POPULAR
I'm kind of a lapsed Celine fan - listened to her rather obsessively in late '90s but since then I've largely tuned out, outside of maybe the French albums. And then I recently stumbled across a Youtube version of Mr Paganini, and....WOW!
Reading about that session in 2012 with Herbie Hancock, Christian McBride and Terri Lyne Carrington gives me a lot of hope! I mean, Herbie is clearly a legend, but so is Christian McBride, and Terri Lyne is no slouch either. I'm a huge jazz fan and have seen all three of them play live in various incarnations and they're the creme-de-la-creme of jazz musicians. Would lend Celine some instant street cred in the jazz world, and perhaps finally win her some respect from the critics (because let's face it, she deserves it!)
These recent reports that Celine was supposedly recording at Berklee in Boston last week have me all giddy! I mean, it's arguably the world's top jazz school and Terri Lyne is a professor there, so...maybe this is really happening?!
And lastly, I think Diana Krall should produce this. Love her as a jazz pianist and singer, but she's also proven to be a serious producer (Barbara Streisand's Love is the Answer) and musical director/ arranger (Paul McCartney's standards record, Kisses on the Bottom). That, plus she's the queen of nuance and restraint, which I think is exactly what Celine needs on an album like this. Oh, and Diana's own latest record was produced by David Foster, so here's hoping he can facilitate an intro ;-) ! (Although I think Diana has already appeared on a Celine album as a session musician, playing piano on Blue Christmas on These Are Special Times!) Plus, a fellow Canadian and mom of twin boys!
Seriously, Celine needs to do this! She has all the ingredients to make a killer jazz album. And if this were to happen it would definitely bring me back into the Celine fold, and I think would win her a lot of new fans and respect. Maybe she can do a top secret appearance at the Montreal Jazz Fest like Gaga did last year...
Oh, and I'd love another French record; would love to hear her sing more Brel, Piaf... you know, the classic chansons. And I hope they release and market the English and French records simultaneously. Maybe that way more people will get introduced to Celine's French catalogue, which I always felt was sooo much better than her English stuff.
Anyway, just my 2 cents!

Another thing is, I've ALWAYS heard and hoped that she would record "Help" by Aretha Franklin.
And maybe she will. I wanted her to record "Alone" by HEART for a long time. And she DID!!!!

I'm not sure they even sang a duet on a TV show...
She talked about him in her biography, means they know each other.

I know he is kind of retired or so, but could he not do just one song with Celine ?

The only thing I know they did together is take a picture.

There is a picture of them together, and I think a comment on this picture.
Sorry I don't have the book on hand here...

I think Phil Collins was also a guest on the Tonight Show on Celine's very first appearance on American TV. I seem to recall reading something like: Phil said, "See you soon," and Celine said, "Absolutely!" I don't remember exactly, though. . .

I hope they don't go for another pop album that they are hoping she'd have hit singles, etc. Now is the time for her to build on her recording legacy and remind the world the vocal power & finesse she has. She needs to do a concept album like standards/classic or (as I've said many times) a jazz album. She seems really comfortable with the genre and she could get the best musicians, writers, & producers in the jazz world and the album would be amazing and would blow the world away!!

Couldn't agree more. There are so many great songs she can really do beautifully.
Look at Nature Boy (which I personally think is stunning), Summertime, Bewitched, Bothered & Bewildered, The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face... all absolutely amazing interpretations.
The last English album seemed like such a waste to me, trying to forcibly get Celine to appeal to the wrong demographic. She doesn't need to prove herself and try to compete with the current crop of chart toppers. It comes off as forced and frankly, kinda desperate. There's no need for that stuff.

Amen to that, women over 40 aren't played on the radio. It's a sad reality but it's true. Celine's no exception and it looks like Sony does not want to realize that.

I don't think they forced her to appeal to the younger demographic. If that was the case they would have sent LMBTL to top 40 and pushed harder for air play. I also don't think they would have included the covers if they were going for and image reboot. Celine, I'm pretty sure has a heavy hand on what songs she records. She sings what she feels like singing, and I thought LMBTL was a great album. The new songs had a nice modern sound without straying too far away from Celine's signature.

And I thought .. Celine could do this easily as well.. but then again. Why should she? I rather have a classic Celine album like A new day has come, filled with some uptempo songs, popsongs, big ballads...
