Céline in Russia and Africa?

Does someone have information (sales, figures,... ) about the success of Céline in these markets?

Ok, here we go, I'm gonna tell you about how popular Celine is in Russia or, to be exactly, in Belarus where I do live myself.

 

I don't even know where do I begin. Perhaps, the first thing to notice is that when you ask for any of Celine's cds in cd-stores shopkeepers look at you a kind of shocked and tell either "who is Celine... how did you say it?" or "eeee... has she ever recorded anything else besides the Titanic song?"... Sure thing it's impossible to get Celine's new cd On Ne Change Pas here. ANDLILV is still nowhere to be found... Furthermore, you can't hear her songs on the radio. She's a little bit more successfull in Russia maybe but there's at least one thing I'm sure about. If she goes with a concert to Belarus or Russia not many peolple would go and see her. I would and one friend of mine would and maybe my mom would coz she respect her talent but... It would be a kind of private concert - 3 people in the audience and Celine Dion!

 

So how do you like it, isurrender? But it's true, take my word! There are really some countries in the world besides some low-developed African countries where people don't know who Celine Dion is. All the more, people look at you like you're totally nuts when they here Celine from your earphones or when you ask her cds in shops... By the way, there's one more example I can give you. Once I was asked by my schoolmate "who Whitney Houston is?"... I mean it! And then I was asked who Sting was... And then when I asked for Toni Braxton's new cd Libra the shopkeeper asked "Toni what? Toni Blackstone? Who is this?"...

 

So... Living here is... Is a crap, to be honest.

oh MY GOD!!! Nobody knows .. nobody!

 

But I know that Céline is very popular... in Africa! Of course, not in the poor countries but in South Africa, Tunisia and so on.. she is very successfull.. Once I had the certifications of Céline's albums in South Africa... but I lost them. Morevover, many people who went to Africa said she is played a lot on radios!

 

Indeed I asked that because before there was a sony website for Russia! With the charts of the albums from SonyMusic and Céline was among the best seller of the company in Russia but this website doesn't exist anymore!

I don't think Celine is so unpopular in Russia. we have many Russian fans here. and I know many other French singers are very popular in Russia, like Mylene Farmer, Lara Fabian... they had very successful concerts there. maybe she's unpopular in where you live only.

I remember being told that when Lara gave her concert in Moskow a few years ago it was not a success... Third part of the concert hall was full only, as far as I remember. But what about Mylene... I don't know wether it was successful or not. But the fact is that Mylene is really popular here. Even in Belarus some peoplke know who Mylene Farmer is. Well, it's only due to *CENSORED* Them All ( ) song.

 

But I know that Céline is very popular... in Africa!

 

Yeap, certainly! There's even a short video message of Celine to her fans in South Africa. Celine told smth like "enjoy my new music video". I Drove All Night was what she meant. So yeah, she's popular in South Africa but surely not in Belarus. Russia... It's easier to find her fans there, there's even an internet forum dedicated to Celine but here in Belarus... One more thing you can hear from people if they know who Celine Dion is "oh, my God, she's the ugliest woman I've ever seen, she's just so horrible". Or maybe "are there are still some freaks who like Celine Dion?". That is what I hear when sb finds out I like Celine. That's why I don't tell I like her. Don't tell i love her.

That's it, nobody. I was really astonished by finding another fan of Celine here. Anyway... How did our girl sang in Tous les blues sont ecrits pour toi? "Nobody know, nobody cares!!!"...

No, I mean that people here either hate Celine Dion (the way she looks, the way she dresses herself, the way she sings... the way she moves... ) or they just don't know her at all. And that's it!

I know for sure that she is the most-known singer in the globe!!!!!!now about russia and africa maybe it is just parts of the countries that know her!!!!!But i also think that a few years ago Celine wanted to have concerts in south africa as well....I don't know what else to say......

i am from egypt and i can tell you that celine is not very popular these days,but everybody know her,but it is getting very hard to get her cds specialy the french cds.but from 96's to 2002 celine was very popular and her cds were everywhere.

celine needs to do much more pormotion specialy in europe because if she will stay in vegas for the next 4 years,she will lose her fan base in many countries.

talk about finding Celine's cds here in Malaysia... we have to wait for everthing...cuz Malaysia is so damn tiny...some of my friends dont even know who Celine is...all they know is "the singer who sang Titanic" they dont even know the proper title (MHWGO) i hope Celine can make a BIG comeback!

It's not truth! I mean stop mixing Belarus and Russia.

Though Russia is a big country and unfortunately most part of it prefers to download music or to buy not-legal CD. I must say that here in central part of Russia, in Moscow especially, really lot of people know about Celine. Her music is on the radio - she's not mainstream but her new singles always goes in the music-news in media resourses. Sellers in shops knows her and can show her CD right away.

And by the way not only young persons know her name. I was surprised when I met 6 people in a day who after hearing from me the name Celine continued me by saying:"Oh! Dion! It's Celine Dion! Of course we know her...she has such a great love story with her husband". I was pleased

And for better of for worse there're people who doesn't like her and her music but it still makes her known among people.

 

Lara Fabian's concert. I've presented on both of them. In this year also. I can say that she did filled out one of the biggest music hall in Moscow this summer. And the concert was VERY succesful and all the crowd yelled BRAVO after every song and all the stage was full of flowers! That was fantastic! We were hoping before that she'd come to Moscow again, now after that concert we know for sure she will! It was succes!

 

I think, Boy, shouldn't make such a hysteria about it because there're lot of other great singers and great music styles that is LESS popular than Celine. And it still great music and still have their fans.

 

Site Sony music. Well after the merging with BMG it stoped to works, as I know.

It's difficult to judge sale-rating in Russia because of the reason I meantioned above - not-legal CD copies.

By the way I know that in 1997 ther was a progect to invite Celine to russia. Unfortunately we know the result..

 

And of course I'm glad you mentioned russian forum about Celine. Just because we're proud of it. Because it's our forum. And because I'm its admin

And by the way: hiding your love for Celine, her talent and music ,won't help to make her popularity bigger and won't help to prevent people laugh when they hear her name or to ask who she is. You have to stand for it! And to change situation. It doesn't change by itself.

Do something! And people will come.
