The Newspaper of Montreal

The voice of Celine Dion resounded yesterday in the immense Loftus stage of Pretoria, under a starry sky, having nearly 40 000 people.
It was not only The Power of coils, yesterday evening in Loftus Stadium of Pretoria, like one of the titles of the singer, but "the power of Céline". The star spread himself in all his splendour. It offered a dynamic spectacle hyper of high gauge. No the doubt, it counts among largest.
Its band of musicians, Claude Mégo Lemay (leader), Andre Coutu (guitar), Yves Frula (keyboard), Domenica Messier (battery), Marc Langis (low), Jean-Sebastien Bus D (violin) and Nanette Fortier (percussion), and its dancers, very solicited throughout the performance and in per pétuelle interaction with the singer, make of this show of dynamite. That moves, that leaves in all the directions. Projections with the thousand hot colors diffused on three immense screens add some.
And Celine in all that carries out the boat joyeusement. She was yesterday very in voice. This voice is indeed inimitable.
Adjustment of sound
Celine has, yesterday evening, at the time of truth great evening of first of her round Taking Chances (it had sung with the official reception-benefit of Nelson Mandela two days ago), seemed to know small problems with her monitors.
She adjusted discreetly the sound, the apparatus hung behind her back. One has to expect small pips of the kind one evening of great first.
If it had evil to get along, none the spectators saw the difference in the stage. Its voice returned like a ton of bricks. The sound was excellent besides, even in this gigantic enclosure with open sky. The emotion was with go and the shivers passed too.
Ten times better
In the stage of Pretoria, hundreds of fluorescent tubes shone in the black, the South African expressing their affection for the star. They waited this moment for a very long time.
"That made ten years that I want to see it. That made four months that our tickets were bought, bougonné an injury which had piqué of the reserved seats with somebody of other. I do not move from here!"
The public of Celine in South Africa resembles that of Quebec, of people of all ages, as a large majority of white race.
The South-Africans are however a little preserving. They shouted of "One loves you Céline" and applauded very extremely, also took part when one asked them to rise. But I would have liked more heat.
They however adored. At their exit of the stage, they all seemed charmed: "It was splendid", entrusted one of them.
"It was ten times better than I had considered it", said another.
Four tables
The spectacle of Celine is a whole of several tables which involve us from one environment to another. The singer passes from the rock'n'roll to the ballades with fluidity, it interprets even soul and pays a fabulous homage to the Queen group.
With Taking Chances, there is for all the tastes. One passes from a section of rock'n'roll removing to a block of inspiration flamenco to return to a very modern mood.
The singer interprets six of the new songs drawn from her album Taking Chances, of the name of her round, including the song titrates Eye one me with Arab savour, the Alone ballade of the Heart formation, Shadow of coils and insipid Just away. Towards the end, it holds its more heavy mé- lodie rock'n'roll drawn from its new album, That' S just the wo- man in me. Celine does not neglect either her traditional, the large hits as The Power of coils, It' S all coming back to me, Because you loved me and the only French song who will make the full rotation of the world, So that you like me in core, song of Jean-Jacques Goldman. The latter besides seems to charm the South-African public, which by the step a French word but rather English.
The singer interprets also All by myself, which makes it possible to offer to the public all the power of its voice, and To rivet deep mountain high, song of Tina Turner, right before finishing her spectacle with My heart will go one.
À.fond the case
The opening of Taking Chances is made à.fond the case. One initially sees in projection on three gigantic screens the stiletto heels of the singer, then his long legs which move towards a sports car, then wind mills which turn in what resembles the desert of Nevada.
Other images of all kinds ravel. One sees of speed a few moments important in the career of the singer, left retrospectives in photographs. Even the very young Celine is seen whereas it began her career.
Always on giant screens, the singer puts herself at the wheel of a small sports car and it rolls on a road without end, the hair with the wind, more beautiful than ever. In basic music, one hears I drove all night, then here it is which arrives in flesh and bone on the scene top of the some steps, vêtue of a black and silver plated minidress.
"You are ready Pretoria?" question it. And the room to shout in a dash of pleasure: "Yes!" "Let' S C it!"(Let us go there!) add Céline.
Lastly, its fans
Then, it starts I got the music in me, going of length into broad on the broad frontal scene. The loudspeakers vibrate and our stomachs too. Celine sings with her chorus-singer Barnev Valsaint, it joint with her guitarist Jean-Sebastien Carré. She finishes by stretching the note on The driven... sic in me. And it left. One knows already which wood it is heated.
