After her participation in the official reception with the profit of the Foundation Nelson Mandela Thursday in Johannesburg, Céline Dion created truly her new spectacle Taking Chances, yesterday evening in Pretoria. Or rather, it tried to overcome this spectacle that the director Jamie King conceived according to a central scene, more sophisticated much, with screens which move and especially of the elevators which facilitate the changes of costumes, and which will not be used before the Japanese spectacles in March. By then, it will be necessary for them to adapt quickly to a traditional scene this spectacle of XXIe century.
It was thus an evening of first with its batch of foreseeable pips, multiplied by ten by the complexity of the machine and a major failure, but which did not decrease of anything the tangible pleasure which felt these some 40 000 South-African spectators, very mainly white, to see for the first time the star Québécois in flesh and bone. Total spectacle The spectacle which Céline Dion gave the last time that it left in round 10 years ago was only one simple song recital when one compares it with the adventure of 2008. From now on, it is necessary to speak about a total spectacle which will leave with the public no moment respite when the sequences are at the point. During the changes of costumes, the spectacle continues of more beautiful. The dancers invade the scene and one attends modern variety shows, left crossing between the spectacle pop-rock'n'roll and renovated Broadway, which also use the three giant screens. Upon the departure, a video clip ultraléché on a remix dance of I Drove All Night had filled its mandate perfectly: to more put in appetite a public which claimed Céline Dion ten minutes before the beginning of the spectacle. Then the singer appeared, well in flesh in her short black dress, and borrowed from Kiki Dee her old success I Got the Music In Me. Lessons to be learnt Successes (The Power of Love, It' S All Coming Back To Me Now, Because You Loved Me, To Love You More) were accomodated by cries of happiness and were sung with heart by spectators like my young neighbor of right-hand side. The new songs however, especially rythmées, seemed to me a stage coach in on this side theirs version on disc.
The guitar especially, but sometimes the keyboards, were too timid in the mix. Perhaps it acts of a simple adjustment and that one will benefit from it from the blow to persuade this low which hummed on Taking Chances and the ballade I' m Your Angel. Pour Que Tu M'aimes Encore, who played here as well the English radio as with African, proves once again that a good song transcends the barrier of the languages. To make sing in Céline It' S has Man' S Man' S Man' S World of James Brown is a brilliant flash. Because, in the mouth of a woman, this traditional of Godfather of Soul takes another significance, but especially because it gives to the singer a space freedom which enables him to have fun, to improvise. One cannot say as much the homage to the Queen group of it. One recognizes the beat of We Will Rock You, everyone types hands, but something bell, it misses... a voice, that of Celine.
The dancers become animated and, in despair of cause, the chorus-singer Barnev Valsaint tries to take the changing. Waste of time and effort, the federator anthem of Queen runs without nobody being in measurement of the rescaper. When Céline reappears finally in her new costume, it is to sing The Show Must Go One, also of Queen, which never was so by the way. Celine raises the arm at the same time as Freddie Mercury to the screen behind, and the guitar takes its place. The disaster was avoided. Not, it was not an evening of any rest. Celine constantly did a hand in the back to try to adjust her ear-phones. Obviously, it was not always intended to sing and that aggravated it, but it was necessary some more than that so that she distorts. One was in a hurry to hear That' S Just the Woman in Me, his torrid blues in Janis Joplin, and one was not disappointed even if Celine and her musicians did not leave the same foot. Juicy guitar and organ and a singer who plunges and pushes her voice in extreme cases, here is the proof that music and voices with full volume can stimulate one the other, to even nourish itself. The team of Celine Dion will surely draw from the advantageous lessons of this evening of first. We will check on the spot as of this evening.

It doesn't refer to those technical glitches only, tho. The author of the review of the preview of the review claims that the new songs from Taking Chances sound very dry live and they lack the edgyness they have on the album. He excplicitely complained about the low level of piano, bass and guitars. He seems to like the choice of the songs for the concert and kind of regrets Céline doesn't sing the interludes and the break-up songs like Respect, We Will Rock You etc.

I like the fact that "Shadow Of Love" and "Fade Away" are part of the setlist. However, I think there are way too many covers. Why can't she perform some of her hits such as "That's The Way It Is" or more new material from the album such as "Can't Fight The Feelin'," "Surprise Surprise," or the song that her and Rene have claimed to be the diamond in the rough - "A Song For You"?
:sigh: Hopefully the setlist gets tweaked and changed before she comes to the States.
