Rolling Stone Magazine has little credibility among music fans or even critics. This best vocalist list is another pathetic attempt by a publication that has seen better days to increase readership by being provocative. The fact that RS editors and writers have trashed Celine over the years means nothing. Rob Sheffield's review of Taking Chances, for example, is not witty or smart; it's juvenille. Remember, the targeted demographic for this magazine is male adolescent, non-gay. At this point, it's hard to imagine any intelligent person not cringing at the thought of it. Rolling Stone's cynical and idiotic attemps to stay "cool" just seem desperate. I don't think Celine has anything to worry about.

oh please!!! that review of Taking Chances doesn't have a place in this forum.

that's one of the most ridiculous reviews i've ever heard in my entire life! if they don't like Celine, fine, but as a "music professionals" (as they claimed they are LOOOOOOOOOOL!!!), they should never discredit Celine's impact in music as a WHOLE. she sold 200M albums, has 6 albums in the "All Time" list, and obviously, (even the Celine-haters will agree) recorded at least 5 of the dopest songs and performed some of the greatest vocal pyrotechniques (All By Myself, IACBTMN, O Holy Night to name afew)  ever caught on record. we rarely see a bad vocal performance from her, and still they got the nerve to overlook her? how pathetic is that.

no matter how pissed we get, Rolling Stone's reviews and rankings are important. they've been around for like forever, but it's sad how they treat someone as big as Celine Dion. i could go on with my sentiments, but what can i do? i'm just one of the millions of fans who are hoping to be heard LOL! (drama! :lmao:)

Yeah... I just don't see how not being included in some arbitrary, meaningless list, in a magazine that has always had it in for Celine (regardless of who compiled the list) equals a "monstrous failure".

I WISH I had her "monstrous failure" - a 25+ year career in music, millions of adoring fans, millions and millions of dollars, and a loving family... yep, she's a big failure. I bet she's crying her eyes out over not being on that list as we speak.

I read this forum quite a bit, but I rarely post, and threads like this are why.

I don't think we have to love every single aspect of Celine's career, and yes it's frustrating that her record label seem to make one poor choice after another regarding her promotion, but come on... "monstrous failure is her own fault"? That just seems like an unhealthy level of negativity directed at a pop singer!
Not to mention, it's a gross exaggeration.

That is absolutely not true and Celine makes number ONE on my list...They obviously are deaf.  They have not taste in music and I even doubt that they know what music is or even what it means.  It has Celine's name as the definition in the dictionary!

Rolling Stone Taking Chances review: 1 star out of 5

Celine Dion calling her new album Taking Chances? That's like a Zac Efron musical called Making Cops s*** Their Pants, or a Lil Wayne mix tape titled Bumming Bus Fare From My Mom. Celine's shtick is as safe a bet as there is in the music biz, coming a mere six months after her last album, the Canadian chart-topper D'Elles. Alas, her cat-strangling whine is still a remarkably ugly sound, no matter what she's singing. The days are gone when she had her pick of material, ruining perfectly nice pop-trash ballads from Diane Warren or Jim Steinman — no songs here by either of them, and Linda Perry's "New Dawn" is a Nineties leftover. She interprets Ne-Yo ("I Got Nothin' Left") and the Dream ("Skies of L.A.") with awful results. She goes back to Eighties schlockmeister Aldo Nova for "Can't Fight This Feelin'," which is unfortunately not an REO Speedwagon cover. But that's nothing compared to Dion shrieking the ten millionth version of Heart's "Alone" (mad pitchy, dog!), produced by ex-Evanescence guitarist Ben Moody — Amy Lee, meet the fugliest bullet you ever dodged.

Rolling Stone A new Day Has Come review: 2 stars out of 5

No matter how awful the new Celine Dion album sounds, you have to admit: It took real artistic integrity not to do a September 11th song. For that alone, C-Boogie earns both of her stars. The grande dame of global schlock pop, never previously noted for her discretion, has returned after a brief hiatus from the music biz, a vacation we all enjoyed as much as she did. For A New Day Has Come, she assembles a team of songwriters that will astound any connoisseur of Eighties pop trash: Here's Aldo Nova, there's Corey Hart, can't forget Mutt Lange and, holy Christ, it's Charlie Dore, who sang "Pilot of the Airwaves" in 1980! Lange contributes "Goodbye's (The Saddest Word)," sure to inspire many hours of dull debate with Bernie Taupin. Dion's voice is still just furniture polish -- she doesn't have the pipes for material defined by Etta James ("At Last") or Nat "King" Cole ("Nature Boy"). But give her credit for knowing where to draw the line.

