Hey guys,

I was talking to my friend, Amiée, tonight online and she asked me how many octaves Celine can sing.  To be honest I couldn't remember.  I think she has a 5-octave range, but I may be mistaken.  Can anybody answer this for me?

Thanks!

...Joe...

5.555

The .555 if she does her chipmunk notes!

Mariah Scarey is able to do two octaves higher because she has dolphin genes. She likes to do soundcheck underwater.

im sorry for mariah carey fans.. but i do believe mariah's voice is gone. i watched her perform here last 2003 and her voice really sounds terrible LIVE. she's a studio singers and i always wonder what studio magic they are using because her songs are so super human. listen to mine again or never too far. but i believe she cant sing them live. i dont hate mariah but i think celine  dion is far superior than her. celine managed to keep her voice clear for a long time. but whitney houston's and mariah's voice had deteriorated big time! whitney has a good excuse because of drugs. but mariah???why??? her fans always makes an excuses like she is not feeling well in a live performance, or her voice is not in good shape.. but hey!!! all, as in ALL her live performances, her voice is horible. watch the around the world dvd, and decide...

among her contempoaries, celine is one of only few artists that managed to keep their voices pure and sounds the same through a decade of their carreers.

I've read once she can sing 5 octaves.

@ Love, : Is it possible that you mean that Céline can sing until that note? (I mean you don't start at octave 1, so the low c) Because I guess nobody can sing 7 octaves. And I think we mustn't mention the whistle register there.

Well, what I wanted to say is : I have no clue

Five octaves sounds quite exaggerated.

We know that David Foster said that the D in All By Myself was near the limit of her range. She had to sing it in full voice and sustain the note for a couple of measures.

I am sure she can probably hit all the notes in close to two octaves. Remember an octave is a span of eight notes.

My best guess is she can most likely hit the C below middle C and move all the up to an F or G7 while maintaining a strong voice. So almost two octaves in full voice.

She can go above a high G, but that is hard for her...more head voice...and I'm sure can do the whole whistle register thing...like in the "dueling" with band members in Live In Paris.

After all, she has had operatic voice training and also had the privilege of working with the best vocal trainers and doctors in the world!

I would love for someone with musical training to dispel the whole 5 and 8 octave chicanery.

A piano has 8 octaves right?

No way does she have 5.  The most educated opinions I've heard all say about 3 at the most;

Yep.

Three is a smart guess.

But simply knowing for octave range is nothing compared to knowing her tessitura.

Tessitura—the overall range a singer is comfortable singing in. In order to have notes a part of your range you have to be able to sustain them with ease

I read on one website that Celine is a lyric mezzo soprano...or a middle voice soprano. That's probably correct.

They said Whitney Houston was a dramatic mezzo soprano. Also accurate and Mariah was a Dramatic Coloratura. *snorts* (Is it just me or does that sound like the name of some fantastical bird?)

Anyway...this topic is interesting. I have been pondering Celine's vocal abilities for a while now.

I seem to recall a video clip of her doing her vocal warmups around the time of Let's Talk About Love where she is in the studio.

I would love to see those clips again.

3 Octave is already a whole world, some people think it's not, but it's is.

From a low note of Louis Armstrong to that high note of the phantom of the opera you have this distance of 3 octaves.

I already heard people saying that someone sings 7 octaves, but it's just not possible, 7 octaves is the whole piano, it's just not vocally possible.

So Celine sings something like 3 octaves and half, and this is really huggeeee, even who doesn't know what a octave is can notice she has a big vocal extension just by hearing the low and high notes she reachs!!!

Well, in " New dawn" she sings a C3 (in the intro).  The highest I've heard her go, was in "Le ballett" (the live version from Paris), and there she sings a C6. She hits that C effortlessly, so I think she most definitely can go higher than that, maybe as high as an F6. That would make her octave range about 3 1/2 octaves - which truly is amazing. Mariah has hit a B2 (in Looking in, God rest ye merry gentlemen, You and I), and she sang a G#7 (Emotions live, 1991). That's almost 5 octaves.

if she had 3 with her full chest voice, that would be A LOT, believe me... I don't think she reaches that number of octaves...

probably a little over 2.

chest voice is not to be maintained in the higher ranges. it is not to be a singer's goal to sing the high notes with chest voice. Although Christina Aguilera does it, doesn't mean it's good. it majorly strikes the vocal chords because you sing with too much pressure on your voice to belt the notes. There are certain registers to sing the lower,  middle and higher notes. Whistle is just for the really high notes and I am not sure if that should be included in a regular range.
Celine has a 3 octave range voice with occasional outbreaks into the one or other direction. it really depends on your daily state, also for Celine. One a good day she might get one or two notes higher than on a bad day. You really can't pin it down to a single note and say: ok, this is where it stops.

ok i agree with you. But you know, head voice is very flexible.. even I (male) can go as high as celine in falsetto.. which is why I think it's not a good way of measuring vocal range. However, chest voice is for sure the "real" one, and the most impressive also.

I was wondering then, what is celine's and mariah's range in CHEST voice?

I remember there were some really high notes on that song celine recorded for that spanish band.. (cafe quijano was it?)

also the note on That's just the woman in me is higher than that on all by myself...

the song "Nadie Lo Entiende" was recorded in 2003.
Celine Dion appears as a vocalist on Café Quijano´s album "Que Grande Es Esto Del Amor", released on November 4, 2003. It contains 11 new songs. It is the group´s 4th album. :)

no baby... celine never lost her voice ever. listen to unison and taking chances. she still sounds the same and more mature in a good way.      im tired of mariah's fans' excuses that maybe mariah is not feeling well in a particular performance, but hey! all! as in ALL of her live performances, she struggles a lot. i wanna know what kind of magic her producers are using to hide the flaws in her voice. :sofunny:  :sofunny:
i dont hate mariah. i actually have her albums, but saying mariah is better than celine is pathetic.. let's put celine and mariah in one stage. goodluck mariah... :sofunny:  :sofunny:  :sofunny:
