hopefully including Lying Down and video) up-cycled into a new compilation.

And the digital single is everywhere now, so at least it streams when people shuffle Celine.

Sony probably didn't even know it was out, so they didn't even bother sending it to the Grammys for their consideration.

Seriously though if you see the nominations, the Grammys have become a laugh! Only based on popularity not on quality.

Although I don't think songs off this album are memorable, I think the main issue is Céline's rendtion on most of the songs.

I do like the fact that they/she tried more modern sounds with less "dramatic" style though but sometimes I just want to scream "open your month!".

In her defense, I also have to admit that we have never heard Céline singing so many different english words...maybe my ears are not used to it.

Also, I'm surprised ( or not) that this album got so many goods reviews ( probably the best welcome among all of her albums) and even made the end of year best pop albums lists.
I think that it only shows one thing : the new generation of critics is less demanding. And while I do appreciate a lot of nowadays songs, the last 12 years ( not to go back any further) haven't produced any ( or a lot) giant songs...songs might be good but are all interchangeable.

Why do you think it's forgettable? The streams on youtube and spotify speaks for itself in comparison with her other songs. She should sing those songs with many million views more often so the generations who don't listen to her on youtube and spotify etc get to knowe those songs (like hdamlf, ashes, lmbtl etc). I think to really reach all the generations of her fans, singing the songs constantly in her shows is the only way. And don't stop singing it only because there's a new song out and replace it with one another

I don't believe streams speak for itself in that case. It's not a fair comparison. I mean, HDAMLF is a song from a big Disney movie. It's the first song on the soundtrack, it was add to several Disney playlists on Spotify, some with millions of followers. The DisneyMusic channel on YouTube, where the video was posted, has more than 30 million subscribers. To compare, Celine's channel has less than 7 million. Because of the movie, the song reached places that other Celine songs never did, specially with the poor way her work has been promoted. Same go for Ashes.

Thing is, with the way streams are consumed, usually randomly playing a playlist,if you are add to big playlists you're going to have bigger numbers. But that don't necessarily mean the one hearing it's actually paying attention to it. I doubt if HDAMLF it's more remembered than other songs like Courage or Imperfections by people who likes Celine.

HDAMLF is just one of those songs(according to me) that is from a good film and is popular (stream wise) yet i feel it's known as popular among fans as Ashes or I'm Alive.

It's not a song that you will common people talk about(maybe even fans) when we talk about Celine

I find the "Courage" album a difficult listen to be honest. Yes there are a number of decent songs but on the whole I don't think the album really works. I admire that we got a completely original tracklist and I appreciate we got so many new songs at once however sometimes quality over quantity is better.

It's an album I cannot get through without skipping at least one track and sometimes I'm skipping 3, 4 or 5.

I of course appreciate Celine's voice has changed with age, that's only natural. But, for me, that doesn't excuse poor production or pronunciation. There are genuinely some songs where I have no idea what she's saying and, for me, that's incredibly off putting.

I agree with others who've said that there are too many songs that sound the same. It's (whisper it) almost boring in places. All of that being said there are some gems on the album. The title track is beautiful. I love "Lying Down" and "Imperfections." I also really enjoy "The Chase" and "The Hard Way."

Unlike, for example, "A New Day Has Come", it's an album I rarely return to if I'm completely honest.

HDAMLF is her 8th most popular song on Apple Music, I believe. I think it's one of those songs that can get overlooked/forgotten or underrated in discussions, but it has performed very well. Certainly a moment where Celine reminded people of her awesomeness and relevance. Looking back, it was a good move for her to say yes to the proect.

I’ll still take any song on Courage over Rain, Tax (It’s Inevitable). I want to get in a time machine and stop her from putting that song on ANDHC. Especially considering they chose it over some other gems that were left off the album.

Yes, ANDHC could have done with a few omissions. It's not a "no skip" album for me.

I think the quality of Celine's song choices took a nose dive after ANDHC. I think her French work stayed pretty solid. But her English work just got worse and worse. There were good songs on each of the albums but there were fewer and fewer. And like someone said, on Courage you can barely understand what she's saying. It might just be me but I found "How Does A Moment Last Forever" to be an awful song. The lyrics are way too wordy and there isn't a strong melody like "Beauty and the Beast" had. It was a huge let down for me. Plus she uses that throaty tone to her voice which is very off putting. I thought "Ashes" was a decent song but it's too short. It ends without any real payoff.

Back in the 90s, I used to say Celine could sing the phone book and I'd gladly listen to it. These days, if I wasn't already a Celine fan and Courage was my introduction to Celine's work, I would not be impressed.

Her voice in the 90s is still like listening to the voice of God.

I actually rarely listen to ANDHC. I don’t find the songs to be as timeless. They’re actually very much stuck in the sound that was 2002.

Gems: I Surrender, Prayer, Sorry For Love, Right In Front Of You, The Greatest Reward

I’m Alive is ok. It’s certainly a crowd pleaser.


I find the OH album to actually be better quality-wise.

I wish the entire concept for LMBTL had been scrapped and just given us all new songs. It’s not like they don’t have plenty. They could even pull from the vault and modernize the production on some and have Celine re-record them. But the new songs we got I thought were strong.

Courage is in my opinion, her best English work since LTAL.

I think Taking Chances may be her best album of the new millennium. It transports me to classic Celine sounds and vocals, but still offers something new. Ballads, pop, but also that rock-ish element that she is SO good at.

I agree 100%! She doesn’t record enough decent songs anymore. I don’t even have HDAMLF on any playlist, because I couldn’t care less about that song. Most songs on Courage are very forgettable, apart from very few exceptions. The songs no longer have a real solid bridge and climax like her 90s ballads (the one in e.g. Tell Him is breath taking!) Her 90s songs are almost a spiritual experience!

The problem of songs not having a real solid bridge and climax counts for 99% of all the songs that are released nowadays! Unfortunately it's not in fashion anymore. And songs aren't longer than 3 minutes, cos people's concentration span isn't long enough anymore. It is real sad, but generally speaking, I don't think we will ever get the quality of pre 2010.