The singer connects immediately with Power of coils one of her impossible to circumvent ballades. Then, it is addressed to the public. She points out the emotional experiment which she is living in South Africa, in company of her mother, her son and her husband. She points out the great privilege which she had to make the meeting of Nelson Mandela.
"That made soon ten years that I did not make of round, adds it, we want to make the things well while beginning here in South Africa."
Then, the singer thanks her fans in the two principal languages for the country, Danke in African and Siyabonga in Zulu, before interpreting its new success, the song titrates of Taking chances.
The ice is broken. The face of Celine is illuminated, it joint a few moments with its leader, Claude Mégo Lemay, who makes vibrate his guitar. Lastly, the singer found her truths fans.
Gypsy
During a musical part with savour flamenco ravel on the giant screens the pages of a book. Dancers enter bearing on their shoulders their partners of dance.
They take the Spanish form, they are carried out suavement. They continue to dance. The intro is stretched. Celine lets herself wish. Then, it appears in all its splendour, in top of a staircase, in the center of the light. It is vêtue of a white shirt and red trousers moulding. On its kidneys a long drag is posed which it sometimes balances of the hand as the dress of a dancer gypsy.
The singer threads three old successes, It' S all coming back to me, Because you loved me and To coils you more which suddenly take colors of Andalusia, heats and sensual. On the giant screens, inscriptions seem the words of love letters. Jean-Sebastien Carré accompanies it with the violin. Red images of clouds ravel, an elegant dancer is brought close to Celine, it removes her drag to him and transforms it into cape of toreador, then it is stuck to it and passes very close to its nape of the neck of its breath.
Lastly, the singer interprets one of her innovations, Eyes one me, which has pronounced Arab accents, even of music of the world, and it finishes this block with All by myself. This large ballade is undoubtedly one of most demanding, than it controls for a long time with the perfection.
More beautiful than ever
At the dawn of her 40 years (on next 30 March), Céline is in great form. The images that it offers to us in projection at the time of the third block of its spectacle us show it in full session of photographs of mode. More beautiful and fashion that never.
After this intro mode, the singer returns on scene vêtue of a dress which shines of thousand fires. Then, all the arsenal is deployed. Its eight excellent dancers accompany it, of the silhouettes of African style jump on the giant screens. Celine sings I' m alive and its scene is indeed very alive. She connects with two of her new songs up tempo, Shadow of coils and Just Fade away.
Celine gives all the members of sound band much of visibility. She interacts with them, including her chorus-singers: Barnev Valsaint, Élyse Duguay and Marie-Lou Gauthier.
Celine interprets then her version of the melody of the formation Heart, Alone, behind it, of the sheets and from the crystals fall on the large screens. Then it presents So that you still like me with the public and thanks them in French when, the end, they applaud it cordially.
The singer finishes this last but one block by her song Think Twice, which was a very large success in England and in all the anglophone countries, including South Africa.
Homage To Queen
The last table of the spectacle of Celine is by far more surprising. The singer, whom one knew more pop adult, pours more in the soul and the rock'n'roll, where its roots are.
Whereas the spectacle draws at its end, the singer pays a beautiful homage to the Queen formation with We will rock'n'roll you and Show must go one, very equipped with black.
Behind it ravel full with images of the members of the formation, including Freddie Mercury, died of the AIDS at the 45 years age. In South Africa, where the AIDS affects, according to statistical data's, a great part of the population, this homage becomes symbolic system.
Finally the soul part of the spectacle begins. The dancers all, vêtus of white clothes, are carried out on a medley motown which includes/understands in particular Lady Marmalade and Soul man, returned by the voice of Barnev Valsaint.
Celine makes an entry crashing to pieces vêtue of a short white dress, a black rower on the corner of the head. She sings as one seldom intended to sing one of successes of James Brown, It' S has mans mans mans world.
Celine is done provocative then in her interpretation of That' S just the woman in me and outlines some steps of dance with her female colleagues. She connects with Love edge move mountain and River deep mountain high, whereas on the giant screens, with the forms geometrical, round and square, red, white and black, swarms.
The singer benefits from this dazzling to withdraw themselves and return last once on scene, wearing a splendid evening gown of yellow color in order to sing her traditional My Heart will go one, Titanic film.
Lightings are then splendid.
Celine remained on scene yesterday nearly two hours thirty. The show began a few minutes before 9 p.m..
