Friends made dream come true

A young woman who realized her dream to meet Celine Dion amid a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer has died.

Cathy Doucette, 31, died Friday in Sudbury. A funeral mass was held yesterday at the Notre-Dame du Rosaire Church in Blezard Valley. She is survived by her husband, Steve.

Doucette’s relatives began fundraising among area businesses last spring to send the couple to Dion’s stage show in Las Vegas. The woman had been a fan of the former Quebec singer since childhood.

“She sings so well. I’ve seen a few things on TV about her concert in Las Vegas, and it was like ‘wow, I’ve got to see that,” Doucette told Northern Life before her trip.

“But then you get sick, and you start realizing you have to take it day by day. I never thought I’d be able to go. I always thought maybe one day.”

Sudbury Wolves coach and general manager Mike Foligno heard about Doucette’s trip to Las Vegas. He pulled in a few favours to arrange a meeting with the superstar.

The couple were able to chat with the performer for several minutes before the show.

Meeting Dion and seeing her perform was “the best thing” she’d ever experienced besides her wedding, Doucette said.

“It was great. She’s a really humble person. It’s like you’re talking to an old friend with her. She makes you feel at ease,” she said.

Doucette’s family is requesting donations to the Sudbury Regional Hospital’s Palliative Care ward on the fourth floor of the Laurentian site.