Karen Carpenter made it to the list but she's not that far from the bottom.

As for that review by Rob Sheffield (who?????), many people including non-SCFs actually attacked it for being "unprofessional" and "sexist". :P  :P  :P

You're right. Celine doesn't give a flying fig about being the no.1 this or the no.1 that anymore.   She used to, not now. Celine herself says she's had a career beyond all expectation, that she has nothing to prove anymore, and that she just wants to keep her true fans happy. I applaud her for that.   Why should she worry about being on a list? If i had her career i wouldn't be.  :D
How? By lipping her "live" concerts? True fans pay a lot of money to see her and hear her live. By releasing old songs in compilations just to make money out of true fans? Her having nothing to prove = she has so much money that she doesn't care anymore...

Ouch!!! :o Think you may have got me wrong. What i mean is Celine has even admitted in interviews she has nothing to prove anymore to anyone/the music industry, and that she's not that interested in making new fans - she wants to keep her true fans happy. What's wrong with that??? Just by her releasing a compilation album doesn't mean she doesn't care. IT ISN'T THE LAW YOU KNOW, TO BUY HER ALBUMS. YOU HAVE YOUR OWN CHOICE!!

ach, #1 - Celine never really fit into the world of rock'n'roll hipsters (and most of her attempts of going there are rather laughable than loveable) in the 90's you could give her at least credit for the whole power ballad vocal diva thing - nowadays, I don't know what she's doing, it's neither this nor that. I wonder if she knows it herself
#2 - isn't Pitchfork nowadays what Rolling Stone used to be 20 years ago? well, she wouldn't be mentionned in that one either

Well, from the last articles from RS we could assume that their attitude towards Céline radically changed.
So maybe they just cleaned up juvenile articles not worthy the word critics.
Let's see what they will write for the Courage album ^_^

They haven’t reviewed a Celine album since Taking Chances, hope them to finally give acclaim to a Celine album....depends on the writer.. They used to pick haters to review Celine, but when it comes to Mariah, all the editors they pick are her stans (same happens on pitchfork)

Well, though I think everyone can notice at this stage that Céline has a big lack of interest in her own career and she rarely talks about her music, business etc (some talking about her songs and technical aspects of her albums would be nice from time to time  ), the question is:

WHO CARES? :thumbsup2:

I'm starting to assume that Céline has taken that path of not focusing nor talking about her music anymore, and I think we will have to deal with that better sooner than later -_-

it's disgusting to include aguilera yet not celine

then again they excluded barbra.

then again it's rolling stone

then again it's just a list

then again these lists can never please everyone

BUT GAH!!!! still upset :(

edit: actually aretha usually almost always ends up on the top of these lists. at least for the women

I predict it will take another 10-20 years before the hipsters grow some tiny amount of respect for celine due to her being some oldie artist then and it'll be a novelty to like the cheeze when it's so old :S

Wow you are right 😀

It was marketable, trendy, and totally "In" to clash Céline between 1995 to 2010.

She was probably too much sometimes, indeed, but overall she was and still, I think, geniune.

Rob Sheffield and Rolling Stone maybe  honestly think what they wrote about her, that's their right...However, they pushed the button way and way further because it was "selling"...

You notice that InStyle Magazine is prasing Céline these days...As I said in a previous post I do clearly remember in the mid-90's reading an article of In Style stating how unsightly Céline is qualifing her for the least attractive woman ever...yes Céline is defo. not a beauty pageant, but still it was "in" mocking her to the limits

In the 90's, Céline sold around 140 million albums or something, the best selling artist of that decade...Hundreds Sold-out shows in Arenas and stadiums...The most appreciated singer according to many polls in the USA...Still, when it came to be publicly, it was kinda "A big shame" stating that someone's buying or listening to her music (Especially for men I guess)...So all those millions and millions of people around had to hide?

I just really admire how strong Céline and René were (And still are)...Never look around...Straight forward...Stay focused... Critics are terrible, fine, that's democracy and Thanks God for the freedom of speech and the freedom of Press...They were always looking to reach their goal, keep on working harder and harder...Some stated (Michel Drucker for instance) that they've never seen any other artist working as harder as Céline...And yes she did...

That's a true lesson of life from her, her talent is indeniable (Some say she sings the better in the world!!!), wether people like her songs or voice that's based on each one's rights, today she gets some credits, because she's never tried to be someone that she isn't...Truly geniune ...The Greatest singer...A Monster on stage!!!

Don't be believed on what you read on RS. It's just an opinion from them. We all know how good Celine is. RS is just a crap magazine and want to use Celine on their publications just to get more attention.
